In this paper, we propose a new fast CU partition method for VVC intra coding based on the cross-block difference. This difference is measured by the gradient and the content of sub-blocks obtained from partition and is employed to guide the skipping of unnecessary horizontal and vertical partition modes. With this guidance, a fast determination of block partitions is accordingly achieved. Compared with VVC, our proposed method can save 41.64% (on average) encoding time with only 0.97% (on average) increase of BD-rate.

We present a novel low-complexity algorithm for feature-based block size decision in HEVC intra coding. Our approach evaluates a set of point pairs within a coding unit (CU) in order to determine whether a CU should be further split into smaller sub CUs for coding. We apply a modified version of the Binary Robust Independent Elementary Feature (BRIEF) descriptor, which in its original version is usually applied to describe local image properties in the context of image/video analysis. While the elements of the original BRIEF descriptor describe which pixel of a pixel pair has the higher value, the modified descriptor evaluates whether the difference between the pixel values is above a pre-defined threshold, which is determined by training. If a certain number of pixel pair differences exceed their corresponding threshold the CU is split into its four sub CUs. Furthermore, we restrict the feature point pairs to be located within different potential sub CUs. For an adaptive training approach, we achieved in our experiments an average encoding time reduction of 58% compared to the HEVC reference software HM12.0 with an average rate increase of 3.8% at equal quality and an average encoding time reduction of 65% with an average rate increase of 5.98% at equal quality for an offline training approach.

In the latest HEVC video coding standard, angular intra prediction (AIP) applies 35 modes including 33 angular modes which can handle blocks with direction information well, and other 2 modes (DC and planar) which are used to predict smooth blocks. However, for blocks with complex texture, these modes may not give good predictions. Some complex blocks can be predicted well by template matching prediction (TMP) which was proposed to predict blocks having similar patterns in the coded regions of the same frame without the cost of large overheads. In this paper, a novel hybrid AIP/TMP is proposed to improve the prediction efficiency. Experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve a coding gain of about 2.5% for high resolution sequences on average compared to the AIP in HEVC. The gain can be up to 4.2%.

3D extension of High Efficiency Video coding (3D-HEVC) is the newest international standard for 3D video coding. Compared to conventional HEVC, the encoding materials consist of multi-view color textures and associated depth maps. However, the advanced techniques enhance the coding efficiency at the cost of the computation complexity and time consumption. In this paper, we propose an early termination algorithm to speed-up the encoding procedure. With the complexity check by total sum of squares (TSS) and the RD-cost criterion, we effectively accelerate the depth intra coding of 3D-HEVC and maintain the video quality. The experimental results show that both of the time-saving and the BD-BR performance of our method outperform previous works.

In High Efficiency Video coding (HEVC), optimal coding unit (CU) size is decided based on recursive rate-distortion cost comparison, which consumes high computational resources. In this paper, an effective HEVC intra CU size decision algorithm is proposed to speed up the encoding process. The algorithm is based on progressive Bayesian classification, which is composed of two cascade classifiers: a three-class classifier and a binary classifier, at every coding depth. The three-class classifier firstly partitions the feature space into three regions: split, indistinct and non-split regions. Then, the binary classifier further partitions the indistinct region into split and non-split regions by utilizing additional complicated features. The thresholds of the two classifiers are well designed based on Bayesian risk to balance coding efficiency and complexity. All classifiers are online trained and experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can save approximately 51%similar to 63% of the total encoding time of HM 15.0 with negligible loss on rate-distortion performance.

Perceptual video coding plays a very important role in video codec optimization aiming at removing the perceptual redundancies in video content. In this paper, a just noticeable distortion (JND) guided perceptually lossless coding framework is proposed for Versatile Video coding (VVC) intra coding. Within this framework, a pattern-based pixel wise JND model is employed to guide the distortion distribution, and subsequently the most appropriate quantization parameter is chosen for each coding Tree Unit (CTU). The content adaptive Laplacian distribution based D-Q model based on a two pass coding framework is established to derive the most proper QP that satisfies the perceptually lossless coding criteria. The whole framework is integrated into the H.266/VVC intra coding framework. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can achieve high accuracy prediction and efficient perceptually lossless intra coding, leading to around 10% bitrate savings comparing with the frame level QP derivation scheme.

This paper presents an open-source Kvazaar encoder for HEVC intra coding. This academic software encoder has been developed from the scratch using C as an implementation language by prioritizing modularity, portability, and readability of the source code. Kvazaar implements almost the same intra coding functionality as HEVC reference encoder (HM) but its rewritten source code makes it significantly faster. In all-intra (AI) coding, a single-threaded C implementation of Kvazaar is 2.3 times faster than HM at a cost of 1.7% bit rate increase. The respective values with a high speed preset of Kvazaar are 10.6 and 8.8%. Compared to a single-threaded C++ implementation of x265, Kvazaar improves rate-distortion performance and increases encoding speed in both high-quality and high-speed test cases. Kvazaar has a particular edge in the high-speed test case where it almost halves the BD-rate loss and more than doubles the performance.

In this paper, a novel intra coding scheme is proposed. The proposed scheme improves H.264 intra coding from three aspects: 1) H.264 intra prediction is enhanced with additional bi-directional intra prediction modes;2) H.264 integer transform is supplemented with directional transforms for some prediction modes;and 3) residual coefficient coding in CAVLC is improved. Compared to H.264, together the improvements can bring on average 7% and 10% coding gain for CABAC and for CAVLC, respectively, with average coding gain of 12% for HD sequences.

Most encoders in High Efficiency Video coding (HEVC) standard determine the coding unit (CU) partitions in a depth-first full search manner. For intra coding, this method ignores the impact of partitioning on the subsequent blocks, which incurs less accurate prediction and worsens encoding efficiency performance. In this paper, we present an enhanced CU partitioning search method, where the various partitioning types are examined to effectively mitigate such impact. To reduce the additional complexity, we further refine the search candidates, early terminate the search process, and reuse encoding information. Experimental results show that compared with the unmodified HM software, the proposed method achieves a bit rate saving of 0.34% on average and 0.67% at most. Since our method doesn't modify the original definition of HEVC, the encoded bitstreams can be uncompressed by a standard HEVC decoder with no complexity increase.

In the hybrid video coding framework, transform is adopted to exploit the dependency within the input signal. In this paper, we propose a deep learning-based nonlinear transform for intra coding. Specifically, we incorporate the directional information into the residual domain. Then, a convolutional neural network model is designed to achieve better decorrelation and energy compaction than the conventional discrete cosine transform. This work has two main contributions. First, we propose to use the intra prediction signal to reduce the directionality in the residual. Second, we present a novel loss function to characterize the efficiency of the transform during the training. To evaluate the compression performance of the proposed transform, we implement it into the High Efficiency Video coding reference software. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves up to 1.79% BD-rate reduction for natural videos.
