Efficient intra prediction is an important aspect of video coding with high compression efficiency. H.264/AVC applies directional prediction from neighboring pixels on an adjustable block size for local decorrelation. In this paper, we present an extended prediction scheme in the context of H.264/AVC that comprises two additional prediction methods exploiting self-similar properties of the encoded texture. A new macroblock type is implemented, allowing for flexible selection of the available prediction methods for sub-partitions of the macroblock. Depending on the content of the encoded video sequence, substantial gains in rate-distortion performance are achieved. The results may indicate directions towards an enhanced intra coding scheme with improved rate-distortion performance.

A new adaptive single pixel based lossless intra coding technique employs pixel based DPCM(Differential Pulse Code Modulation) is presented as ail enhancement of H.264/MPEG-4 AVC(Advanced Video coding) standard.. In this paper, we have addressed a technique to trace a single signifficant pixel in the source block adoptively based on perceptual considerations, applied pixel wise DPCM for spatial prediction for residual transform coding. However, the block style of H.264/AVC is not troubled for the transform encoding and decoding process. Front the experiments, it follows that the new adaptive single pixel based lossless intra coding technique offers a better image quality and good compression ratio as compared with the current standard. If the visual significance of source block is considered for spatial prediction, it offers better results. In this paper, we highlight the exclusion of excess visual data present in both Luma and Chromo components of a video frame for lossless intra coding of H.264/AVC.

Spatially scalable video coding with an efficient two-layered architecture

In this paper, an efficient spatially scalable video coding scheme with a two-layered architecture is proposed. In this architecture, two spatial layers are referred to as a base layer and an enhancement layer. The base layer is coded to be compatible to H.264 standard, and when coding the enhancement layer, a new inter layer intra coding method (ILICM) is used to improve the coding efficiency. ILICM intends to use a few specific pixels in the up-sampled and decoded base layer block to predict the corresponding block in enhancement layer, when those original predictors are not available. Besides, in order to interpolate the base layer data, a graceful component-based up-sampling method (CUSM) is also introduced in this paper. Based on the human vision system, CUSM assigns a much simpler up-sampling filter for the chroma component due to its lower sensitivity for human eyes. Generally, proposed schemes including ILICM and CUSM are expected to increase the coding performance of enhancement layer and reduce the computing complexity of the decoder, respectively. Experimental results show that, the PSNR values of luma component of encoded frames are increased with no additional cost on coded bit-rate for ILICM method, while CUSM method can also maintain the coding performance under the theoretically significant reduction of computational complexity.

A new intra-frame coding scheme is proposed for progressive video sequences in H.264/AVC. In the proposed method, every other pixel is sampled either in a horizontal or vertical direction without any anti-aliasing filtering, and two sub-frames of the even-pixel and odd-pixel are then generated. The even-pixel and odd-pixel sub-frames are coded by the intra- and inter-frame coding methods, respectively. Our proposed method can be expanded into a multi-level case in which the even-pixel sub-frame is again subdivided into an even-pixel sub-frame and an odd-pixel sub-frame, and so on to further improve the coding efficiency. The experimental results show that our proposed method reduces the bitrate by approximately 8.25% more than the conventional intra-frame coding in H.264/AVC.

Motion compensated frame interpolation (MCFI) is one of the most efficient solutions to generate side information (SI) in the context of distributed video coding. However, it creates SI with rather significant motion compensated errors for some frame regions while rather small for some other regions depending on the video content. In this paper, a low complexity Infra mode selection algorithm is proposed to select the most 'critical' blocks in the WZ frame and help the decoder with some reliable data for those blocks. For each block, the novel coding mode selection algorithm estimates the encoding rate for the intra based and WZ coding modes and determines the best coding mode while maintaining a low encoder complexity. The proposed solution is evaluated in terms of rate-distortion performance with improvements up to 1.2 dB regarding a WZ coding mode only solution.

In this paper, we propose a new intra prediction scheme based on hard thresholding applied on shift-DCT coefficients. The explored intra prediction method, validated in an H.264/AVC framework, aims at better predicting complex 2D patterns that cannot be properly extrapolated using H.264/AVC directional intra prediction modes. The basic explored algorithm makes use of neighbor pixels of the current block to predict the current signal using a shift-DCT based extrapolation. Different versions of the algorithm, corresponding to different hard thresholding parameter derivation processes, are described. Experimental results show that the proposed intra coding prediction method can significantly improve the coding efficiency compared to the directional predictive modes of H.264/AVC, with an average BD-rate gain of 6.2% observed on a various pictures test set.

A new lossless intra coding method based on sample-by-sample differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) is presented as an enhancement of the H.264[MPEG-4 AVC standard. The H.264/AVC design includes a multidirectional spatial prediction method to reduce spatial redundancy by using neighboring samples as a prediction for the samples in a block of data to be encoded. In the new lossless;intra coding method, the spatial prediction is performed based on samplewise DPCM instead of in the block-based manner used in the current H.264/AVC standard, while the block structure is retained for the residual difference entropy coding process. We show that the new method, based on samplewise DPCM, does not have a major complexity penalty, despite its apparent pipeline dependencies. Experiments show that the new lossless intra coding method reduces the bit rate by approximately 12% in comparison with the lossless;intra coding method previously included in the H.264/AVC standard. As a result, the new method is currently being adopted into the H.264/AVC standard in a new enhancement project.

In this letter an adaptive scanning that improves intra coding efficiency in the H.264/AVC standard is proposed The proposed adaptive scanning utilizes the prediction directions (modes) that include the horizontal and vertical edge information in a block Depending on the prediction directions, the proposed method uses three scanning methods: zigzag scanning, horizontal scanning, and vertical scanning. In the proposed method, horizontal and vertical scanning are used in vertical and horizontal prediction modes, respectively, and the normal zigzag scanning in the H.264 standard is used in all other intra prediction modes. The proposed method reduces the bit rate by approximately 2.5% compared with H.264/AVC, without the degradation of video quality.

The lossy video coding is a key technology to compress the video to become very low bit rate data and H.264/AVC standard performs very well in lossy coding. However, the lossless image and video coding still plays an important role, especially in medical applications. Hence, the lossless coding in use of H.264/AVC gains a lot of attentions. In this paper, we introduce simplified interpolations to replace the sample-by-sample DPCM concept, which uses the nearer pixel as the prediction for certain modes to achieve better coding efficiency. The proposed predictions are applied to all intra prediction modes suggested in H.264/AVC. Moreover, the luma/chroma dc blocks reduction can also reduce the syntax elements for entropy coding. With these proposed algorithms, the compression performance of the H.264/AVC lossless intra coding is greatly improved.

Adaptive Scanning Based on a Morphological Representation of Coefficients for H.264/AVC

In this letter an effective scanning method based on a morphological representation of quantized coefficients is proposed for intra coding in H.264. In the proposed scanning method the scan order for each block is adaptively reconfigured by exploiting a residual correlation beyond the border of the block An initial scan order for the current block is determined first by using the pattern of nonzero coefficients in the adjacent block Then, a complete scan order is obtained by performing the dilation operation at each position within the initial scan order Experimental results show that the proposed method improves the coding efficiency up to 3.7% compared to the conventional zigzag scanning method.
