Ideas from the image processing literature have recently motivated a new set of clustering algorithms that rely on the concept of total variation. While these algorithms perform well for bi-partitioning tasks, their recursive extensions yield unimpressive results for multiclass clustering tasks. This paper presents a general framework for multiclass total variation clustering that does not rely on recursion. The results greatly outperform previous total variation algorithms and compare well with state-of-the-art NMF approaches.

In recent years, more and more people find traditional teaching methods are unable to meet the requirements of computer education in colleges which needs related experiments. In this work, we proposed a innovation teaching method based on robot projectdriven and applied this method in the teaching process of embedded system course. We design a project named "Line Tracking", which can be decomposed into several tasks, implemented by groups of students *** we provide a summary and analysis of the characteristics of this teaching mode as well as the effect of the curriculum *** project-driven method can exetremely stimulate the enthusiasm of students to involve themselves in projects design and execution.

When forming the grand coalition is not possible/optimal, agents need to create a coalition structure. The idea of the core can be extended to such a case. In this paper, we propose an innovative algorithm called CoreD to check core-non-emptiness for coalition structures. A more straightforward algorithm based on existing techniques, which we call CoreP, first obtains the value of optimal coalition structure by solving an integer programming problem. Then, it checks whether that value can be divided without making a blocking (dissatisfied) coalition. In contrast, CoreD first finds a minimal amount value of optimal coalition structure so that there exists no blocking coalition. Then, it checks whether the optimal value can be equal to the minimal value. We empirically show that when the core is empty, CoreD is by far superior to CoreP. Also, to find a second-best payoff vector when the core is empty, we propose a new solution concept called the weak ε-core~+, which can utilize the approximate value of the optimal coalition structure. Based on the idea of CoreD, we further develop an algorithm for checking the non-emptiness of the weak ε-core~+.

Very often people and in particular politicians and leaders in industry blame universities to disregard innovation processes and entrepreneurship. Mostly these critics are based on the (historic) 'linear model" of innovation which starts with an idea and, finally, leading directly to an (industrial) product on the market which will be a guaranty for jobs and competitiveness. In this presentation the importance of so called "unapplied" research or in other words basic research at universities is discussed. However, even everybody recognises the importance of basic research when it comes to funding one tries to shift the responsibility to another entity. The role of the universities in the in innovation processes in particular the contribution to the transformation from information to knowledge as well as the education of critical thinking graduates are emphasized. Furthermore suggestions of ideas to improve the relation between industry and university will be presented. Finally, politics is challenged to improve the understanding for universities which should be considered just as a production line for graduates, PhDs and scientific papers. Universities can and do more than that for our society and industry.

A new portable gamma-ray imaging spectroscopy system using three dimensional position-sensitive CdTeZe has been built at the University of Michigan. This system uses a first generation digital VAD_UM ASIC jointly developed by Integrated Detector Electronics AS (IDEAS) and the University of Michigan and allows four 20 × 20 × 15 mm~3 CdZnTe detectors to be simultaneously read out in either a full readout mode (where all channels from the triggered ASIC are read out to a personal computer) or in sparse readout mode (only the triggered channel and its neighbors are read out). The performance of the new system in terms of noise, spectroscopy, and isotope identification will be reported. The portable system is able to use standard AC power and is contained in a pelican case 54 × 30 × 32 cm~3.

This study investigated the effects of social comparison and social loafing on group performance when groups engaged asynchronously in idea generation. The preliminary test result indicated that the effects of social comparison and social loafing co-existed, group members may have chosen to engage in different behaviors (social loafing vs. social comparison) in different group interactions, however, their choice did not seem to affect the number of solutions generated. On the other hand, group members tended to elaborate on the ideas that were generated by co-workers. As a result, groups with less social loafing produced richer elaboration on ideas generated.

Real-time locating systems (RTLS) enable a number of new important applications. Their performance is mainly limited by wireless propagation impairments. This paper puts forth the idea to enhance coverage and accuracy of RTLS in the presence of severe non line-of-sight propagation conditions using low complexity non-regenerative ultra-wide bandwidth relays. A maximum likelihood position estimator is derived and the feasibility of relay-based positioning scheme is demonstrated.

We present the first fully polynomial approximation schemes for the maximum weighted (uncapacitated or capacitated) b–Matching problem for nonbipartite graphs that run in time (near) linear in the number of edges, that is, given any δ > 0 the algorithm produces a (1-δ) approximation in O(mpoly(δ~(-1), log n)) time. We provide fractional solutions for the standard linear programming formulations for these problems and subsequently also provide fully polynomial (near) linear time approximation schemes for rounding the fractional solutions. Through these problems as a vehicle, we also present several ideas in the context of solving linear programs approximately using fast primal-dual algorithms. First, we show that approximation algorithms can be used to reduce the width of the formulation, and as a consequence we induce faster convergence. Second, even though the dual of these problems have exponentially many variables and an efficient exact computation of dual weights is infeasible, we can efficiently compute and use a sparse approximation of the dual weights using a combination of (i) adding perturbation to the constraints of the poly-tope and (ii) amplification followed by thresholding of the dual weights. These algorithms also have the advantage that they use O(n poly(δ~(-1), log n)) storage space and only make O(δ~(-4) log~2(1/δ) log n) (or better) passes over a read only list of edges. These algorithms therefore can be run in the semi-streaming model and serve as exemplars where algorithms and ideas developed for the streaming model gives us algorithms for combinatorial optimization problems that were not known in absence of the streaming constraints.

The design of closed-loop finite-dimensional controllers for systems described by partial differential equations is tackled by combining tools borrowed by research areas such as approximation and operator theory. The proposed paradigm is based on the idea of using operators to account for the dynamics, regulator, and measurement mappings. Specifically, we rely on a well-established setting of Banach spaces, which is well-suited to supporting the generality of the approach. First, we define a class of Lipschitz operators with finite seminorm and formulate a tracking problem in the Banach spaces of real-valued functions. Second, we search for controllers that ensure stability and minimize a given performance index. The design of such regulators is achieved by resorting to an approximation scheme based on the extended Ritz method. Such a scheme consists in constraining the regulation operator to take on a fixed structure, where a finite number of free parameters can be suitably chosen. The problem is then reduced to a mathematical programming one of nonlinear type in general, in which the values of the parameters are optimized to guarantee stability. A family of nonlinear approximators to which the most common classes of feedforward neural networks belong are employed to accomplish the design via a convenient choice of their parameters (i.e., the weights), as shown by means of simulations with the optimal control of an unstable heat equation.

A library’s ability to innovate remains crucial to its sustained success, yet our understanding of innovation at the library level is still underdeveloped. While we know that libraries (like most service providers) typically innovate through the adoption of technological and organizational innovations, few attempts have been made to conceptualize this process. After reviewing briefly the literature on innovation at the library level, this short paper reports on an exploratory case study of the generation and evaluation of new service ideas (i.e., service innovation’s ‘front end’) by administrators at Cuyahoga County Public Library (CCPL) in Ohio, a public library renowned for its innovativeness. From this case study a working model is proposed and supported with examples.
