Efficient intra prediction is an important aspect of video coding with high compression efficiency. H.264/AVC applies directional prediction from neighboring pixels on an adjustable block size for local decorrelation. In this paper, we present an extended prediction scheme in the context of H.264/AVC that comprises two additional prediction methods exploiting self-similar properties of the encoded texture. A new macroblock type is implemented, allowing for flexible selection of the available prediction methods for sub-partitions of the macroblock. Depending on the content of the encoded video sequence, substantial gains in rate-distortion performance are achieved. The results may indicate directions towards an enhanced intra coding scheme with improved rate-distortion performance.

A new adaptive single pixel based lossless intra coding technique employs pixel based DPCM(Differential Pulse Code Modulation) is presented as ail enhancement of H.264/MPEG-4 AVC(Advanced Video coding) standard.. In this paper, we have addressed a technique to trace a single signifficant pixel in the source block adoptively based on perceptual considerations, applied pixel wise DPCM for spatial prediction for residual transform coding. However, the block style of H.264/AVC is not troubled for the transform encoding and decoding process. Front the experiments, it follows that the new adaptive single pixel based lossless intra coding technique offers a better image quality and good compression ratio as compared with the current standard. If the visual significance of source block is considered for spatial prediction, it offers better results. In this paper, we highlight the exclusion of excess visual data present in both Luma and Chromo components of a video frame for lossless intra coding of H.264/AVC.

The quad-tree based CU partition scheme is one of the new methods proposed in HEVC to achieve higher encoding efficiency at a cost of high computational complexity. In this paper, we proposed a fast coding unit (CU) size decision algorithm for HEVC intra coding. In our method, the complexity of the current CU and its neighbors are firstly analyzed. Since the neighboring CU usually has similar textures, it is possible to employ the complexity of the neighboring CU as a threshold to skip some useless CU size for the current CU partitioning. Experimental results show that our proposed method can speed up original HEVC intra coding by averagely 23.667% with a negligible drop in encoding performance for different video sequences.

In the previous work, M-channel filter bank systems (MCFBS) were proposed to overcome the mismatch between the fixed transform matrix and variable transform block sizes in H.264/AVC intra coding. However, the constructed filter banks for MCFBS are with irrational coefficients, which bring great obstacles to implement integer transform. In this work, a new class of M-channel filter banks is firstly constructed and then several integer M-channel filter banks (IMFB) derived from this class are proposed for MCFBS. Experimental results show that IMFB can save about 61% of encoding time per frame, with nearly negligible loss of peak signal-to-noise (PSNR) value.

HEVC (High Efficiency Video coding) is an ongoing standardization target as the next generation of video compression technology. HEVC employs a coding tree block, which is a quad-tree structure of a coding unit. It also employs some unit types;coding unit, prediction unit, and transform unit. A coding unit can be divided into smaller units as prediction units. Though an asymmetric unit is used for inter coding, only symmetric units are permitted for intra coding. In this paper, we propose an asymmetric partitioning with a non-power-of-two transform as a prediction and transform unit. While conventional partitioning locates the cross-point of partitioning lines at the center of the coding unit, the proposed method locates the cross-point in places except center. The proposed method reduces 2.0% BD-bitrate compared with HM5.0 under all intra / high efficiency condition. The validity of the proposed method is confirmed by some experimental results.

Three dimensional (3D) video technology, systems and applications such as 3D television and freeviewpoint television (FTV) broadcasts require efficient encoding of video information. To fill that need a 3D video extension of High Efficiency Video coding standard, called 3D-HEVC, is being developed. This extension is based on Multiview Video plus Depth (MVD) format, which associates a depth information to each texture frame of each view. This paper presents a method to accelerate the intra coding of these depth maps to reduce the 3D-HEVC computational complexity. The proposed algorithm exploits the edge orientation of the depth blocks to reduce the number of modes to be evaluated in the intra mode decision. In addition, the correlation between the Planar mode choice and the most probable modes (MPMs) selected is also exploited, to accelerate the depth intra coding. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm achieves an average complexity reduction of 15% on depth information encoding, with a small degradation in encoding efficiency (BD-rate increase of 0.16% on average).

High Efficiency Video coding (HEVC) is the newest standard of video coding being developed by JCT-VC. It flexibly uses quad-tree structure, which makes the encoding procedure more complex and time-consuming compared with H.264/AVC. For intra prediction, determining the optimal distribution of coding unit (CU)size requires huge computing time. In this paper, we propose a new fast CU size selection algorithm based on image texture for HEVC intra coding. Some CU sizes can be adaptively skipped due to the characteristic of input image texture. Moreover, the proposed algorithm innovatively adopts the grey level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) to measure image texture to select CU size. Experimental result shows that this algorithm performs about 26.08% time saving with negligible loss of encoding efficiency.

Recently, Joint Video Experts Team (JVET) has completed the new Versatile Video coding (H.266/VVC) standard. VVC employs a new block partition structure named quad-tree with nested multi-type tree (QTMT) to improve coding efficiency. However, the new block partition structure increases huge encoding time compared with HEVC for brute-force rate-distortion (RD) optimization. To reduce encoding complexity, we propose a Support Vector Machine (SVM) based fast CU partitioning algorithm for VVC intra coding in this paper which terminates redundant partitions early by predicting the partition of CU using texture information. We trained classifiers for CUs of different sizes to improve accuracy and control the complexity of the classifiers themselves. Different thresholds are set for each classifier to achieve a trade-off between encoding complexity and RD performance. Experimental results show that the proposed method can save encoder time ranging from 30.78% to 63.16% with 1.10% to 2.71% BD-BR increase.

In this paper, a multiple direct mode (MDM) method is presented for chroma intra coding. The main contributions of the proposed MDM method include two aspects: selection of multiple luma intra prediction modes from co-located luma blocks, and the derivation of chroma intra prediction modes from spatial neighbouring blocks. With the proposed method, both the cross-component correlation and spatial correlation of intra prediction modes can be better utilized for more efficient chroma intra coding. Simulation results have validated the efficiency of MDM especially under the decoupled luma-chroma partition trees. The proposed method has been adopted in the Joint Exploration Model (JEM) which is the test platform for future video coding technology exploration in Joint Video Exploration Team (JVET).

High Efficiency Video coding (HEVC), the latest video coding standard, achieves significantly better compression performance than the previous coding standards, especially for high resolution (2K, 4K, etc.) video coding. intra frame coding adopts a flexible quad-tree coding block structure to get the best coding unit partition, which results in extremely high computational complexity. In this paper, a fast depth decision algorithm with enlarged block sizes is proposed to speed up HEVC intra coding for 4K Ultra-HD video. Firstly, sizes of coding Unit (CU), Prediction Unit (PU) and Transform Unit (TU) are enlarged in the modified coding Tree Unit structure to reduce coding complexity. Then, gradient information of an image is exploited for early CU termination to optimize CU partition process. Experimental results of several 4K video sequences show that the proposed algorithm can achieve about 56% encoding time reduction compared to HEVC reference software while maintaining the same encoding performance.
