The FAZIA apparatus exploits Pulse Shape Analysis (PSA) to identify nuclear fragments stopped in the first layer of a Silicon-Silicon-CsI(Tl) detector telescope. In this work, for the first time, we show that the isotopes of fragments having atomic number as high as Z similar to 20 can be identified. Such a remarkable result has been obtained thanks to a careful construction of the Si detectors and to the use of low noise and high performance digitizing electronics. Moreover, optimized PSA algorithms are needed. This work deals with the choice of the best algorithm for PSA of current signals. A smoothing spline algorithm is demonstrated to give optimal results without requiring too much computational resources.

There can be economic and technical advantage in compensating for measured errors in the main reflector of a Cassegrain antenna by refiguring the subreflector. A design procedure (realised as a software package) is described whereby, given a set of measured main reflector errors, ordinates defining a comprehensively checked redesign for the subreflector are provided. Efficient ray tracing and interpolation algorithms are included in the software package, which is illustrated with numerical results indicating the improvements in antenna performance to be expected when a Cassegrain subreflector is redesigned.

Ultra-low-cost colour demosaicking VLSI design for real-time video applications

A novel low-complexity and high-quality colour demosaicking algorithm is proposed for very large-scale integration (VLSI) implementation for real-time video applications. It consists of a boundary detector, a boundary mirror model and five green and red-blue colour interpolation models. Two of the five interpolation models can be selected adaptively according to boundary and position information. In addition, a boundary mirror machine and identical direction technique were used to improve the qualities of the reconstructed images. To reduce the hardware cost, memory requirement and power consumption, a hardware-sharing technique and register bank design were used to realise the proposed algorithm. The VLSI architecture of this work contains only 2.9 K gate counts and its core area is 35 966 mu m(2) synthesised by a 0.18 mu m CMOS process. The synthesised results show that this design performs an operating frequency of 100 MHz processing rate by consuming only 1.83 mW. Compared with the previous low-complexity designs, this work not only reduces at least 48.2% of gate counts and 96.7% of power consumption but also improves the average CPSNR quality by more than 0.78 dB.

Geometrical distortion correction for extremely high-squint parameter-adjusting synthetic aperture radar

The parameter-adjusting polar format algorithm (PFA) is demonstrated to be an effective imaging method for the high-squint synthetic aperture radar (SAR) in a previous study by the authors. However, while the previous work only focuses on the demonstration on the effectiveness of the parameter-adjusting PFA in removing the quadratic and higher order phases, the compensation to the linear phase, which determines the geometrical distortion, has not been discussed yet. Therefore, this paper presents a geometrical distortion correction (GDC) method for the extremely highsquint parameter-adjusting SAR. By deriving the linear phase error induced by the planar wavefront approximation, the positions of the focused scatterers are corrected via the cubic interpolation. The presented approach is verified by a simulated Ka-band airborne SAR in a geometry with an 85 degrees squint angle.

Subdivision Schemes Based Collocation algorithms for Solution of Fourth Order Boundary Value Problems

We present two collocation algorithms based on interpolating and approximating subdivision schemes for the solution of fourth order boundary value problems arising in the mathematical modeling of viscoelastic, and inelastic flows, deformation of beams, arches, and load bearing members like street lights and robotic arms in multipurpose engineering systems. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the algorithms. We conclude that approximating schemes based collocation algorithms give better solution than interpolating schemes based collocation algorithms. Main purpose of this paper is to explore and seek the applications of interpolating and approximating subdivision schemes in the field of boundary value problems along with intrinsic comparison of the results obtained by algorithms based on these schemes. A comparison with other approaches of this type of boundary value problems in order to see the advantages of the proposed methods is also given.

Fault diagnosis for track circuit using AOK-TFRs and AGA

This paper presents a collaborative fault diagnosis system for compensation capacitor in track circuit using adaptive optimal kernel time-frequency representations (AOK-TFRs) and adaptive genetic algorithm (AGA) based on train operational data recorded in cab signal. First, AOK-TFRs technique is applied for single compensation capacitor fault diagnosis. To deal with multiple faults, the AGA based method is introduced, however, with a relatively low efficiency of diagnosis. According to the characteristics of both methods, a collaborative fault diagnosis system is established. Experiments show that the system greatly improves the diagnosis efficiency and can be used successfully. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AN APPROACHING FOURIER ANALYSIS OF THE RELAXATION EFFECT ON THE SIMPLE ALGORITHM

The Fourier decomposition is employed to derive the error amplification matrix for the SIMPLE algorithm implemented on a collocated grid with the Rhie-Chow interpolation method incorporated, and an approaching method is developed to study the effect of relaxation factors on the convergence behaviors of SIMPLE based on characteristic analysis of the lowest and highest frequency errors. The study indicates that convergence can be guaranteed by damping out the highest and lowest frequencies with conditional combinations of both factors. In the case of convergence, the optimum convergence rate almost depends on the velocity relaxation factor, and a relatively larger velocity factor can accelerate the optimal rate.

A Reconstruction Algorithm for Blade Surface Based on Less Measured Points

A reconstruction algorithm for blade surface from less measured points of section curves is given based on B-spline surface interpolation. The less measured points are divided into different segments by the key geometric points and throat points which are defined according to design concepts. The segmentations are performed by different fitting algorithms with consideration of curvature continuity as their boundary condition to avoid flow disturbance. Finally, a high-quality reconstruction surface model is obtained by using the B-spline curve meshes constructed by paired points. The advantage of this algorithm is the simplicity and effectivity reconstruction of blade surface to ensure the aerodynamic performance. Moreover, the obtained paired points can be regarded as measured points to measure and reconstruct the blade surface directly. Experimental results show that the reconstruction blade surface is suitable for precisely representing blade, evaluating machining accuracy, and analyzing machining allowance.

Engine Excitation Force Identification on the Basis of Discrete Spectrum Correction

The interpolation method of discrete spectrum is applied to the engine excitation force identification. The frequency, amplitude, and phase of the vibration response of each measuring point on cylinder surface are obtained accurately based on the interpolation method. Combination with the inertia parameters and the dynamic properties of the mounts, the excitation force, and moment at the center of gravity of engine can be exactly retrieved. The nonlinear problem caused by the imprecise phase of the measurement points is avoided, and the identified method is simplified. Simulation results confirm the importance of the interpolation method on the accurate identification of the excitation force. Influences on the excitation force identification are analyzed quantitatively. The reasons causing the errors are analyzed and the avoidance methods are given too. Through the multi-rigid-body dynamics model simulation, the excitation force identification method is confirmed. Then, the proposed method is carried out on an engine.

Hiding Multiple Images into a Single Image Using Up-Sampling

The goal of multiple-image hiding is to hide several secret images within another carrier image without significantly changing its appearance, and then perfectly reconstruct all of the secret images. The challenge is to ensure that the stego-image has great visual quality and can resist various steganalysis under the premise of hiding as much information as possible in one image. To address this issue, the majority of known image-hiding methods focus on hiding images using compression techniques. In this article, we present a novel multiple-image hiding method based on up-sampling and reversible color transformation. First, the interpolation algorithm up-samples the carrier image, so that the attribute of similar neighboring pixel values in the up-sampled image can significantly improve the effect of image hiding. The embedding procedure is then performed using the proposed Euclidean Distance (ED)-based block matching and reversible color transformation, which decreases the chance of local blurring in the stego-image. Experimental results show that the proposed method surpasses existing advanced methods by achieving an average of 33 dB and 28 dB of PSNR for the stego-image with a hiding capacity 2 BPP and 8 BPP, and obtaining 100% reconstructing accuracy for all secret images. It also has a high level of resistance to steganalysis and a strong robustness against various image-processing attacks.
