This paper presents the design and implementation of java-ITS, a constraint-based intelligent tutoring system for teaching the java programming language. In order to learn programming, a student must acquire new cognitive skills, which when coupled with having to also learn the syntax of a particular programming language (necessary to apply a practical context to this skill), can make the process overwhelming. Even if a student can understand programming at a micro-level, to be a better programmer they must be aware of the overall design and context of a program, a useful skill that is often an afterthought. The goal of our project is to make the process of gaining programming skill both accessible through smoothing the learning curve, and relevant (from a practical perspective), such that transfer problems are reduced.

languages such as OpenCL and CUDA offer a standard interface for general-purpose programming of GPUs. However, with these languages, programmers must explicitly manage numerous low-level details involving communication and synchronization. This burden makes programming GPUs difficult and error-prone, rendering these powerful devices inaccessible to most programmers. We desire a higher-level programming model that makes GPUs more accessible while also effectively exploiting their computational power. This paper presents features of Lime, a new java-compatible language targeting heterogeneous systems, that allow an optimizing compiler to generate high quality GPU code. The key insight is that the language type system enforces isolation and immutability invariants that allow the compiler to optimize for a GPU without heroic compiler analysis. Our compiler attains GPU speedups between 75% and 140% of the performance of native OpenCL code.

Safe program execution environment using sandboxing mechanism is one of important differences of java 1 programming language and traditional languages. This safety characteristic can be preserved when a program is written in pure java language, but it may be lost when machine-dependent native code is used in the program. We address this problem by incorporating a novel VM structure that improves the reliability and security of sandboxing mechanism of java VM. It uses a hybrid execution model combining interpreted execution of java code and emulated execution of native code. Unmodified native JNI methods are executed by using an emulation engine using binary translation with additional sandboxed execution enforcement. Experimental results of prototype implementation show that performance penalty for SPECjvm98 benchmarks is relatively small, ranging from 0% to 30% meaning that the proposed approach is promising.

Improved Dynamic Generation of Operationally Acceptable Reroutes Using Network Optimization

This paper develops a methodology for generating operationally acceptable reroutes in the presence of convective weather. A decision support system that defines flight-specific reroutes would aid traffic managers in efficiently maneuvering flights, but only if the reroutes provided were acceptable alternatives. As such, this research describes a methodology that captures, through the network definition and metric evaluations, properties of reroutes that are both flexible and operationally acceptable. By employing network optimization techniques, reroutes are developed that can estimate and avoid dynamic weather constraints and do so by optimizing a set of operational acceptability metrics. This paper first illustrates how prioritizing weather avoidance as compared with other cost factors in network generation alters the reroutes generated, which can aid in parameter setting for automation. The reroutes generated through network optimization are then compared with traditional reroute alternatives by evaluating each set of reroutes against a set of operationally acceptable metrics. The overall approach of the proposed methodology is reviewed and details are provided on the modeling formulation and solution algorithm employed by the network optimization method. Multiple flights with weather-impacted routes are examined to show the effectiveness of the proposed methodology in producing reroutes with better operational acceptability.

Developing parallel applications is notoriously difficult, but it\'s even more complex for desktop applications. The added difficulties primarily come from their interactive nature, where users largely perceive their performance. Desktop applications are typically developed with graphical toolkits that in turn have limitations in regards to multithreading. This article explores desktop applications\' structure, the threading model\'s limitations, and the parallelization of a desktop application using object-oriented and GUI-aware concepts.

The aim of the present manuscript is to present a user-friendly and flexible platform for transforming Kubios HRV output files to ***-file format, used by MS Excel. The program utilizes either native or bundled java and is platform-independent and mobile. This means that it can run without being installed on a computer. It also has an option of continuous transferring of data indicating that it can run in the background while Kubios produces output files. The program checks for changes in the file structure and automatically updates *** file. © 2011 ISA.

This paper describes the design, implementation and application of a multistage fuzzy controller for a coupled tank system, through the OPC industrial protocol. It also presents the details of a fuzzy logic toolbox for industrial process control based on java language, providing easy and functional tools for modelling, building and editing complex fuzzy inference systems and using such logic systems to control a large variety of industrial processes.

On designing safe and flexible embedded DSLs with java 5

Although embedded DSLs are widely used in both functional and dynamic languages they are yet to be widely accepted in the java community. The best available examples are projects like jMock and Hibernate Criteria Query. In this paper we introduce the design of three novel practical embedded DSLs that we designed to showcase the power of java language and specifically the changes introduced in java 5. One of those DSLs is fully implemented as an open source project and is gathering momentum in the community. We proceed to discuss the approaches that allow designing safe and flexible DSLs by extracting generic patterns where possible and describing more specific idioms where necessary. It is our goal that this paper would serve as a starting point for someone designing an embedded DSL that takes full advantage of the java 5 features. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Providing useful feedback to students about both the functional correctness and the internal structure of their submissions is the most labor-intensive part of teaching programming courses. The former can be automated through test scripts and other similar mechanisms;however, the latter typically requires a detailed inspection of the submitted code. This paper introduces AutoGradeMe, a tool that automates much (but not all) of the work required to grade the internal structure of a student submission in the java programming language. It integrates with the Eclipse IDE and multiple third-party plug-ins to provide instructors with an easy-to-use grading environment. More importantly, unlike other automatic grading tools currently in use, it gives students continuous feedback about their work during the development process.
