The modernist movement in art presents palpable evidence of evolution of ideas and \"outside the box\" thinking. One of these creations is the concept of surrealism. This idea offered a cultural movement that was initiated in the 1920s. It is well known to all of us principally due to the visual art and literature provided by its advocates. Their art forms are characterized by elements of surprise, unexpected juxtaposition, and non-sequiturs. Their art of writing was an expression of a philosophical movement, with the works being an artifact. The leader of the movement was Andre Breton, an individual trained in medicine and psychiatry. Breton had worked in a psychiatric ward and employed the methods of Freud to treat shell-shocked soldiers from World War I. Later in Paris, he allied with a number of artists and philosophers whose ideas gave birth to the surrealist movement. They believed that surrealism should advocate the idea that ordinary and depictive expressions are essential, but the sense of arrangement must be open to the full range of imagination according to Hegelian Dialectic. Freud\'s work with free association, dream analysis, and the unconscious was central for the surrealists in developing methods to liberate the imagination.

Very often people and in particular politicians and leaders in industry blame universities to disregard innovation processes and entrepreneurship. Mostly these critics are based on the (historic) 'linear model" of innovation which starts with an idea and, finally, leading directly to an (industrial) product on the market which will be a guaranty for jobs and competitiveness. In this presentation the importance of so called "unapplied" research or in other words basic research at universities is discussed. However, even everybody recognises the importance of basic research when it comes to funding one tries to shift the responsibility to another entity. The role of the universities in the in innovation processes in particular the contribution to the transformation from information to knowledge as well as the education of critical thinking graduates are emphasized. Furthermore suggestions of ideas to improve the relation between industry and university will be presented. Finally, politics is challenged to improve the understanding for universities which should be considered just as a production line for graduates, PhDs and scientific papers. Universities can and do more than that for our society and industry.

I thank Dr. Cook ( 1) for her comments. As described ( 2), my main concern is with use of risk reclassification calibration statistics to draw conclusions from the risk reclassification tables, not with the tables themselves. The tables can indeed provide valuable insights. The issue is that hypothesis tests using reclassification calibration statistics are testing only 1) if the models fit the data in the classic sense of Hosmer and …

In this work, a new dual-band antenna, operating at two frequency-bands centered at 4.7 GHz and 7.5 GHz, is proposed which its operational frequency band is controlled by using reconfigurable notch filters. The idea is developed here for both case of ideal (MEMS) and non-ideal (Semiconductor diodes) switches. The simulations done by IE3D for each design, are verified with measurements.

X-ray sources are developing rapidly and their coherent output is growing correspondingly. The increased coherent flux from modern X-ray sources is being matched with an associated development in experimental methods. This article reviews the literature describing the ideas that utilize the increased brilliance from modern X-ray sources. It explores how ideas in coherent X-ray science are leading to developments in other areas, and vice versa. The article describes measurements of coherence properties and uses this discussion as a base from which to describe partially coherent diffraction and X-ray phase-contrast imaging, with applications in materials science, engineering and medicine. Coherent diffraction imaging methods are reviewed along with associated experiments in materials science. Proposals for experiments to be performed with the new X-ray free-electron lasers are briefly discussed. The literature on X-ray photon-correlation spectroscopy is described and the features it has in common with other coherent X-ray methods are identified. Many of the ideas used in the coherent X-ray literature have their origins in the optical and electron communities and these connections are explored. A review of the areas in which ideas from coherent X-ray methods are contributing to methods for the neutron, electron and optical communities is presented.

A few years ago I was visiting a physiotherapy student on placement. The student had an idea that they wanted to try out with a patient and ran it past the supervisor. The supervisor asked what evidence there was for the idea, \"none\" replied the student, \"then stick with what we know works\" was the reply from the supervisor. The problem was, what was meant to be working wasn\'t. I work as part of a small group (7 of us) who form the research and innovation team at UK Sport and we are tasked with the challenge of indentifying and implementing new and novel ideas that will have a positive impact on medals for team GB in the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games. We have a relatively small budget, have a small potential cohort of approximately 1500 elite athletes and 44 sports to work with and in 2012 will have to justify why we did what we did and demonstrate how the money we spent (tax payers and lottery money) contributed to Team GB\'s success. On a daily basis we search for new and novel performance based solutions that we hope will give team GB an advantage in 2012 and beyond, and then escort those ideas through the minefield of high performance sport to ultimately make a performance difference. Our work is themed into the following areas:

Objectives To evaluate the relevance of obesity and abdominal obesity in the prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD), diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidaemia and hypertension in primary care patients and to ascertain whether waist circumference (WC) measurement should be included in routine clinical practice in addition to body mass index (BMI). Methods As part of the IDEA study, primary care physicians from Spain recruited patients aged 18-80 years. WC and BMI and the presence of CVD, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidaemia and hypertension were recorded. Finally, 17 980 were analysed. An age-related increase in adiposity was observed. Overall 33% were obese by BMI, and 51% of subjects presented abdominal obesity by the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATPIII) (WC > 102 cm for men and > 88 cm for women). Although there was a correlation between BMI and WC, they presented different distribution patterns. Women, but not men, with a high level of education, professional activity and smoking were associated with a lower WC. Abdominal obesity was significantly associated with CVD. Some subjects with abdominal obesity but lean by BMI, showed an increased prevalence of CVD and diabetes. Furthermore, abdominal obesity was strongly associated with dyslipidaemia and hypertension. Conclusions Half of the primary care patients studied showed abdominal obesity as measured by WC, whereas one-third was obese by BMI. Abdominal obesity was strongly associated with CVD and diabetes, even in patients lean by BMI. WC should be included in the routine clinical practice in addition to BMI.
