When a novice programmer starts learning computer programming, C or java are often employed. They are general purpose and useful languages, but for Japanese novice programmers these programming languages are difficult. One reason for this difficulty is English keywords employed in these programming languages;that is, these words are not in Japanese learner's native language. Recently, for Japanese novice programmers, "Nihongo-based" programming languages have been developed in Japan. PEN is a Nihongo-based programming language for education. A programming environment has been developed for PEN, and the environment has an interpreter. However, there has not been developed a compiler for PEN. In this paper, we aim to develop a compiler for PEN language;actually, we develop a translator from PEN into C, and we finally obtain a binary code with a C compiler such as gcc.

Finding similar binary programs is a challenging task, as there is no best way to compute this kind of similarity. The approach in the current paper is based on the fact that some programs retain structural information from the source code, like the division into packages, classes and methods. Using such a hierarchical structure, comparison algorithms based on OpCode n-grams can be enriched in order to produce more meaningful results. The method was implemented in order to detect plagiarism cases in a collection of Android applications written in java. By employing the new techniques, the plagiarism detector exceeded 95% in terms of both precision and recall. The algorithm performance is also better if we use the new information about the program hierarchy, as the proposed system managed to compare large applications of over 7000 methods in about 15 seconds. By automatically detecting plagiarism cases from an early stage, our framework can limit the loss in financial revenue for the legitimate developers.

Modern software systems are increasingly required to run for a long time and deliver uninterrupted service. Their requirements or their environments, however, may change. Therefore, these systems must be updated dynamically, at run-time. Typical examples can be found in manufacturing, transportation, or space applications, where stopping the system to deploy updates can be difficult, costly, or simply not possible. In previous work we proposed a model-driven approach that uses automatically synthesized finite-state controllers from scenario-based assume/guarantee specifications to safely and efficiently dynamically update the system. In this paper we describe an execution infrastructure of this approach, which allows us to execute and deploy newly synthesized dynamically updating controllers on embedded devices. We present a prototype implementation in java for Lego Mindstorms robots. This experience gained can lead to a systematic approach to implement dynamic updates in the aforementioned critical software-intensive systems.

We present an approach to detect function purity in javaScript. A function is pure if none of its applications cause observable side-effects. The approach is based on a pushdown flow analysis that besides traditional control and value flow also keeps track of write effects. To increase the precision of our purity analysis, we combine it with an intraprocedural analysis to determine freshness of variables and object references. We formalize the core aspects of our analysis, and discuss our implementation used to analyze several common javaScript benchmarks. Experiments show that our technique is capable of detecting function purity, even in the presence of higher-order functions, dynamic property expressions, and prototypal inheritance.

In this paper we show how deductive and abductive reasoning in distributed authorisation can be efficiently ported to Android. Such logical-inference processes prove to be important tools due to the intrinsic autonomic-nature of these mobile devices. Both deduction and abduction are represented by using Constraint Handling Rules (CHR), a high-level declarative constraint programming-language, and implemented in JCHR (CHR embedded into java). To represent credentials we elaborate on RTW, a weighted Role-based Trust-management family of languages: CHR programs are developed after such languages. In general, having weights associated with credentials leads to a more informative reasoning;for instance, access can be granted only if the total uncertainty is less than 20%.

According to the safety -critical java specification, priority ceiling emulation is a requirement for implementations, as it has preferable properties, such as avoiding priority inversion and being deadlock free on uni-core systems. In this paper we explore our hardware supported implementation of priority ceiling emulation on the multicore java optimized processor, and compare it to the existing hardware locks on the java optimized processor. We find that the additional overhead for priority ceiling emulation on a multicore processor is several times higher than simpler, non-premplive locks, mainly due to slow access to shared memory. We also find that PCE is mostly viable with large critical sections.

In java programs, access modifiers are used to control the accessibility of fields and methods from other objects. Choosing appropriate access modifiers is one of the key factors to improve program quality and to reduce potential vulnerability. In our previous work, we presented a static analysis method named Accessibility Excessiveness (AE) detection for each field and method in java program. We have also developed an AE analysis tool named ModiChecker that analyzes each field and method of the input java programs, and reports their excessiveness. In this paper, we have applied ModiChecker to several OSS repositories to investigate the evolution of AE over versions, and identified transition of AE status and the difference in the amount of AE change between major version releases and minor ones. Also we propose when to evaluate source code with AE analysis.

Debugging sessions require a methodical process of finding causes and reducing the number of software problems. During such sessions, developers run a software project, traversing method invocations, setting breakpoints, stopping or restarting executions. In these sessions, developers explore different parts of the code and create knowledge about them. When debugging sessions are over, it is likely that such knowledge is lost, and developers cannot use it in other sessions or sharing it with collaborators. We have developed Swarm Debugging, a new approach for visualizing and sharing information obtained during debugging sessions, providing interactive and real-time visualization techniques, and several searching tools. Through usage scenarios, we demonstrate that it can aid developers to decrease the required time for deciding where to toggle a breakpoint and locate bug causes. We show how Swarm Debugging offers more useful support for many typical development tasks than a traditional debugger tool.

Recent advancements in the field of e-learning and virtual learning have changed the face of education. An important part of learning process is evaluation of student learning through examinations. This paper suggests a framework for evaluation of computer science practical examinations. The framework is implemented using java programming language and many open source tools and libraries. The developed framework performs evaluation in four steps. The first step is compiler output interpretation in which the false errors generated by compiler are eliminated and only actual errors are reported. In the second step, unit testing of compiled programs is done. In third step, software metrics like lines of code, lines of comment, McCabe’s cyclomatic complexity, and number of modules are calculated for the programs. Finally, the semantic similarity of student programs is checked against the model program. The implemented framework is tested on student programs, and the accuracy of results is satisfactory. This framework will be helpful in efficiently evaluating student programs in practical examinations. It works for C, C++, and java programming languages. © The Author(s) 2015.

Today, any application that requires processing information gathered from the Web will likely require a parallel processing approach to be able to scale. While writing such applications, the developer should be able to exploit several types of parallelism paradigms in a natural way. Most of the available development tools are focused on just one of these parallelism types, e.g. the data parallelism, stream processing, etc. In this paper, we introduce ProcessFast, a java framework for the development of concurrent/distributed applications, designed to allow the developer to integrate both stream/task parallelism and data parallelism in the same application and to seamlessly combine solutions to sub-problems where each solution exploits a specific programming model.
