An 0.8-mm² 9.6-mW iterative decoder for Faster-Than-Nyquist and Orthogonal Signaling Multicarrier Systems in 65-nm CMOS

This paper presents an iterative decoder for faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) and orthogonal signaling multi-carrier systems. FTN signaling is a method of improving bandwidth efficiency at the expense of higher processing complexity in the transceiver. The decoder can switch between orthogonal and FTN signaling modes and exploits channel properties to improve bandwidth efficiency. The decoder is fabricated in a 65-nm CMOS process and occupies a total area of 0.8 mm(2) with decoder core taking up 0.567 mm(2). The power consumption of the chip is 9.6 mW at 1.2 V when clocked at 100 MHz, providing a peak information throughput of 1 Mbps and with an energy efficiency of 0.6 nJ per bit per iteration. To the best of our knowledge, those measurement results are from the first ever silicon implementation of a decoder for FTN signaling.

In this paper we present a new iterative decoder of Space-Time Block Coded data in the presence of carrier offsets. This decoder starts the iteration with a small amount of training data to find the initial estimate of carrier offset, channel and noise co-variance. Subsequently it attempts to find the estimate of the STBC data by an alternating maximization (AM) technique. In this way better estimates of Space-Time data are achieved after the final iteration as compared to those found without an iterative method. Thus the new decoder reduces the training overhead required by the conventional data-aided (DA) estimators for efficient estimates of carrier offsets and S-T data, and provides higher data rate.

Faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) signaling is a method of improving bandwidth efficiency by transmitting information beyond Nyquist's orthogonality limit for interference free transmission. Previously have theoretically established that FTN can provide improved bandwidth efficiency. However, this comes at the cost of higher decoding complexity at the receiver. Our work has evaluated multicarrier FTN signaling for its implementation feasibility and complexity overhead compared to the gains in bandwidth efficiency. The work carried out in this research project includes a systems perspective evaluating performance, algorithm hardware tradeoffs and a hardware architecture leading to a silicon implementation of the decoder for FTN signaling. From the systems perspective, co-existence of FTN and OFDM based multicarrier system has been evaluated. OFDM being a part of many existing and upcoming broadband access technologies such as WLAN, LTE, DVB, this analogy is motivated. On the hardware aspect, the proposed architecture can accommodate both OFDM and FTN systems. The processing blocks in transmitter and receiver were designed for reuse and carry out different functions in the transceiver. Furthemore, the hardware could be configured to operate at varying bandwidth efficiencies (by FTN signaling) to exploit the channel conditions. The decoder implementation also considered block sizes and data rates to comply with the 3GPP standard. The decoding is carried out in as few as 8 iterations making it more practical for implementation in power constrained mobile devices. The decoder is implemented in 65nm CMOS process and occupies a total chip area of 0.8mm2.

The inner decoder of the Davey-MacKay (DM) construction for combating insertions, deletions and substitution errors, has high complexity and produces bursts of output likelihoods of greatest uncertainty in the vicinity of insertions and deletions. We therefore propose (i) a lookup-table-based implementation of the inner decoder to reduce its complexity, (ii) the use of interleaved LDPC codes as outer codes in the DM construction to spread the uncertain likelihoods produced by the inner decoder over several constituent LDPC codewords. Simulation results show that the proposed lookup table approach reduces the complexity of the inner decoder considerably while a significant improvement in frame error rate (FER) performance can be obtained with small interleaving depths. Our lookup table approach culminates in an iterative decoding scheme which yields improved FER performance over its non-iterative counterparts, yet with only a modest increase in decoding complexity, when the insertion/deletion probability is small.

An improved iterative decoder (IID) for 3-node decode-and-forward (DF) relay channels employing distributed turbo trellis coded modulation (DTTCM) schemes which takes into account the decoding errors at the relay is proposed. The principle idea is to modify the extrinsic information between the component decoders to eliminate the effect of error propagation between the decoders, depending on the channel conditions between the source, the relay and the destination nodes in terms of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) per bit. The performance of this decoder is compared with the performance of an iterative decoder proposed in the literature which is called normal iterative decoder (NID) in this paper and does not take into account the decoding errors at the relay, by simulation. The comparison shows that the IID outperforms the NID when the source-relay channel is bad with low SNR, thus yielding lots of decoding errors at the relay.

In this letter we analyze the performance of a low-density parity-check iterative decoder which makes use of an additional buffer at its input, whose function is to decrease the overall complexity of the decoding circuit. We propose a semi-analytical technique that permits the evaluation of the optimum buffer length for each analyzed code.

Performance Evaluation of MIMO-OFDM with Twin Turbo decoder

This paper proposes Twin Turbo (T2) MIMO-OFDM (Multiple Input Multiple Output-Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing). The advanced iterative decoder, called the T2 decoder, decreases the transmission error rate compared to conventional turbo decoders because it uses the correlation information among the bits mapped on an identical symbol of multi-level modulation and updates the channel reliability. When T2 is applied to a MIMO-OFDM, the required symbol energy to noise power density ratio (E-s/N-0) can be reduced more effectively than when T2 is applied to SISO (Single Input Single Output). This is because T2 can use the correlation among the bits not only mapped on an identical symbol but also transmitted from different antennas. Moreover, T2 achieves good performance in a correlated MIMO channel because the average minimum squared Euclidean distances between symbol replica candidates consisting of signals transmitted from multiple transmitter antennas are reduced. Computer simulations verify that the required E-s/N-0 of T2 MIMO-OFDM using 16QAM is 1.9 dB lower than that of a conventional turbo decoder when the correlation coefficients of transmitter and receiver antennas are 0.8. A computational complexity analysis clarifies the relation between the increase in computational complexity and the reduction in the required E-s/N-0.

A new serial turbo decoder for robust communication in the presence of impulsive noise is proposed and examined. The new decoder iteratively performs robust maximum a posteriori (MAP) decoding by cascading a nonlinear MAP inner decoder incorporating a non-quadratic penalty function with an MAP outer decoder. Results show that the proposed serial turbo decoder facilitates considerable performance improvement.

Turbo codes are one of the best coding schemes for error correction because of their highest coding gain achievements. Number of iterations totally affects the turbo decoding process;it has an impact on the decoder performance, latency and power consumption. Dealing with battery-based devices requires paying attention to the battery life-time, consumed power, and hence the importance of a power efficient designs. Adapting the number of iterations according to the channel state gives a power efficient design for the decoder as illustrated in this paper. Two Channel Estimators methods are proposed here, the first one depends on the calculation of the Pilot Error Rate (PER) and the other one calculates the Bit Error Rate (BER) over the decoder as an indicator for the channel state. There is a tradeoff between the two methods in the reliability, synchronization and latency.
