The number of intra prediction modes in High Efficiency Video coding (HEVC) has been increased up to 35. To the end of alleviating the complexity of intra coding, we bring in the convolution neural network (CNN) to obtain the candidate modes of current PU and adopt the corner detection algorithm to further reduce the candidate modes. The virtues of proposed algorithm include: Firstly, our algorithm skip the rough PU mode decision (RMD) process and get the candidate list from CNN directly. In other words, the computations are relaxed in our algorithm. Secondly, the inputs of CNN in proposed algorithm merely contain the source image pixels and quantization parameter (QP), this feature makes it friendly to high parallel hardwired encoder. As compared with HM-15.0, experiments show that our algorithm decreases the intra coding time by 27.92% while the corresponding BDBR augment is 1.15%. At last but not least, our algorithm possesses a stable coding performance. In specific, for the most sensitive sequence (Class F), our algorithm could save 27.10% intra coding time with 2.01% BDBR increase.

A flexible side information generation framework for distributed video coding

One of the most efficient approaches to generate the side information (SI) in distributed video codecs is through motion compensated frame interpolation where the current frame is estimated based on past and future reference frames. However, this approach leads to significant spatial and temporal variations in the correlation noise between the source at the encoder and the SI at the decoder. In such scenario, it would be useful to design an architecture where the SI can be more robustly generated at the block level, avoiding the creation of SI frame regions with lower correlation, largely responsible for some coding efficiency losses. In this paper, a flexible framework to generate SI at the block level in two modes is presented: while the first mode corresponds to a motion compensated interpolation (MCI) technique, the second mode corresponds to a motion compensated quality enhancement (MCQE) technique where a low quality intra block sent by the encoder is used to generate the SI by doing motion estimation with the help of the reference frames. The novel MCQE mode can be overall advantageous from the rate-distortion point of view, even if some rate has to be invested in the low quality intra coding blocks, for blocks where the MCI produces SI with lower correlation. The overall solution is evaluated in terms of RD performance with improvements up to 2 dB, especially for high motion video sequences and long Group of Pictures (GOP) sizes.

Distributed Video coding (DVC) is a new compression paradigm in video coding, which is receiving lots of interests nowadays. Side information creation is a key function in the DVC decoder, and plays a key-role in determining the performance of the codec. This paper proposes a novel framework to create side information at the block level with two modes: Wyner-Ziv mode and intra/ WZ mode, corresponding to Motion Compensated Frame Interpolation and motion compensated quality enhancement technique, respectively. While in the second mode, a low quality intra block sent by the encoder is used to generate side information by doing motion estimation with the help of the reference frames. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can achieve up to 2.1dB improvement in rate-distortion performance when compared to state-of-the-art DVC codec, especially for high motion video sequences and long group of pictures sizes.
