The WIMSD4 and CITATION codes are used to calculate neutronic parameters of a TRIGA reactor. The results are compared with experimental values. Five configurations are analysed and the excess reactivity worth, the fuel temperature reactivity coefficient, the control reactivity worth, safety and regulation rod of the TRIGA IPR-R1 reactor are calculated. By means of chemical kinetics modeling, it is possible to elucidate the main dissociation mechanisms of CO2 in a gliding arc plasmatron (GAP). We obtain good agreement between the calculated and experimental conversions and energy efficiencies, indicating that the model can indeed be used to study the underlying mechanisms. The calculations predict that vibration-induced dissociation is the main dissociation mechanism of CO2, but it occurs mainly from the lowest vibrational levels because of fast thermalization of the vibrational distribution. Based on these findings, we propose ideas for improving the performance of the GAP, but testing of these ideas in the simulations reveals that they do not always lead to significant enhancement, because of other side effects, thus illustrating the complexity of the process. Nevertheless, the model allows more insight into the underlying mechanisms to be obtained and limitations to be identified.

Basic ideas of the needle synthesis method applicable for solving any modern problem of synthesizing multilayer optical coatings are considered. Combining these ideas with the idea of the consistent evolution removes the problem of choosing the initial approximation and completely automates the process of solving the synthesis problem. On modern straight pianos, the inharmonicity of the lower strings is rather large especially for the first octave. Consequently, the timber of these strings can sometimes sound awful and chords on the first octave be highly dissonant. The idea of the present study is to show how this defect can be rectified using an inhomogeneous winding on the whole string in order to minimize inharmonicity. The problem is solved using an optimisation procedure considering a non uniform linear density. Results show that the inharmonicity of the first partials could be highly reduced by a non uniform winding limited to a quarter of the string.

Ideas on the global characteristics of the Vendian System and its fossil abundance have changed fundamentally in recent years. This is especially true of the microphytologic characteristics of the Lower Vendian, which includes a representative association developed worldwide of large acanthomorphic acritarchs of the so-called Pertatataka type. Similar associations of both organic-walled and silicified microfossils are encountered in Lower Vendian rocks of Australia, China, India, and Spitsbergen (see [1] for review and bibliography) and recently have been found on the East European Platform as well [2, 3]. The unique taxonomic composition of Pertatataka-type associations turns them into a reliable tool for correlating Lower Vendian rocks and allows the authors to solve a series of debatable problems of the Upper Proterozoic stratigraphy. They show in this work how new finds of organic-walled acritarchs from the Ura Formation (Dalnyaya Taiga Group, Patom Supergroup) make it possible to solve the inveterate strati-graphic problem of the age of these rocks and the status of the Baikalian unit.
