A novel approach for exploring the trade-offs between several features of students' well-being

We propose a novel approach to explore the trade-offs between four features of students' well-being (anxiety, motivation, sense of belonging, and bullying). On the one hand, a multiobjective interval problem is formulated by considering these distinct components of well-being as objective functions, being then instantiated with confidence intervals obtained from distinct econometric estimations. Then, the problem is solved through the use of a reference point approach that allows accounting for the decision maker's preferences by considering a set of weight vectors that can be used to express his/her preferences regarding the importance that should be given to each objective function. The results provide information on how the improvement of one objective might affect the remaining objectives. Furthermore, the student's profile corresponding to each scrutinized solution is also made available. Overall, the results claim that bullying is the most affected objective, highlighting the need to foster antibullying education policies in Spanish schools, according to PISA 2015 data. Finally, some educational polices are suggested in order to enhance students' well-being.

Multi-Disciplinary Optimization for Multi-Objective Uncertainty Design of Thin Walled Beams

The focus of this paper is concentrated on multi-disciplinary and multi-objective optimization for thin walled beam systems considering safety, normal mode, static loading-bearing and weight, in which the uncertainties of the parameters are described via intervals. The size and shape of the cross-section are treated as design parameters during optimization. Considering the lightweight and safety, the design problem is formulated with two individual objectives to measure structural weight and maximum energy absorption, respectively, constrained by the average force, normal mode and maximum stress. The optimization problem with uncertainties is further transformed into a deterministic optimization based on interval number programming. The approximation models, coupled with the design of experiment (DOE) technique, are employed to construct objective functions and constraints. The uncertain optimization problem characterized with these approximation models is performed and applied to a practical thin walled beam design problems.

Resolution of an uncertain closed-loop logistics model: An application to fuzzy linear programs with risk analysis

With the urgency of global warming, green supply chain management, logistics in particular, has drawn the attention of researchers. Although there are closed-loop green logistics models in the literature, most of them do not consider the uncertain environment in general terms. In this study, a generalized model is proposed where the uncertainty is expressed by fuzzy numbers. An interval programming model is proposed by the defined means and mean square imprecision index obtained from the integrated information of all the level cuts of fuzzy numbers. The resolution for interval programming is based on the decision maker (DM)'s preference. The resulting solution provides useful information on the expected solutions under a confidence level containing a degree of risk. The results suggest that the more optimistic the DM is, the better is the resulting solution. However, a higher risk of violation of the resource constraints is also present. By defining this probable risk, a solution procedure was developed with numerical illustrations. This provides a DM trade-off mechanism between logistic cost and the risk. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Uncertainties in the resource conservation problems: a review

Process integration, which started its development in the early 1970s, is an emerging branch of study for conserving various resources. Process integration studies the interdependencies among various process units at the system level and the development and use of tools for holistically designing process networks with generic optimization of resources and sustainable development. The problems addressed in process integration are often referred to as resource conservation or source-sink allocation problems. Most of these problems are solved with precise input parameters. However, due to a wide range of known and unknown factors, these input parameters are uncertain in practical applications. To make the designed network more reliable, these uncertainties should be incorporated at the targeting stage of the problem. Over the years, researchers have used various approaches for managing resource conservation networks under uncertainty. This review examines the different mathematical optimization approaches adopted for handling uncertainties associated with the resource conservation networks along with their practical applications in recent years. The paper primarily examines the four most common approaches used to address uncertainties in process integration: sensitivity analysis, chance-constrained programming, fuzzy optimization, and interval programming. Recent advances in handling uncertainties within the framework of process integration, covering both mathematical programming and Pinch analysis, are also discussed. The review ends with a discussion on the significance and contributions of recent approaches. Some of the important future research directions are also identified to be addressed using process integration and Pinch analysis. [GRAPHICS] .

New approach for solving intuitionistic fuzzy multi-objective transportation problem

Multi-objective transportation problem (MOTP) under intuitionistic fuzzy (IF) environment is analysed in this paper. Due to the fluctuation of market scenario, we assume that the transportation cost, the supply and the demand parameters are not always precise. Hence, the parameters are imprecise, i.e., they are IF numbers. Considering the specific cut interval, the IF transportation cost matrix is converted to interval cost matrix in our proposed problem. Again, using the same concept, the IF supply and the IF demand of the MOTP are reduced to the interval form. Then the proposed MOTP is changed into the deterministic MOTP, which includes interval form of the objective functions. Two approaches, namely intuitionistic fuzzy programming and goal programming, are used to derive the optimal solutions of our proposed problem, and then the optimal solutions are compared. A numerical example is included to illustrate the feasibility and the applicability of the proposed problem. Finally, we present the conclusions with the future scopes of our study.

A carbon footprint-based closed-loop supply chain model under uncertainty with risk analysis: A case study

The management of products' end-of-life and the recovery of used products has gained significant importance in recent years. In this paper, we address the carbon footprint-based problem that arises in a closed-loop supply chain where returned products are collected from customers. These returned products can either be disposed of or be remanufactured to be resold as new ones. Given this environment, an optimization model for a closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) in which carbon emission is expressed in terms of environmental constraints, i.e., carbon emission constraints, is developed. These constraints aim to limit the carbon emission per unit of product supplied with different transportation modes. Here, we design a closed-loop network where capacity limits, single-item management and uncertainty on product demands and returns are considered. First, fuzzy mathematical programming is introduced for uncertain modeling. Then, the statistical approach to the possibility to synthesize fuzzy information is utilized. Therefore, using a defined possibilistic mean and variance, we transform the proposed fuzzy mathematical model into a crisp form to facilitate efficient computation and analysis. Finally, the risk caused by violating the estimated resource constraints is analyzed so that decision makers (DMs) can trade off between the expected cost savings and the expected risk. Nowadays, there has been an increasing attention to enterprise resource planning (ERP) software implementation projects due to the rapid improvements in information technologies. In this context, project managers may face with several uncertainties during the project planning and scheduling phases. In this paper, scheduling of a multi-objective ERP implementation project is targeted under human resource constraints and uncertainty. Through the proposed interval programming based solution approach, uncertainties of the project parameters/inputs as well as the project schedules/outputs which represent the starting or completion times of the activities can be easily handled. Therefore, several alternative project schedules can be generated by making use of the proposed approach according to the risk appetite of the project managers. Additionally, efficiency and reliability factors of the human resources are also taken into account. Finally, computational results of a real-life application have shown that more applicable and reliable compromise solutions can be generated by the proposed approach considering both project makespan and effective utilization of the human resource capacities.

In this paper, two kinds of optimality concepts are introduced into fuzzy linear programming problems in order to discuss the rationality of an obtained solution. One is possible optimality evaluating the possibility degree to which the solution is optimal. The other, the dual concept, is necessary optimality evaluating the necessity degree to which the solution is optimal. When possibility distributions are defined by closed intervals, degrees of possible and necessary optimalities become binary. Necessary and sufficient conditions for possible and necessary optimalities are induced in this case. Extending the results, methods of calculating the degrees of possible and necessary optimalities are proposed. Some numerical examples are given to demonstrate the proposed methods.

The global financial crisis has brought severe impacts on the Portuguese economy. In this context, the Portuguese government has recently adopted harsh measures that will have deep impacts on peoples' lives. This paper discusses the influence of these measures on economic growth, social well-being, energy consumption as well as its impacts on the environment using a multi-objective linear programming model based on input-output analysis. A Fuzzy Set-Based Approach to Multi-objective Multi-item Solid Transportation Problem Under Uncertainty

In this paper, a multi-objective multi-item solid transportation problem (MOMISTP) with parameters, e.g., transportation costs, supplies, and demands, as trapezoidal fuzzy variables is formulated. In this MOMISTP, there are limitations on some items and conveyances so that some special items cannot be carried by means of some special conveyances. With the use of the nearest interval approximation of trapezoidal fuzzy numbers, an interval programming model is constructed for the fuzzy MOMISTP and then this model is turned into its deterministic form. Then, a new interval fuzzy programming approach is developed to obtain the optimal solution of the problem. Finally, a numerical example is presented for illustration.
