Efficient Depth intra Frame coding in 3D-HEVC by Corner Points

To improve the coding performance of depth maps, 3D-HEVC includes several new depth intra coding tools at the expense of increased complexity due to a flexible quadtree coding Unit/Prediction Unit (CU/PU) partitioning structure and a huge number of intra mode candidates. Compared to natural images, depth maps contain large plain regions surrounded by sharp edges at the object boundaries. Our observation finds that the features proposed in the literature either speed up the CU/PU size decision or intra mode decision and they are also difficult to make proper predictions for CUs/PUs with the multi-directional edges in depth maps. In this work, we reveal that the CUs with multi-directional edges are highly correlated with the distribution of corner points (CPs) in the depth map. CP is proposed as a good feature that can guide to split the CUs with multi-directional edges into smaller units until only single directional edge remains. This smaller unit can then be well predicted by the conventional intra mode. Besides, a fast intra mode decision is also proposed for non-CP PUs, which prunes the conventional HEVC intra modes, skips the depth modeling mode decision, and early determines segment-wise depth coding. Furthermore, a two-step adaptive corner point selection technique is designed to make the proposed algorithm adaptive to frame content and quantization parameters, with the capability of providing the flexible tradeoff between the synthesized view quality and complexity. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can provide about 66% time reduction of the 3D-HEVC intra encoder without incurring noticeable performance degradation for synthesized views and it also outperforms the previous state-of-the-art algorithms in term of time reduction and Delta BDBR.

To adapt to the existing video coding standards, omnidirectional videos are usually projected from Three-Dimensional (3D) sphere to Two-Dimensional (2D) plane. However, this projection will cause geometrical stretching distortion and boundary discontinuity, which may degrade coding efficiency. In this paper, we present a Spherical Rotation based Omnidirectional Video coding (SROVC) method, which exploits the textural properties of omnidirectional videos with spherical rotation. Firstly, SROVC framework is presented and Full-traversal Spherical Rotation (FSR) is developed to derive the optimal rotation angle with frame-level Rate Distortion Optimization (RDO). Secondly, to achieve comparable coding gains and lower computational complexity when compared with FSR, a Texture-aware Spherical Rotation (TSR) method is proposed to predict the rotation angle. Finally, to further reduce complexity and maintain coding efficiency, a Group-oriented TSR (G-TSR) approach is presented, in which the group length is statistically determined. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed TSR and G-TSR schemes can achieve bit rate reductions up to 4.38%, 0.94% and 0.89% on average for CubeMap Projection (CMP) based high efficiency omnidirectional video coding. Additionally, the TSR scheme achieves bit rate saving from 0.91% to 1.19% on average under three more CMP-based projection formats, and 1.89% for joint rotation of X, Y, and Z axes.

This paper presents fast and efficient intra prediction algorithms for screen content coding (SCC). The proposed algorithms focus on smooth regions frequently appeared in screen content videos, which have the characteristics of noiselessness. All the samples in a noiseless smooth region exhibit exactly the same pixel value. We then propose two intra coding techniques for noiseless smooth regions in SCC based on the smoothness of the boundary samples which are used for intra prediction. Our proposed algorithm can reduce computational complexity by at most 26.7% while keeping nearly the same video quality. Moreover, by removing the redundant coding bits for intra prediction modes, computational complexity can be further reduced to at most 53.3% in terms of encoding time with bitrate reduction up to 1.2%.

3D-HEVC is a good coding solution for multi-view video plus depth data. It achieves good coding performance of synthesized views. However, depth intra coding brings unbearable complexity, which is the most urgent issue to be solved for the practical applications. Typically, depth maps have a good feature of structure or less texture compared with natural videos. Therefore, in this paper, a fast depth intra coding algorithm is proposed to speed up the quadtree decision by the good feature-corner point (CP). The proposed algorithm can adaptively extract CPs and preallocate the depth level of coding quadtree. The large size of coding units (CUs) can be skipped for blocks, which have higher predicted depth level. On the contrary, the blocks, with lower predicted depth level, do not check the smaller size of CUs. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can provide about 41% time reduction while maintaining the BD performance.

Recent MPEG video compression standards are still block-based: blocks of pixels are sequentially coded using spatial or temporal prediction schemes. For each block, a vector of coding parameters has to be selected. In order to limit the complexity of this decision, independence between blocks is assumed, and coding parameters are locally optimized to maximize the coding efficiency. Few studies have investigated the benefits of inter-block dependencies consideration using Joint Rate-Distortion Optimization (JRDO), especially in intra coding. To the best of our knowledge, maximum achievable gains of such approaches have never been exhibited. In this paper, we propose two JRDO models performing joint optimization of multiple blocks applied to intra prediction mode decision. The proposed models have been evaluated in both H.264/AVC and HEVC standards. These two models enables a bitrate saving with respect to the classical RDO model up to -3.10% and -2.31% in H.264/AVC and HEVC, respectively.

intraDT is an intra coding algorithm in AVS3, which is used to further divide the current coding block to obtain multiple sub blocks for prediction. The optimal prediction modes in each sub block are selected adaptively. In this paper, we propose a split-based intra coding algorithm based on the intraDT algorithm of AVS3, which makes the partition of sub blocks match the image texture more accurately. The improvement of the proposed method mainly lies in the addition of vertical and horizontal symmetric binary partition mode, and the specified transform partition modes corresponding to the two prediction partition modes, compared with intraDT. The optional prediction partition modes are extended, and the transform partition modes under the new partition modes are not necessary to be transmitted. The new partition modes can match the image texture more accurately, and find a better balance between the depth of CU partition and the redundancy of prediction block partition. The experimental results show that the proposed method is effective for the test sequences in common test condition in AVS3. The BD-rate for the components of Y, U and V achieve gains of 0.13%, 0.44% and 0.32% under All-intra configuration, respectively, while achieving gains of 0.12%, 0.02% and 0.26% under Random-Access configuration.

Compared with H.264, High Efficient Video coding (HEVC) improves the coding efficiency by 50% at the price of significant increase in encoding time, due to Rate Distortion Optimization (RDO) on large variations of block sizes and prediction modes. In this paper, a fast intra coding algorithm is proposed to alleviate the high computational complexity of HEVC intra-frame coding. The proposed algorithm is based on machine learning and Laplacian Transparent Composite Model (LPTCM). Features called Summation of Binarized Outlier Coefficient (SBOC) vectors are firstly extracted from original frames by using LPTCM and then fed into online trained Support Vector Machine (SVM). Two SVMs are combined to predict coding Unit (CU) decisions so that the encoding process can be significantly sped up. Additionally, a performance controller is introduced to ensure the robustness of machine learning models. It is shown by experiments that compared with HM 16.3, the proposed algorithm reduces the encoding time, on average, by 48% with negligible increase in BD-rate.

The encoding efficiency of the High Efficiency Video coding (HEVC) standard is considerably higher than that of its predecessors. The intra coding method adopted by this new standard includes a larger number of prediction directions than those of its preceding standards namely H.264/AVC. This improvement contributed to enhance the encoding efficiency, but carried with it a much larger computational complexity. This paper presents an algorithm to speed-up the intra mode decision procedure through the exploitation of inter-level correlation observed between the predominant edge orientation of the current PU and those of the PUs already coded at lower levels of the encoding quadtree. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm provides a decrease of up to 39.6% in the HEVC intra coding processing time, with a small increase in bitrate (avg. 1.2%) and a negligible reduction in PSNR values.

In this paper, we propose a luminance-guided chrominance image enhancement convolutional neural network for HEVC intra coding. Specifically, we firstly develop a gated recursive asymmetric-convolution block to restore each degraded chrominance image, which generates an intermediate output. Then, guided by the luminance image, the quality of this intermediate output is further improved, which finally produces the high-quality chrominance image. When our proposed method is adopted in the compression of color images with HEVC intra coding, it achieves 28.96% and 16.74% BD-rate gains over HEVC for the U and V images, respectively, which accordingly demonstrate its superiority. High Efficiency Video coding (HEVC) is a new video compression standard for high resolution video content, which only needs 50% bit rate of the H.264/AVC at the same perceptual quality. However, high computational complexity increases dramatically for adopting quad-tree structured coding Unit (CU). In this paper, a fast CU size decision and Prediction Unit (PU) mode decision algorithm is presented for HEVC intra coding. It exploits the depth information of neighboring CUs to make an early CU split decision or CU pruning decision. Moreover, there are correlations between the higher layer prediction mode and current layer mode in PUs. By using these correlations, we can terminate some prediction modes which are rarely selected as the optimal mode. Experimental results illustrate that the proposed method can save 37.91% computational complexity on average as compared with the current HM with only 0.66% increase in BDBR and 0.03 dB loss in BDPSNR.
