Pyrometallurgy is an ancient art which has defined significant stages of human development. Today, new opportunities for improvements in the economic, environmental, and workplace costs of metal production continue to provide challenges for the profession and industry. Top-submerged lancing technology for the high-temperature processing of a range of metals and wastes is an example that has been taken up by many companies around the world. The furnace system now marketed under the names of Ausmelt and Isasmelt was, in the early stage of its 33 years of development, known as Sirosmelt. The voyage from the original idea through theoretical, laboratory, pilot plant, and commercial developments to establishment of a worldwide business has been both stimulating and rewarding.

The article provides insight into the epistemological and anthropological aspect of the origination of the idea of scientific progress. It focuses on the relationship between individual's limited lifetime and the immensity of nature. The basic assumption is that the idea of scientific progress offers a solution of the epistemological problem stemming from the finding that there is no (teleological) coincidence between human cognitive abilities and the extent of nature. In order to facilitate the understanding of the origin of the idea of scientific progress, I propose distinction between the descriptive and prescriptive concepts of progress. While the descriptive notion of progress expresses the cumulative character of scientific knowledge and the superiority of the present over preceding generations, the prescriptive concept pertains to progressivist epistemology directing scientific research at the future development of knowledge. This article claims that the prevalent concept in Antiquity was the descriptive concept of scientific progress. The prescriptive notion had developed only in ancient astronomy. Early modern science was faced with similar issues as ancient astronomy mainly the empirical finding related to the inexhaustible character of nature. Consequently to the introduction of the idea of progress, the progress of sciences became a purpose in itself - hence becoming infinite.

The field of social networking studies how people are connected and the dynamics of their relationships within a specific community. Until the emergence of the Internet, most social network research was conducted by social scientists who often focused on understanding the dynamics within a specific physical community. Since the introduction of Web 2.0 technologies, new digital communities have emerged that have further enabled a rich set of novel interdisciplinary research questions.

Ideas on characteristic behavior of correlation functions underlie all models of turbulent diffusion. This paper sets forth a consistent analysis of these correlation ideas, beginning with Taylor's work of 1921, which pioneered the use of the autocorrelation function, and ending with works on the percolation theory of turbulent diffusion. Despite the fact that specific physical problems are significantly different, the commonality of the theoretical notions involved is emphasized. It is shown how the ideas of 'long-range' correlations and fractality enter into the percolation method. The 'universality' of the percolation approach to the description of turbulent diffusion is discussed at some length.

This paper reviews ideas presented at the February 1997 Hedberg Research Symposium on petroleum exploration and production in fold and thrust belts, held in Veracruz, Mexico. Exploration in fold-thrust belts has been expanding rapidly due to recent discoveries, improved demand for gas, and improved access to promising areas. At the same time, the methods for exploring in fold-thrust belts and in developing fields have evolved significantly. This was the first AAPG conference to focus on exploration and production within this structural domain. This conference brought together geologists and geophysicists from around the world who are actively working in fold-thrust belts to share their experiences and to address a broad range of exploration and production concerns. Symposium topics included hydrocarbon generation, migration, entrapment and preservation, exploration methods and strategies, field development, and data acquisition. Numerous case studies were presented illustrating these topics. Although exploration and production in fold-thrust belts must address many of the same issues as in other structural plays, there are additional challenges. Fold and thrust belts, for example, are characterized by complex trap geometry;a complex burial and thermal history;a narrow time line between the onset of petroleum generation, migration, and trap development;and a complex history of fill and spill. Other challenges can include difficult terrain, poor seismic quality, high cost of field operations, environmental constraints, and drilling problems related to active tectonic stress regimes. Success in this setting requires efficient application of all available tools to mitigate risk and costs, but given the complex geology and relatively poor imageability, explorationists must be willing to persist in the face of initial failures. The conference offered many illustrations of successful exploration and development programs to encourage geologists and geophysicists working in

In main control rooms of nuclear power plants (NPPs), operators often have to frequently switch their attention between alarm displays and system information displays to incorporate information from different screens. In this study, we proposed the idea of integrating system information into alarm displays. A bar-based integrated design of alarm display was proposed, and it was compared against a tile-based integrated design, and a traditional separate design through a lab experiment. To verify the idea of integration, forty-eight participants were randomly assigned to the three integration conditions to perform basic alarm response tasks, and their situation awareness levels and subjective evaluations were collected. The results indicated that the participants preferred the idea of integrating system information into alarm displays. Besides, the bar-based integrated display supported higher correct rate of answers to situation awareness questions related to the developing scenario than the tile-based integrated design. The idea of integrating system information into alarm displays merits further research and may be applicable to other safety critical industries. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The idea of moving picture expert group (MPEG) bitstream scaling relates to altering or scaling the amount of data in a previously compressed MPEG bitstream, The new scaled bitstream conforms to constraints that are not known nor considered when the original preceded bitstream was constructed, Numerous applications for video transmission and storage are being developed based on the MPEG video coding standard, Applications such as video on demand, trick-play track on digital video tape recorders (VTR's) and extended-play recording on VTR's motivate the idea of bitstream scaling, In this paper, we present several bitstream scaling methods for the purpose of reducing the rate of constant bit rate (CBR) encoded bitstreams. The different methods have varying hardware implementation complexity and associated trade-offs in resulting image quality. Simulation results on MPEG test sequences demonstrate the typical performance trade-offs of the methods.
