It has been conjectured by Host-Madsen and Nosratinia that the K-user single-input single-output (SISO) complex Gaussian interference channels with constant channel coefficients have merely one degree of freedom (DoF) regardless of the number of users, i.e., K. Then, Cadambe and Jafar introduced the idea of interference alignment (IA) being able to achieve K/2 DoF in time-varying SISO interference channels. Moreover, their joint work with Wang settled the Host-Madsen-Nosratinia conjecture in negative by using the idea of asymmetric complex signaling to achieve 1.2 DoF for K-user constant SISO interference channels. In this paper, a linear IA scheme for K-user constant SISO interference channels is proposed which could enable us to achieve K/4 DoF for almost all channel coefficients. This means that whenever K ≥ 5, the proposed scheme could achieve at least 1.25 DoF. The main idea of the proposed method relies on the linear IA using symbol extension by Cadambe-Jafar which is not effective for constant channels. However, we show that along with signal rotation across every two consecutive time slots to artificially build a random time-varying channel out of a constant channel, the proposed method can be directly applied to constant channels to achieve K/4 DoF.

Many of us who wear the label "original institutionalise" like to think of John Kenneth Galbraith (1908-2006) as one of us, one of the enlightened few who see the economy as it really is. There is some basis for this. In the early years of the Association for Evolutionary Economics Galbraith served on the governing board. He received the Association's Veblen-Commons Award. He is twice published on the pages of the Journal of Economic Issues (1977; 1989). Ekelund and Hebert referred to Galbraith as "the institutionalist's popularizer" (1997, 429). Given the breadth of his intellectual scope, it may be too much of a stretch to once-and-forever affix the institutionalist label to Galbraith. Still, there is no denying that his ideas and the ideas we call institutionalist have significant overlap. It is less of a stretch to argue that he was influenced by early institutionalists and to say that he influenced many of us is no stretch at all. As the quote above suggests, perhaps the label is not all that important anyway.

In a study of veterinary online continuing education participants looking at professional identity, investigators observed that participants often referred to vets as infallible experts: 'all knowing and free from mistakes and errors' ( Armitage-Chan and others 2016 ). Despite acknowledging that such an ideal simply wasn't feasible at the coal face of veterinary practice, these vets displayed poor coping skills when it came to managing errors, and were quick to criticise colleagues when exposed to videos depicting lapses in professionalism. The emphasis on evidence-based medicine and technical skills maintains the focus on the 'ideal vet' as 'someone who knows everything and is highly technically competent' ( Armitage-Chan and others 2016 ).

Groups can generate large numbers of ideas as part of a decision-making process. These ideas may become too numerous for the group to process effectively. Ideas may also need to be clarified to facilitate this processing. Convergence patterns of group behavior help to reduce the number of ideas to a manageable set and at the same time clarify these ideas. Research aimed at understanding convergence is in the beginning stages. Researchers are developing methods of quantifying convergence. In this paper, we present a method for quantifying the reduction and clarification that has occurred through convergence using an assessment of pre- and postconvergence artifacts. The method characterizes artifacts obtained in the field when facilitators led groups of managers through convergence activities to solve an actual business problem. The workshops utilized the FastFocus thinkLet, as part of a larger group process. We present the results of this measurement or coding method.

Cloud computing is an emerging technology has grown a lot for virtualization and provides many services over the internet such as software as a service, platform as a service, infrastructure as a service and many more services which reduce the cost expenses and operating expenses. Now by using these services, data can store online in the cloud, then automatically a security concern will arise about data. Many protection techniques have been proposed till now. The best options available is encrypting the data before storing in third party cloud database and again decrypt the data after retrieving from the cloud. We introduce a more economical and robust encryption technique which allows a third-party cloud server to shield user data more expeditiously.

Most models of thought are based on the idea of associative memory: The combination of distinct concepts through their association with each other based on experience. Thus, the pattern of associations in the mind is thought to be a critical factor in determining the ideas - both familiar and unfamiliar - that thought can generate. The Itinerant Dynamics with Emergent Attractors (IDEA) model has been proposed as a computational representation of the process by which ideas might emerge in an associative memory system. However, the effect of how "association" is defined in this context remains an important unexplored issue. In this paper, we consider three different ways of defining associations between concepts based on their joint usage in texts, and show that these lead to very different dynamics in the process of emergent conceptual combinations. We use data from two real-world text corpora to instantiate the model: The collected poems of Dylan Thomas, and the Memoirs of the economist Ludwig von Mises. The two sources differ greatly in the nature of their content as well as the statistics of their word usage, which makes them interesting subjects for comparison.

A tenure-track appointment is a wonderful thing, but it really should come with an instruction manual. This article is a loosely-coupled collection of thoughts and advice on surviving a tenure-track appointment. The focus is on concrete tips and advice for an engineering-school appointment, which was my path, but perhaps some of the ideas are also valid in other environments, such as business schools and mathematics or computer science departments.

Reverberation, which is generally caused by sound reflections from walls, ceilings, and floors, can result in severe performance degradation of acoustic applications. Due to a complicated combination of attenuation and time-delay effects, the reverberation property is difficult to characterize, and it remains a challenging task to effectively retrieve the anechoic speech signals from reverberation ones. In the present study, we proposed a novel integrated deep and ensemble learning algorithm (IDEA) for speech dereverberation. The IDEA consists of offline and online phases. In the offline phase, we train multiple dereverberation models, each aiming to precisely dereverb speech signals in a particular acoustic environment;then a unified fusion function is estimated that aims to integrate the information of multiple dereverberation models. In the online phase, an input utterance is first processed by each of the dereverberation models. The outputs of all models are integrated accordingly to generate the final anechoic signal. We evaluated the IDEA on designed acoustic environments, including both matched and mismatched conditions of the training and testing data. Experimental results confirm that the proposed IDEA outperforms single deep-neural-network-based dereverberation model with the same model architecture and training data.

In this paper we study the effect of external ideas on brainstorming by means of two computational models: a transient emergent attractors model (TEAM) and a probabilistic associative model (PAM). New behavioral experimental results show that hints or others' ideas can either hinder or enhance ideas generated during exposure period, while they consistently enhance the quantity of ideas produced after exposure. The TEAM model consists of a neural network of concept nodes connected by means of category membership and relatedness. Ideas emerge dynamically from the activity of the network by temporarily strengthening the connections between co-active nodes. Local inhibition inactivates current idea nodes and allows another idea to form. Active nodes prime connected inactive nodes depending on the recent activity of the node. The model shows that hindering of the number of ideas during hint presentation depends on the strength of hints and that the speed and duration of priming is essential for the long-term priming effect of hints observed in experiments. For comparison purposes, a PAM model originally proposed by Brown and Paulus (1998) is used to explain the same experimental data.
