Sprint2Vec: A Deep Characterization of Sprints in iterative software development

iterative approaches like Agile Scrum are commonly adopted to enhance the software development process. However, challenges such as schedule and budget overruns still persist in many software projects. Several approaches employ machine learning techniques, particularly classification, to facilitate decision-making in iterative software development. Existing approaches often concentrate on characterizing a sprint to predict solely productivity. We introduce Sprint2Vec, which leverages three aspects of sprint information - sprint attributes, issue attributes, and the developers involved in a sprint, to comprehensively characterize it for predicting both productivity and quality outcomes of the sprints. Our approach combines traditional feature extraction techniques with automated deep learning-based unsupervised feature learning techniques. We utilize methods like Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) to enhance our feature learning process. This enables us to learn features from unstructured data, such as textual descriptions of issues and sequences of developer activities. We conducted an evaluation of our approach on two regression tasks: predicting the deliverability (i.e., the amount of work delivered from a sprint) and quality of a sprint (i.e., the amount of delivered work that requires rework). The evaluation results on five well-known open-source projects (Apache, Atlassian, Jenkins, Spring, and Talendforge) demonstrate our approach's superior performance compared to baseline and alternative approaches.

iterative software development has become widely practiced in industry. Since modern software projects require fast, incremental delivery for every iteration of software development, it is essential to monitor the execution of an iteration, and foresee a capability to deliver quality products as the iteration progresses. This paper presents a novel, data-driven approach to providing automated support for project managers and other decision makers in predicting delivery capability for an ongoing iteration. Our approach leverages a history of project iterations and associated issues, and in particular, we extract characteristics of previous iterations and their issues in the form of features. In addition, our approach characterizes an iteration using a novel combination of techniques including feature aggregation statistics, automatic feature learning using the Bag-of-Words approach, and graph-based complexity measures. An extensive evaluation of the technique on five large open source projects demonstrates that our predictive models outperform three common baseline methods in Normalized Mean Absolute Error and are highly accurate in predicting the outcome of an ongoing iteration.

Organizing knowledge workers for specific tasks in a software development process is critical for the success of software projects. Assigning workforce in software projects represents a dynamic and complex problem that concerns the utilization of cross-trained knowledge workers who possess different productivities and error tendencies in coding and defect correction. This complexity is further compounded when the development process follows a software release life cycle and involves major releases of alpha, beta, and final versions in the context of iterative software development. We study this knowledge workforce problem from three essential project management perspectives: (1) timeliness obtaining shortest development time;(2) effectiveness - satisfying budget constraint;and (3) efficiency achieving high workforce utilization. We explore ideal workforce composites with two strategic focuses on productivity and quality and with different scenarios of workload ratios. An analytical model is formulated and a meta-heuristic approach based on particle swarm optimization is used to derive solutions in a simulation experiment. Our findings suggest that forming an ideal workforce composite is a non-trivial task and task assignments with divergent focuses for software projects under different workload scenarios require different planning strategies. Practical implications are drawn from our findings to provide insight on effectively planning workforce for software projects with specific goals and considerations. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Iteration-based software development is a popular and widely used software development approach. Therefore students have to get familiar with it;however it is difficult for them to work iteratively. We designed new courses aimed at software development in a way in which students are forced to use incremental and iterative development instead of the waterfall model. The new project-oriented courses focus on project management (regular planning and reporting) and emphasize students' motivation toward project success.

One of the biggest problems that software organizations encounter is specifying the resources required and the duration of projects. Organizations that record the number of defects and the effort spent on fixing these defects are able to correctly predict the latent defects in the product and the effort required to remove these latent defects. The use of reliability models reported in the literature is typical to achieve this prediction, but the number of studies that report defect prediction models for iterative software development is scarce. In this article we present a case study which predicts the defectiveness of new releases in an iterative, civil project where defect arrival phase data is not recorded. We investigated Linear Regression Model and Rayleigh Model one of the statistical reliability model that contain time information, to predict the module level and project level defectiveness of the new releases of an iterative project through the iterations. The models were created by using 29 successive releases for the project level and 15 successive releases for the module level defect density data. This article explains the procedures that were applied to generate the defectiveness models and the lessons learned from the studies.

A Source Code Change Impact Analysis Algorithm for iterative software development

CHA-AS is a source code change impact analysis algorithm for Java programs. CHA-AS differs from other algorithms in that it does not require the program versions it compares to be whole programs with a well-defined program entry point. The need for such an algorithm is evident in iterative software development projects and projects involving the development of code libraries and frameworks-all of which may not have a well-defined program entry point at the time when change impact analysis needs to be performed. The CHA-AS algorithm supports the development of Decision Support Systems for software development managers and programmers working on iterative software development projects, or projects to develop source code libraries and frameworks. This paper describes the CHA-AS algorithm and demonstrates it to be efficient and effective in calculating source code change impact.

Many software organisations using iterative software development approach use practices that relate to quality management. However, the quality management process has been inadequate. Despite many research studies conducted on quality management in iterative software product development none have adequately addressed the challenges and mitigation techniques to have an adequate process that leads to a quality software product. The objective of this study was to determine factors that affect the quality management process in iterative software development. The research followed a qualitative approach, a case of software organisation SasTech in Cape Town, South Africa. 22 interviews were conducted on three roles actively involved in the software product development process. These are product management, quality assurance and software developers. Themes were drawn from results and were tabulated. The duality of technology theory was used as a theoretical lens to data analysis. Several factors were identified to influence the software quality management process. These include planning, documentation, process ownership, technologies, testing, timelines and management support. Through the general proposed framework, facilities (human resources and technologies), interpretive schemes (architecture) and norms (practices) of software quality management can be institutionalised leading to adequate and effective quality management in iterative development for SasTech as well as other organisations in the same industry.

This paper presents the results of systematically reviewing the current research literature on effort estimation in agile, iterative and incremental software projects (AIISPs). The primary purpose is to show evidences about common trends, gaps and recommendations for future studies. The results were limited to peer-reviewed conference papers/journal articles, written in English and published before 2013. The synthesis was made through classifying the papers based on different properties. The analysis indicates the need for future research on: 1) estimating effort for the remaining AIISPs, 2) analyzing the impact of properties of historical/current project data, 3) using benchmark data, 4) using composite models and 5) further empirical validation of the estimation models.
