In our previous work, it was shown that the conventional approximate Bayes' theorem based probabilistic data association (PDA) algorithms output "nominal APPs", which are unsuitable for the classic architecture of iterative detection and decoding (IDD) aided receivers. To circumvent this predicament, in this paper we propose an exact Bayes' theorem based logarithmic domain PDA (EB-Log-PDA) method, whose output has similar characteristics to the true APPs, and hence it is readily applicable to the classic IDD architecture of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems using M-ary modulation. Furthermore, we demonstrate that introducing inner iterations into EB-Log-PDA, which is common practice in conventional-PDA aided uncoded MIMO systems, would actually degrade the IDD receiver's performance, despite significantly increasing the overall computational complexity of the IDD receiver. Finally, we show that the EB-Log-PDA based IDD scheme operating without any inner PDA iterations has a similar performance to that of the optimal maximum a posteriori (MAP) detector based IDD receiver, while imposing a significantly lower computational complexity in the scenarios considered.

Bayesian iterative Demodulation and decoding for LoRa Modulation in Fast Rayleigh Fading Channels

This paper designs Bayesian iterative detection and decoding (IDD) schemes incorporating a blind channel estimator in the physical layer of long-range wide-area network (LoRaWAN). The Bayesian IDD exchanges log-likelihood ratios (LLRs) as soft decision values between the LoRa demodulator and Hamming decoder to enhance the signal detection capability while obtaining the iterative gain. The data rate of LoRa is notably slow, consequently resulting in prolonged frame transmission times. In time-varying fast Rayleigh fading channels, the channel during the prolonged time experiences significant fluctuations due to the Doppler effect. Typical LoRa modulation uses non-coherent demodulation without channel estimation to overcome the Doppler problem, at the expense of detection accuracy. This paper investigates LLR for coherent demodulation, supported by an iterative blind channel estimator for tracking the time-varying channel states, in order to maximize the iterative gain in the IDD process. Finally, computer simulation results explicitly demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed Bayesian IDD in terms of bit error rate (BER) performance.

New detection algorithms based on the jointly Gaussian approach and successive interference cancelation for iterative MIMO systems

A new detection algorithm based on the jointly Gaussian approach (JGA) and successive interference cancelation (SIC), named the SIC-JGA algorithm, is proposed for iterative MIMO systems. Both the a priori symbol estimates of the undetected layers and the a posteriori symbol estimates of the previously detected layers are used in the SIC process. To reduce the complexity of covariance matrix inversion in the proposed algorithm, simplified algorithms named S-SIC-JGA are investigated for both the single path and multipath block fading channels under M Phase Shift Keying modulations. A detailed complexity analysis is presented for both the SIC-JGA and S-SIC-JGA algorithms. Numerical results exhibit that the system using the SIC-JGA algorithm outperforms the JGA algorithm, with an additional complexity for determining the detection order of SIC. The S-SIC-JGA algorithm has a much lower complexity compared with the SIC-JGA algorithm while experiencing an acceptable system performance degradation. Proper detection algorithms can be chosen in different iterations to balance the system performance and the detection complexity. Copyright (C) 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Design of Turbo-MUD Receivers for overloaded CDMA systems by density evolution technique

This paper deals with a Turbo Multiuser Detector suitable for applications in Overloaded Coded DS-CDMA systems. The Turbo-MUD receiver is based on the use of a linear MMSE detector in the first iteration and a Parallel Interference Cancellation scheme in the successive ones. The inputs of the interference cancellator are both the detector outputs and the soft information from a bank of turbo decoders. The performance of the proposed receiver has been derived by means of computer, simulations and applications of the Density Evolution theory: in particular, this technique permits to properly evaluate the number of MMSE iterations, simplifying the overall receiver design.

Joint parameter estimation and decoding in a distributed receiver

This paper presents an algorithm for iterative joint channel parameter (carrier phase, Doppler shift, and Doppler rate) estimation and decoding of transmission over channels affected by Doppler shift and Doppler rate using a distributed receiver. This algorithm is derived by applying the sum-product algorithm (SPA) to a factor graph representing the joint a posteriori distribution of the information symbols and channel parameters given the channel output. In this paper, we present two methods for dealing with intractable messages of the SPA. In the first approach, we use particle filtering with sequential importance sampling for the estimation of the unknown parameters. We also propose a method for fine-tuning of particles for improved convergence. In the second approach, we approximate our model with a random walk phase model, followed by a phase tracking algorithm and polynomial regression algorithm to estimate the unknown parameters. We derive the Weighted Bayesian Cramer-Rao Bounds for joint carrier phase, Doppler shift, and Doppler rate estimation, which take into account the prior distribution of the estimation parameters and are accurate lower bounds for all considered signal-to-noise ratio values. Numerical results (of bit error rate and the mean-square error of parameter estimation) suggest that phase tracking with the random walk model slightly outperforms particle filtering. However, particle filtering has a lower computational cost than the random walk model-based method.

A Novel Graph-Based Suboptimal Multiuser Detector for FDM-CPM Transmissions

We consider a frequency division multiplexed (FDM) system where each user employs a continuous phase modulation (CPM), serially concatenated with an outer code through an interleaver, and iterative detection/decoding. In such a system, the spectral efficiency can be increased by reducing the spacing between two adjacent channels, thus increasing the relevant interference. Hence, we address the design of low-complexity suboptimal multiuser detectors able to effectively cope with such an interference. We extend some well known multiuser detection algorithms proposed for code division multiple access (CDMA) systems. Moreover, we introduce a new detection scheme using the framework based on factor graphs (FGs) and the sum-product algorithm (SPA). The simulation results show that the described algorithms allow to effectively reduce the spacing, thus increasing the spectral efficiency, and in particular, the proposed detection scheme results to be the most effective one in terms of performance and computational complexity.

Evaluation of MMSE-Based iterative Soft detection Schemes for Coded Massive MIMO System

There have been a number of researches on soft iterative detection and decoding scheme for coded multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Minimum mean square error (MMSE)-based detection schemes were often considered for massive MIMO systems, due to their reasonable complexity and performance tradeoff. This paper evaluates a number of MMSE-based soft iterative detection schemes for massive MIMO systems, with new proposals to improve the performances and to reduce the complexity. We consider joint iterative detection and decoding schemes for a coded massive MIMO system, and various kinds of MMSE-based soft detection methods proposed in the literatures are investigated. By utilizing the diagonal approximation of the channel matrix, we propose efficient soft MMSE filtering methods in combination with soft interference cancelation techniques and a compact soft bit estimation method. In addition, new matrix inversion-less soft MMSE methods are proposed for joint iterative detections. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed methods clearly contribute to the reduction of the complexity of the conventional methods, and performance enhancement.

On pilot-symbol-assisted carrier synchronization for DVB-S2 systems

We consider the problem of carrier synchronization in future 2nd-generation satellite digital video broadcasting (DVB-S2) receivers. In this scenario, this task is made harder by the complexity constraints, related to the use of consumer-grade equipment. Making use of the distributed pilot symbols of the DVB-S2 standard, low-complexity techniques for fine frequency estimation and for detection in the presence of a strong phase noise, typical of consumer-grade equipment, will be proposed. The performance of the described algorithms will be analysed in detail through computer simulations.

Improved iterative parallel interference cancellation receiver for future wireless DS-CDMA systems

We present a new turbo multiuser detector for turbo-coded direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems. The proposed detector is based on the utilization of a parallel interference cancellation (PIC) and a bank of turbo decoders. The PIC is broken up in order to perform interference cancellation after each constituent decoder of the turbo decoding scheme. Moreover, in the paper we propose a new enhanced algorithm that provides a more accurate estimation of the signal-to-noise-plus -interference-ratio used in the tentative decision device and in the MAP decoding algorithm. The performance of the proposed receiver is evaluated by means of computer simulations for medium to very high system loads, in AWGN and multipath fading channel, and compared to recently proposed interference-cancellation-based iterative MUD, by taking into account the number of iterations and the complexity involved. We will see that the proposed receiver outperforms the others especially for highly loaded systems.

Low-Complexity SIC-MMSE for Joint Multiple-input Multiple-output detection

iterative detection and decoding based on a soft interference cancellation-minimum mean squared error (SIC-MMSE) scheme provides efficient performance for coded MIMO systems. The critical computational burden for a SIC-MMSE detector in a MIMO system lies in the multiple inverse operations of the complex matrix. In this paper, we present a new method to reduce the complexity of the SIC-MMSE scheme based on a MIMO detection scheme that uses a single universal matrix with a non-layer-dependent inversion process. We apply the Taylor series expansion approach and derive a simple non-layer-dependent inverse matrix. The simulation results reveal that the utilization of the universal matrices presented in this paper produces almost the same performance as the conventional SIC-MMSE scheme but with low computational complexity.
