While there has been much research on the impacts of European trade and the resulting spread of invasive plants, animals and diseases elsewhere on the planet, considerably less attention has been paid to the reverse flow. The introductions of some naturalised plants, such as tomatoes, potatoes, tobacco and citrus, are better known. Europe's Mediterranean region provides a particularly fascinating focus for studying the ecological consequences of biotic introductions resulting from internal linkages, and European exploration and world trade since the 1500s, extending into the globally hyperconnected world of the present. As J. Donald Hughes has remarked, the concept of a Mediterranean region is somewhat vague, and is defined differently depending on whether scholars have favored biophysical, cultural or political variables and definitions. Here, the entirety of the Mediterranean Sea, and terrestrially, the Mediterranean-type climate (MTC) region is highlighted. The MTC is defined principally by its summer drought and winter rainfall pattern, with milder winter temperatures resulting from proximity to the ocean and resulting winter growing seasons. Much of the region is covered in semi-arid scrublands, which grow well over winter and then dry out over long, hot windy summers.

We compare Ya B Zeldovich's ideas about Brans Dicke theory and Mach's principles, contained in now-classical books, with modern results in this field. Our recent results on the Brans Dicke cosmology with the cosmological term are presented. The Friedmann-Brans-Dicke equations are written for the flat Universe. The initial conditions for the model are provided by the presently observed Hubble constant, its first time derivative (the deceleration parameter), and matter density. The cosmological scenario with the scale factor not vanishing in the past, corresponding to the absence of the cosmological singularity, is analytically calculated. Instead of the singularity, the scale factor experiences a 'bounce' and demonstrates regular behavior at all times. Some ideas related to Mach's principle are also discussed.

The idea that a space-time metric emerges as a Fisher-Rao “information metric” of instanton moduli space has been examined in several field theories, such as the Yang-Mills theories and nonlinear σ models. In this paper, we report that the flat Euclidean or Minkowskian metric, rather than an anti–de Sitter metric that generically emerges from instanton moduli spaces, can be obtained as the Fisher-Rao metric from a nontrivial solution of the massive Klein-Gordon field (a linear σ model). This realization of the flat space from the simple field theory would be useful to investigate the ideas that relate the space-time geometry with the information geometry.

In the last decade a variety of neutron optical devices based on this idea were realized such as collimators with absorbing as well as reflecting walls, radial benders and collimators and focusing devices which are all much shorter than their classical counterparts. I am not a historian. I am a landscape planner who looks toward the future. Even so, I know that most of the ideas that have shaped my work are old ideas. Recently, I decided to prepare a lecture to pay respect to people whose ideas have influenced me. In this published version, I will summarize a central and influential idea from each of about 30 people. This is, of course, a gross simplification. Each person produced a complex body of work, but each did one or two things that have had great influence on landscape planning, on me, and on many others. I have included some work in which I had a role, mainly to acknowledge those with whom I have had the pleasure of working.

IN 1939, SHORTLY AFTER HIS ARRIVAL AT HARVARD AS FOUNDING CURATOR of the Department of Printing and Graphic Arts in the Treasure Room ofWidener Library, Philip Hofer started planning an exhibition on early modern printmaking techniques, for, as he wrote to a correspondent, such an exhibition was greatly needed and few had been mounted in the country at the time. Hofer intended the show to be on permanent display and to comprise not only prints but also a number of printmaking surfaces, including woodblocks and copper plates from his collection.
