Correspondence Map-Aided Neighbor Embedding for Image intra Prediction

This paper describes new image prediction methods based on neighbor embedding (NE) techniques. Neighbor embedding methods are used here to approximate an input block (the block to be predicted) in the image as a linear combination of K nearest neighbors. However, in order for the decoder to proceed similarly, the K nearest neighbors are found by computing distances between the known pixels in a causal neighborhood (called template) of the input block and the co-located pixels in candidate patches taken from a causal window. Similarly, the weights used for the linear approximation are computed in order to best approximate the template pixels. Although efficient, these methods suffer from limitations when the template and the block to be predicted are not correlated, e. g., in non homogenous texture areas. To cope with these limitations, this paper introduces new image prediction methods based on NE techniques in which the K-NN search is done in two steps and aided, at the decoder, by a block correspondence map, hence the name map-aided neighbor embedding (MANE) method. Another optimized variant of this approach, called oMANE method, is also studied. In these methods, several alternatives have also been proposed for the K-NN search. The resulting prediction methods are shown to bring significant rate-distortion performance improvements when compared to H.264 intra prediction modes (up to 44.75% rate saving at low bit rates).

This paper introduces a new intra prediction algorithm that exploits the correlations between the color channels, for the H.264/AVC intra coding. The main idea is to use the weighted sum of neighboring pixels as a new chroma prediction tool, where the weighting coefficients are determined considering the inter-channel correlations. Specifically the weighting coefficients are determined under the assumption that the similarity of a chrominance channel intensity increases as the distance of the luminance channel intensity decreases. The proposed method is added to the conventional chroma prediction modes with a little modification in the chroma prediction mode binarization. The experiments show that the proposed method provides up to 1.0dB gain for the color-abundant images.

The next-generation High Efficiency Video coding (HEVC) standard aims at providing double compression compared to the state-of-the-art H.264/AVC standard. However, this improved compression efficiency accompanies high computational complexity, which is primarily due to the recursive nature of the coding Tree Unit structure and complex Rate-Distortion (RD) Optimization of Prediction Units (PU). In this paper, we propose a content-driven adaptive complexity reduction scheme that employs an a priori PU size selection algorithm. We adaptively combine smaller PUs into larger PUs depending upon the video frame contents under consideration. Our scheme eliminates the need for recursive or iterative RD cost comparisons to select the best PU size for an HEVC intra encoder. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme provides significant time savings (on average 43.74 %) for HEVC intra encoding, while incurring an insignificant video quality loss (on average -0.048 dB BD-PSNR).

Incorporating sample-based prediction during lossless coding can significantly improve coding performance. However, its use within a codec designed for lossy coding requires a modification of the available prediction scheme. When implementing the codec, two different prediction processes will have to be implemented. This paper describes a lossless coding scheme that delays the sample-based prediction till the residue coding stage of the codec and carries out prediction in the residual domain In this way, the prediction scheme of the lossy coder can be retained while realizing the coding gains associated with sample-based prediction. The proposed scheme improves lossless intra coding performance in HEVC Main Profile by an average of 6.5%.

In intraframe coding of the High Efficiency Video coding (HEVC) standard, up to 3 5 modes are defined for intra prediction and the quadtree structure is used for adaptive block partition. While such flexibility leads to more efficient compression, it also dramatically increases the encoder complexity. In this paper, a simple yet effective fast bottom-up pruning algorithm is proposed to reduce the computational cost. Mode decision at a large coding unit (CU) is selectively skipped based on the block structures of its sub-CUs. Our experimental results show that the proposed scheme can effectively reduce the encoder complexity without compromising the compression efficiency.

The new High Efficiency Video coding (HEVC) standard is achieving higher encoding efficiency when compared to its predecessors such as H.264/AVC. One of the factors responsible to this improvement is the intra prediction method, which introduces a larger number of prediction directions resulting in an enhanced rate-distortion (RD) performance at the cost of a higher computational complexity. This paper proposes an algorithm to accelerate the intra mode decision, reducing the complexity of intra coding. The acceleration procedure takes into account the edge direction information and explores the correlation of intra modes across levels of the HEVC hierarchical tree structure. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm provides a decrease of up to 40.82% in the HEVC intra prediction processing time, with a small degradation in encoding efficiency (BD-PSNR loss of 0.1 dB on average).

In High Efficiency Video coding, the Residual Quad-Yree （RQT） coding is used to encode the prediction residual for both intra and inter coding Units （CU） and provides improved coding gains. However, this results in much higher computational complexities. To address this problem, we develop two fast RQT algorithms for intra- and inter-prediction residual coding respectively. For intra coding, the proposed algorithm selects the best prediction mode in the rate distortion mode decision process using a Prediction Unit （PU） size-dependent fast RQT depth decision on a reduced prediction mode candidates set from the rough mode decision process. For inter coding, in addition to CU size-dependent fast RQT depth decisions, we propose a discriminant analy- sis-based fast depth decision algorithm to det- ermine the best transform unit size. Experimental results show that on average, we can real- ise a 21.29% encoding time saving and 0.03% bit-rate reduction for intra coding, while 15% of the encoding time can be saved with a negligible coding performance loss for inter coding.

Modified rate distortion optimization using inter-block dependence for H.264/AVC intra coding

H.264/AVC allows several prediction schemes including variable modes for intra and inter predictions. To take full advantage of all allowed modes, H.264 employs rate distortion optimization (RDO) as its mode decision method. However, RDO incorporated into the H.264 encoder assumes block independence because calculating rate distortion (RD) cost for all possible mode sets requires a huge number of computations. In contrast to this assumption, coding efficiency of intra prediction in the H.264 encoder is affected by reference pixels in neighboring blocks. Thus, RDO in the H.264 encoder has potential to improve coding performance by considering the accuracy of intra prediction for the next blocks during the mode decision process of the current block. In this paper, we propose new criteria 14x4 mode decision and by using this criteria, the proposed method considers more mode sets to improve RD performance compared to the original RDO. Although the proposed method requires more computations compared to the original RDO, experimental results indicate that the proposed method noticeably improves coding efficiency compared to the original RDO.(1).

In a decade where the prominence of video applications has become increasingly prevalent, the optimization of video coding processes remains as important as ever. The directional intra prediction has been proved as an effective tool for intra picture coding. However, in a directional intra prediction based coding structure, there is a considerable gap between the transform efficiency of DCT and the optimal transform KLT. In this paper, we analyze these problems and propose a pixel-wise directional intra prediction (PDIP) method to solve this problem. This method exploits the reconstruction value of the adjacent pixels to predict the current pixel, and keeps the block-based lossy coding structure of H.264/AVC. The proposed method can significantly improve the coding efficiency with little decoding complexity increment. (c) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
