The Electron Localisation Function, ELF pictorially visualises chemists' intuitive ideas of single and multiple bonds as well as non-bonding electron pairs in molecules. The power of the representation of chemical bonds via ELF is that on the one hand covalent, polar, and ionic bonds are distinguishable, and that on the other hand ELF can be calculated for molecules and solids. This enables us to transfer the ideas of chemical bonding from molecular to intermetallic compounds. Localised two-electron-two-centre bonds and lone pairs are present in solid-state valence compounds (ZintI phases) as expected by the 8-N rule. In solids, lone pairs are generally more contracted than in molecules due to 'lone-pair repulsion'. In intermetallic compounds localised electrons predominantly occur in the form of lone pairs. Lattice vibrations influence the strength of lone pair interactions and non-bonded interactions lead to an exchange of delocalised and localised electrons. Such a mechanism of local electron pair formation gives rise to ideas of a chemical view of the phenomenon of superconductivity in intermetallic compounds.

Lee Lopez and Thomas Rybeck had been in the recruiting industry for yearsand had noticed a lot of disturbing practices among their colleagues. Too many recruiters were justgetting by with the "throw as much as you can at it and see what sticks" philosophy. Rybeck andLopez knew there was a better way. They founded MSI on a much different philosophy - they believedthe search process should be laid out into a structured plan and implemented consistently in a waythat had been proven successful. The WIMSD4 and CITATION codes are used to calculate neutronic parameters of a TRIGA reactor. The results are compared with experimental values. Five configurations are analysed and the excess reactivity worth, the fuel temperature reactivity coefficient, the control reactivity worth, safety and regulation rod of the TRIGA IPR-R1 reactor are calculated. The importance of oxide films and their perfection in extending the application of aluminum alloys are shown. The composition and structure of oxide films formed by microarc oxidation on aluminum alloys of different alloying systems and production methods are studied. The dependence of the oxide coating properties on the parameters of microarc oxidation are found. The results obtained are discussed in terms of the existing concepts of microarc oxidation.

A survey is presented of recent progress in studying kinetically constrained Ising models using numerical approaches, a Fock-space formulation of the master equation and a mode-coupling approach, respectively. To this end, numerical results of various kinds are discussed, and also in connection with some ideas related to the glass transition. Furthermore, kinetically facilitated Ising models, considered as candidates for describing systems with a pronounced cooperativity, are reformulated in a second-quantized formulation. Using this approach, kinetic constraints can be incorporated into an analytical study. We discuss in great detail a one-dimensional model and mean-field approaches of several kinds;finally, we give some ideas for a mode-coupling approach to the slow dynamics of such kinetically constrained Ising models in higher dimensions.

We demonstrate 100-nm-resolution holographic aerial image monitoring based on lensless Fourier-transform holography at extreme-UV (EUV) wavelengths, using synchrotron-based illumination. This method can be used to monitor the coherent imaging performance of EW lithographic optical systems. The system has been implemented in the EUV phase-shifting point-diffraction interferometer recently developed at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Here we introduce the idea of the holographic aerial image-recording technique and present imaging performance characterization results for a 10 x Schwarzschild objective, a prototype EW lithographic optic. The results are compared with simulations, and good agreement is obtained. Various object patterns, including phase-shift-enhanced patterns, have been studied. Finally, the application of the holographic aerial image-recording technique to EUV multilayer mask-blank defect characterization is discussed. (C) 2001 Optical Society of America.
