Harmony and Melody in Discourse on European Cohesion

From a corpus constituted by the five Cohesion Reports written by the European Commission, the article, using the methods of textual analysis, highlights the production of a European discourse on the territories participating to a process of institutionalization. Thus, starting from various authors analyses who validate the idea of institutionalization, the authors propose here to further explore this idea, using a method based on a lexical analysis software. The aim is then, on the one hand, to assess the extent to which the discourse of the Commission has elements of stability to justify the idea of institutionalization or, in the other hand, the elements of change over time that could compromise the very idea of institutionalization. The authors present the following results: the Commission discourse has important features of stability. Nevertheless, beyond this finding, there are changes at work. Their expression is rendered possible by the polysemy of the notions mobilized, and they are driven partly by a "rational" representation, but above all by the interplay of the succession of tensions and mind-shaping contexts in the construction of Europe.

Research commentary: Translating your research project from idea to action: Exploring funding sources

The first questions a novice or an experienced nurse researcher generally asks themselves when considering translating their research idea into an implementable research project is "who will fund my research?" Is there a funder/funding agency that might have an interest in my research topic? Are there any requests for proposals (RFPs) from funders that might "fit" your research topic? Is my research topic an area where I need large amounts of funding or can I use a small grant, that is, $5,000 to $20,000? How do I know what type of funding to look for? How do I know where to look for such funding opportunities? Where do I begin? Once you know what research you want to conduct, think through the process of writing a grant application as discussed in my earlier columns. Most importantly, determine, even if only in general terms, how much funding you might actually need to conduct your research study. This is important to know as it dictates where you might look for potential funding opportunities.

Upper limb functionality is an integral part of everyday interaction with the environment right from the very first minutes of human life. This paper investigates the experimental application of the IDEA (Input Device Evaluation Application) system on patients with multiple sclerosis at an early stage and without clinically overt motor deficits, in order to assess their upper limbs' motor skills. The objective of the current study is to test the sensitivity and reliability of the IDEA system regarding the evaluation of multiple kinetic parameters of upper limbs. 29 patients who were hospitalized in the Demyelinating Diseases Section of Eginition Hospital's Neurological Clinic and 25 healthy participated in the experiments. data derived from the experiment are complemented with demographics. The acquired results analysis reveals that the IDEA system sensitivity is high enough to predict the presence of early upper limb multiple sclerosis with a 69.1% success rate.

Robust optimization tries to find flexible solutions when solving problems with uncertain scenarios and vague information. In this paper we present a multiobjective evolutionary algorithm to solve robust multiobjective optimization problems. This algorithm is a novel adaptive method able to evolve separate populations of robust and non-robust solutions during the search. It is based on the infeasibility driven evolutionary algorithm (IDEA) and uses an additional objective to evaluate the robustness of the solutions. The original and adaptive IDEAs are applied to solve the r-TSALBP-m/A, an assembly line balancing model that considers a set of demand production plans and includes robustness functions for measuring the temporal overloads of the stations of the assembly line with respect to the plans. Our results show that the proposed adaptive IDEA gets more robust non-dominated solutions for the problem. Also, we show that, for the case of the r-TSALBP-m/A, we can obtain Pareto fronts with a higher convergence by using the adaptive version of the algorithm.

We compare Ya B Zeldovich's ideas about Brans Dicke theory and Mach's principles, contained in now-classical books, with modern results in this field. Our recent results on the Brans Dicke cosmology with the cosmological term are presented. The Friedmann-Brans-Dicke equations are written for the flat Universe. The initial conditions for the model are provided by the presently observed Hubble constant, its first time derivative (the deceleration parameter), and matter density. The cosmological scenario with the scale factor not vanishing in the past, corresponding to the absence of the cosmological singularity, is analytically calculated. Instead of the singularity, the scale factor experiences a 'bounce' and demonstrates regular behavior at all times. Some ideas related to Mach's principle are also discussed.

A new portable gamma-ray imaging spectroscopy system using three dimensional position-sensitive CdTeZe has been built at the University of Michigan. This system uses a first generation digital VAD_UM ASIC jointly developed by Integrated Detector Electronics AS (IDEAS) and the University of Michigan and allows four 20 × 20 × 15 mm~3 CdZnTe detectors to be simultaneously read out in either a full readout mode (where all channels from the triggered ASIC are read out to a personal computer) or in sparse readout mode (only the triggered channel and its neighbors are read out). The performance of the new system in terms of noise, spectroscopy, and isotope identification will be reported. The portable system is able to use standard AC power and is contained in a pelican case 54 × 30 × 32 cm~3.

We present the first fully polynomial approximation schemes for the maximum weighted (uncapacitated or capacitated) b–Matching problem for nonbipartite graphs that run in time (near) linear in the number of edges, that is, given any δ > 0 the algorithm produces a (1-δ) approximation in O(mpoly(δ~(-1), log n)) time. We provide fractional solutions for the standard linear programming formulations for these problems and subsequently also provide fully polynomial (near) linear time approximation schemes for rounding the fractional solutions. Through these problems as a vehicle, we also present several ideas in the context of solving linear programs approximately using fast primal-dual algorithms. First, we show that approximation algorithms can be used to reduce the width of the formulation, and as a consequence we induce faster convergence. Second, even though the dual of these problems have exponentially many variables and an efficient exact computation of dual weights is infeasible, we can efficiently compute and use a sparse approximation of the dual weights using a combination of (i) adding perturbation to the constraints of the poly-tope and (ii) amplification followed by thresholding of the dual weights. These algorithms also have the advantage that they use O(n poly(δ~(-1), log n)) storage space and only make O(δ~(-4) log~2(1/δ) log n) (or better) passes over a read only list of edges. These algorithms therefore can be run in the semi-streaming model and serve as exemplars where algorithms and ideas developed for the streaming model gives us algorithms for combinatorial optimization problems that were not known in absence of the streaming constraints.
