Most first year computer science students would find that learning object-oriented programming is hard. Serious games have ever been used as one approach to handle this problem. But most of them cannot be played with mobile devices. This obviously does not suit the era of mobile computing that intends to allow students to learn programming skills in anytime anywhere. To enhance mobile teaching and learning, a research project started over a year ago and aims to create a mobile device based serious gaming approach along with a serious game for enhancing mobile teaching and learning for java programming. So far the project has completed a literature review for understanding existing work and identifying problems in this area, conducted a survey for eliciting students' requirements for mobile gaming approach, and then established a mobile-device based serious gaming approach with a developed prototype of the game. This paper introduces the project, presents its details and discusses its current results. It is expected that the presented project will be helpful and useful to bring more efficient approaches with new mobile games into teaching object-oriented programming and to enhance students' learning experiences.

Witness validation is a formal verification method to independently verify software verification tool results, with two main categories: violation and correctness witness validators. Validalors for violation witnesses in java include Wit41-ava and GWII, but no dedicated correctness witness validators exist. To address this gap, this paper presents the java Correctness-Witness Validator (JCWIT), the first tool to validate correctness witnesses in java programs. JCWIT accepts an original program, a specification, and a correctness witness as inputs. Then, it uses invariants of each witness's execution state as conditions lo he incorporated into the original program in the form of assertions, thus instrumenting it. Next, JCWIT employs an established tool, java Bounded Model Checker (JBMC), to verify the transformed program, hence examining the reproducibility of correct witness results. We evaluated JCWIT in the SV-COMP ReachSafely benchmark, and the results show that JCWIT can correctly validate the correctness witnesses generated by java verifiers.

Automation has been used to assess student programming tasks for over 60 years. As well as assessing work, it can also be used in the provision of feedback, commonly though the utilisation of unit tests or evaluation of program output. This typically requires a structure to be provided, for example provision of a method stub or programming to an interface. This scaffolded approach is required in statically typed, object-oriented languages such as java, as if tests rely on non-existent code, compilation will fail. Previous studies identified that for many tools, feedback is limited to a comparison of the student's solution with a reference, the results of unit tests, or how actual output compares with that which is expected. This paper discusses a tool that provides automated textual feedback on programming tasks. This tool, the "java Object-Oriented Feedback Tool" (JOOFT), allows the instructor to write unit tests for as yet unwritten code, with their own feedback, almost as easily as writing a standard unit test. JOOFT also provides additional, customisable, feedback for student errors that might occur in the process of writing code, such as specifying an incorrect parameter type for a method. A randomised trial of the tool was carried out with novice student programmers (n =109), who completed a lab task on the design of a class, 52 of them having assistance from the tool. Whilst students provided positive feedback on tool usage, performance in a later assessment of class creation, suggests student outcomes are not affected.

Generative AI has considerably altered traditional workplace practice across numerous industries. Ever since the emergence of large language models (LLMs), their potential to generate formative feedback for introductory programming courses has been extensively researched. However, most of these studies have focused on Python. In this work, we examine the bug-fixing and feedback-generation abilities of Code Llama and ChatGPT for java programming assignments using our new java benchmark called CodeWBugs. The results indicate that ChatGPT performs reasonably well, and was able to fix 94.33% programs. By comparison, we observed high variability in the results from Code Llama. We further analyzed the impact of different types of prompts and observed that prompts that included task descriptions and test inputs yielded better results. In most cases, the LLMs precisely localized the bugs and also offered guidance on how to proceed. Nevertheless, we also noticed incorrect responses generated by the LLMs, emphasizing the need to validate responses before disseminating feedback to learners.

Domain modeling is an important task in designing, developing, and deploying intelligent tutoring systems and other adaptive instructional systems. We focus here on the more specific task of automatically extracting a domain model from textbooks. In particular, this paper explores using multiple textbook indexes to extract a domain model for computer programming. Our approach is based on the observation that different experts, i.e., authors of intro-to-programming textbooks in our case, break down a domain in slightly different ways, and identifying the commonalities and differences can be very revealing. To this end, we present automated approaches to extracting domain models from multiple textbooks and compare the resulting common domain model with a domain model created by experts. Specifically, we use approximate string-matching approaches to increase coverage of the resulting domain model and majority voting across different textbooks to discover common domain terms related to computer programming. Our results indicate that using approximate string matching gives more accurate domain models for computer programming with increased precision and recall. By automating our approach, we can significantly reduce the time and effort required to construct high-quality domain models, making it easy to develop and deploy tutoring systems. Furthermore, we obtain a common domain model that can serve as a benchmark or skeleton that can be used broadly and adapted to specific needs by others.

Self-explanations could increase student's comprehension in complex domains;however, it works most efficiently with a human tutor who could provide corrections and scaffolding. In this paper, we present our attempt to scale up the use of self-explanations in learning programming by delegating assessment and scaffolding of explanations to an intelligent tutor. To assess our approach, we performed a randomized control trial experiment that measured the impact of automatic assessment and scaffolding of self-explanations on code comprehension and learning. The study results indicate that low-prior knowledge students in the experimental condition learn more compared to high-prior knowledge in the same condition but such difference is not observed in a similar grouping of students based on prior knowledge in the control condition.

As power supply company carries out work to optimize the business environment, much problems such as asymmetric information about electricity consumption of electricity users, poor professional interaction channels and low work efficiency have emerged while the level of power supply services has been improved. Relying on the Internet of Things (IoT) platform of power supply company, open graphic library (OpenGL) technology, Activiti engine and java programming technology and other mature technologies, a set of graphical workflow configuration platform has been built to support the customization of the electricity users. The platform graphically implements the construction of power business workflow, using drag-anddrop components and model-driven logic to create front-end web and mobile applications. The workflow platform conducts compliance audit during workflow configuration, keeps business information strictly outside the negative list, and each work is automatically initiated, executed and associated to abstract behaviours with high application rate and comprehensiveness based on rich and diverse work scenarios to meet the needs of Beibei power supply company. After the workflow configuration platform was applied, the business management and execution efficiency of the power supply company was improved by more than 30%. (C) 2021 The Author(s). In this paper, firstly, a decoupled sliding mode controller (DSMC) is designed for stabilization of an inverted pendulum system. Secondly, a multi-objective particle swarm optimization (MOPSO) algorithm is implemented to optimize the DSMC parameters in order to decrease the normalized angle error of the pole and normalized distance error of the cart, simultaneously. The proposed Pareto front for the DSMC problem is validated through comparisons with existing state-of-the-art multi-objective algorithms. Then, java programming with applets is presented in order to simulate the stability and educate the internet-based control. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
