This paper describes the application of java programming on the computation of thermodynamic properties of Steam and the HFC-134a, 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (R134a) refrigerant through the java applets. The java applets can compute thermodynamic properties of steam and R134a refrigerant, such as specific volume, internal energy, enthalpy, and entropy in the phases of saturated mixture, compressed liquid, and superheated vapor. The calculated values are accurate compared to the standard reference properties tables for steam and refrigerant. (C) 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Recently, due to the increasing demand on custom-made soft drink, this paper has developed an automatic drink making system by using a networked programmable logic controller (PLC) and java applet. In the present scheme, a java-based and cross-platform applet is designed for users to send customized order from a smartphone (or PC) to the PLC through Internet communication. Moreover, a simplified PLC-controlled drink making mechanism is implemented to produce the custom-made drinks. Finally, several application cases are provided to demonstrate the feasibility and practicality of the developed system.

This paper describes in detail a Web-based, browser-server architecture specifically designed to allow live data transmission and a flexible management of remote instruments. The DataSocket and java applet developed using the DataSocket javaBean are used to stream live data from the instrument to remote clients.
