Inter-view prediction of intra mode decision for high-efficiency video coding-based multiview video coding

intra prediction is a very important tool in current video coding standards. High-efficiency video coding (HEVC) intra prediction presents relevant gains in encoding efficiency when compared to previous standards, but with a very important increase in the computational complexity since 33 directional angular modes must be evaluated. Motivated by this high complexity, this article presents a complexity reduction algorithm developed to reduce the HEVC intra mode decision complexity targeting multiview videos. The proposed algorithm presents an efficient fast intra prediction compliant with singleview and multiview video encoding. This fast solution defines a reduced subset of intra directions according to the video texture and it exploits the relationship between prediction units (PUs) of neighbor depth levels of the coding tree. This fast intra coding procedure is used to develop an inter-view prediction method, which exploits the relationship between the intra mode directions of adjacent views to further accelerate the intra prediction process in multiview video encoding applications. When compared to HEVC simulcast, our method achieves a complexity reduction of up to 47.77%, at the cost of an average BD-PSNR loss of 0.08 dB. (C) 2014 SPIE and IS&T

In H. 264/AVC, discrete cosine transform (DCT) is performed on the residual blocks after prediction. However, the mismatch between variable block sizes and the fixed transform matrix not only degrades decorrelation performance but also causes severe blocky artifacts inside the blocks. In previous work, M-channel filter bank system (MCFBS) was proposed to overcome these defects. However, the increased percentage of encoding time by using MCFBS is very high, especially for intra coding. More seriously, the constructed M-channel filter bank with floating-point coefficients is an obstacle to hardware implementation. In this work, a hybrid M-channel Filter bank and DCT (HMD) framework is proposed for intra coding. Besides, the integer transform of a newly constructed M-channel filter bank is also implemented for HMD. Experimental results demonstrate that HMD can reduce 64-69% of the complexity of MCFBS with negligible quality degradation.

intra coding is used for reducing the spatial redundancy in video coding. H.264/MPEG-4 advanced video coding (AVC) supports several types of macroblock (MB) mode for intra coding. Also, each of these MB modes has several directional prediction modes, which significantly improve the intra coding efficiency, but also increase the encoding complexity. In this letter, we present an adaptive single-multiple prediction method for H.264/AVC intra coding that not only improves the coding efficiency, but also reduces the encoding complexity. The proposed method adaptively skips the prediction mode bits, so that the encoder complexity can be reduced. The experimental results show that the proposed method achieves a bit-rate reduction of 3.58% and encoding time reduction of 42.4%.

This paper presents a High-Level Synthesis (HLS) flow for mapping a software HEVC encoder into Altera CycloneV SoC-FPGA. The starting point is a C implementation of an open-source Kvazaar HEVC intra encoder, which is minimally refined for SystemC design space exploration and automatic Catapult-C RTL generation. The final implementation involves Kvazaar encoder executed in Linux on dual-core ARM, and HW accelerated intra prediction on FPGA. Changing the SW/ HW partitioning or modifying the implementation takes hours instead of weeks with Catapult-C HLS. In addition, the design is portable to other platforms without major manual re-writing. We obtained 9 fps full-HD intra prediction speed with a single accelerator on Altera Cyclone V SX on Terasic VEEK-MT-C5SoC board including video capture and HEVC video streaming via Ethernet. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported HLS assisted implementation of HEVC encoder on SoC-FPGA.

The recent High Efficiency Video coding (HEVC) standard was designed to achieve significantly improved compression performance compared to the widely used H.264/AVC standard. This achievement was motivated by the ever-increasing popularity of high-definition video applications and the emergence of ultra-HD. Unfortunately, this comes at the expense of a significant increase in computational complexity for both inter and intra coding. To alleviate this problem, in this paper, we propose a fast intra mode decision method based on improved edge detection, consideration of most relevant modes from neighboring blocks, and classification of SATD costs permitting the elimination of several candidate modes prior to rate distortion optimization (RDO). Experimental results show that the proposed method provides time reduction up to 39.2% and an average 35.6% with negligible quality loss as compared to the HEVC reference implementation HM 15.0.

In video coding, intra coding plays an important role in both coding efficiency and error resilience. In this paper, a new intra coding method based on video epitomic analysis is proposed. Image epitome suitable for coding is extracted through video epitomic analysis, and is used to generate the prediction for each block. The mapping between the original image and image epitome as well as image epitome should be coded and transmitted to the decoder side. Due to the independence of adjacent reconstructed blocks, the proposed intra coding method can also be applied to improve error resilience of intra refresh. Experimental results show that, the proposed intra coding method can significantly improve the performance of intra coding by 0.7dB in terms of PSNR. The simulation results under packet loss environment show that the proposed intra refresh can out-perform random intra refresh (RIR) by up to 1dB, and better subjective quality can also be obtained.

HEVC(high efficiency video coding) achieves much higher coding efficiency compared with previous video coding standards at the cost of significant computational complexity. This paper proposes a fast intra mode decision scheme, where edge orientation and the sum of absolute Hadamard transformed difference (SATD) are used to consider texture characteristics of blocks. According to these features, the numbers of candidate modes to be tested in rough mode decision and rate -distortion optimization processes are reduced, respectively. In particular, the rate -distortion optimization candidates are selected by Bayesian classification framework to minimize a risk such as coding loss and computation complexity. Experimental results reveal that the proposed scheme reduces encoding run time by 30.3% with a negligible coding loss of 0.9% BD-rate for the all intra coding scenario.

We introduce an optimal approach for minimizing the computational complexity of HEVC intra encoding subject to constraints in bitrate and reconstruction quality. Our constraint-optimization approach provides an extension to the use of bit constrained rate-distortion optimization so as to minimize encoding time while also delivering sufficient video quality. For our approach, we adaptively control the quantization parameter (QP) and a quad-tree-depth oriented coding tree unit configuration to deliver performance that is optimal in the complexity-rate-quality performance space. Our proposed approach employs a spatially adaptive model that uses neighboring configurations to estimate optimal values for QP and the coding tree unit configuration. We tested our approach using an HEVC standard test video and the ability to dynamically reconfigure between low, medium and high profiles. We found that we can meet the constraints (at 93% (low), 83% (medium) and 93% (high)), while delivering encoding time savings of 13%, 49% and 40% respectively.

The increasing availability of 3D video systems and applications has attracted more consumers for 3D viewing experiences and, consequently, the demand for storage and transmission of 3D video content is growing. An interesting alternative for this need is the transmission of 3D video based on the Multiview Video plus Depth (MVD) format. The upcoming 3D High Efficiency Video coding (3D-HEVC) standard will adopt this format, which associates a depth map to each texture frame. This paper presents a fast mode decision algorithm, which analyses the texture frames and depth maps to detect the edge orientation of the prediction units (PUs), optimizing the intra prediction process and reducing the 3D-HEVC computational complexity. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm achieves an average processing time reduction of 26.2%, with a small degradation in encoding efficiency (BD-rate increase of 0.3% on average).

A new intra-frame coding method based on H.264/AVC is proposed. In the proposed method, every other pixel is sampled either in a horizontal or vertical direction without any anti-aliasing filtering, and two subframes of the even-pixel and odd-pixel are then generated. The even-pixel subframe is coded as a conventional intra frame whereas the other is coded by utilizing the reconstructed information of the even-pixel subframe. The experimental results show that our proposed scheme outperforms the conventional intra-frame coding in H.264/AVC and reduces the bit rate by 11.67% on average at the baseline profile, and by 4.53% at the high profile of H.264/AVC.
