Changing Engines in Midstream: A java Stream Computational Model for Big Data Processing

With the addition of lambda expressions and the Stream API in java 8, java has gained a powerful and expressive query language that operates over in-memory collections of java objects, making the transformation and analysis of data more convenient, scalable and efficient. In this paper, we build on java 8 Stream and add a DistributableStream abstraction that supports federated query execution over an extensible set of distributed compute engines. Each query eventually results in the creation of a materialized result that is returned either as a local object or as an engine defined distributed java Collection that can be saved and/or used as a source for future queries. Distinctively, DistributableStream supports the changing of compute engines both between and within a query, allowing different parts of a computation to be executed on different platforms. At execution time, the query is organized as a sequence of pipelined stages, each stage potentially running on a different engine. Each node that is part of a stage executes its portion of the computation on the data available locally or produced by the previous stage of the computation. This approach allows for computations to be assigned to engines based on pricing, data locality, and resource availability. Coupled with the inherent laziness of stream operations, this brings great flexibility to query planning and separates the semantics of the query from the details of the engine used to execute it. We currently support three engines, Local, Apache Hadoop MapReduce and Oracle Coherence, and we illustrate how new engines and data sources can be added.

This paper presents a software framework aimed at both simplifying the development of large and distributed complex systems and guarantying an efficient execution of applications. This software framework takes advantage of a concise actor model that makes easy the development of the actor code by delegating the management of events (i.e., the reception of messages) to the execution environment. Moreover, it allows the development of scalable and efficient applications through the possibility of using different implementations of the components that drive the execution of actors. In particular, the paper introduces the software framework and presents the first results of its experimentation.

Dynamic websites rely on caching and clustering to achieve high performance and scalability. While queries benefit from middle-tier caching, updates introduce a distributed cache consistency problem. One promising approach to solving this problem is Freshness-Aware Caching (FAC): FAC tracks the freshness of cached data and allows clients to explicitly trade freshness of data for response times. The original protocol was limited to single-object lookups and could only handle complex requests if all requested objects had been loaded into the cache at the same time. In this paper we describe the Multi-Object Freshness-Aware Caching (MOFAC) algorithm, an extension of FAC that provides a consistent snapshot of multiple cached objects even if they are loaded and updated at different points of time. This is done by keeping track of their group valid interval, as introduced and defined in this paper. We have implemented MOFAC in the JBoss java EE container so that it can provide freshness and consistency guarantees for cached java beans. Our evaluation shows that those consistency guarantees come with a reasonable overhead and that MOFAC can provide significantly better read performance than cache invalidation in the case of concurrent updates and reads for multi-object requests. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland

The verification process in industrial context of embedded software in smart card is considered difficult, extremely time-consuming, and costly, with very few tools and techniques available to aid in the verification process. The work proposed in this paper consist to define the main architecture of testing java card application and a specific test model which consists of reducing a given java-card application to one method which have one input and one output data which correspond with the real communication between the card and the off-card applications. The paper details the first step of testing constraint specifications which consist of modeling and generating control flow graph in inter and intra procedural level from the byte code of java-card applications.

Software corpora facilitate reproducibility of analyses, however, static analysis for an entire corpus still requires considerable effort, often duplicated unnecessarily by multiple users. Moreover, most corpora are designed for single languages increasing the effort for cross-language analysis. To address these aspects we propose Pangea, an infrastructure allowing fast development of static analyses on multi-language corpora. Pangea uses language-independent meta-models stored as object model snapshots that can be directly loaded into memory and queryed without any parsing overhead. To reduce the effort of performing static analyses, Pangea provides out-of-the box support for: creating and refining analyses in a dedicated environment, deploying an analysis on an entire corpus, using a runner that supports parallel execution, and exporting results in various formats. In this tool demonstration we introduce Pangea and provide several usage scenarios that illustrate how it reduces the cost of analysis.

To evaluate applications for Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks (VANETs) simulations are a widely used alternative to potentially costly and complex field tests. For authentic results, simulations of realistic vehicular movement and communication environment are mandatory. Usually, a traffic simulator and a network simulator are used for the first and second requirement, respectively. Some VANET simulators combine independent simulators of both domains while others implement the necessary functionality themselves. However, due to different scopes of functionality, available protocols, etc., the choice of a VANET simulator has an impact on the result. Unfortunately, VANET applications are typically implemented based on a certain VANET simulator's API. Thus, applications have to be adapted when switching between simulators. To solve this problem, we developed a framework which allows for executing VANET applications in different environments without modification. We further defined a VANET API which aims at enabling portability for VANET applications. Hence, applications can be implemented independently of the used VANET simulator and can be even run on real hardware unmodified.

Modern computer applications, especially at enterprise-level, are commonly deployed with a big number of clustered instances to achieve a higher system performance, in which case single machine based solutions are less cost-effective. However, how to effectively manage these clustered applications has become a new challenge. A common approach is to deploy a front-end load balancer to optimise the workload distribution between each clustered application. Since then, many research efforts have been carried out to study effective load balancing algorithms which can control the workload based on various resource usages such as CPU and memory. The aim of this paper is to propose a new load balancing approach to improve the overall distributed system performance by avoiding potential performance impacts caused by Major java Garbage Collection. The experimental results have shown that the proposed load balancing algorithm can achieve a significant higher throughput and lower response time compared to the round-robin approach. In addition, the proposed solution only has a small overhead introduced to the distributed system, where unused resources are available to enable other load balancing algorithms together to achieve a better system performance.

Software Defined Networking (SDN) is seen as one way to solve some problems of the Internet including security, managing complexity, multi-casting, load balancing, and energy efficiency. SDN is an architectural paradigm that separates the control plane of a networking device (e.g., a switch / router) from its data plane, making it feasible to control, monitor, and manage a network from a centralized node (the SDN controller). However, today there exists many SDN controllers including POX, FloodLight, and OpenDaylight. The question is, which of the controllers is to be selected and used? To find out the answer to this question, a decision making template is proposed in this paper to help researchers choose the SDN controller that best fits their needs. The method works as follows;first, several existing open-source controllers are analyzed to collect their properties. For selecting the suitable controller based on the derived requirements (for example, a "java" interface must be provided by the controller), a matching mechanism is used to compare the properties of the controllers with the requirements. Additionally, for selecting the best controller based on optional requirements (for example, GUI will be extremely preferred over the age of the controller), a Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) method named Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) has been adapted by a monotonic interpolation / extrapolation mechanism which maps the values of the properties to a value in a pre-defined scale. By using the adapted AHP, the topmost five controllers have been compared and "Ryu" is selected to be the best controller based on our requirements.

In this paper, we present the design of a novel multicore simulator called ParTejas. It is a fast shared memory based parallel simulator written in java. Unlike recently released parallel simulators that mainly rely on sampling, high level models, and highly relaxed synchronization, we primarily rely on novel concurrent data structures. In specific, we use a lock free parallel slot scheduler for synchronizing the accesses of multiple threads at a shared resource, and we use flexible barriers known as phasers to relax synchronization within bounds. We leverage additional language specific features of java, and demonstrate a mean speedup of 11. 8X (simulation speed of 4-8 MIPS) with 64 threads for a suite of Splash2 and Parsec benchmarks.

One of the basic requirements when managing moving objects in data stream management systems (DSMS) is visualization of continuous queries results on the map. In most cases, the result of a continuous query is data stream whose elements contains information about locations of moving objects so that we are talking about visualization of streaming trajectories. Such visualization involves redrawing the location of moving objects for each new arriving element of data stream that represents the result of a continuous query. In this paper we present an application that allows you to pose continuous queries and visualize their results in OCEANUS DSMS prototype for managing spatio-temporal data streams. The application is based on the java programming language, swingx-ws library for interacting with web services and OpenStreetMap web service that provides free maps of the world. The application allows users familiar with CSQL to pose queries directly using this query language, while beginners can pose a query through creating the conditions by selecting one or more operations from a set of basic operations on moving objects. In addition to presenting current positions of each moving object which satisfies the condition of continuous query it is also enabled to view the entire trajectory of a moving object.
