The World Wide Web has emerged as an effective mechanism for distributing educational material to students beyond the bounds of the classroom. The introduction of mobile code, such as java applets, combined with the pervasiveness of the World Wide Web, present the potential to significantly enhance the development and distribution of educational software. This paper illustrates the design and implementation of a java applet for use in educational propulsion engineering curricula. The java Gas Turbine Simulator applet provides an interactive graphical environment which allows the rapid, efficient construction and analysis of arbitrary gas turbine systems. The simulation system couples a graphical user-interface and a transient, space-averaged, aero-thermodynamic gas turbine analysis method, both entirely coded in the java language. The combined package provides analytical, graphical and data management tools which allow the student to construct and control dynamic gas turbine simulations by manipulating graphical objects on the computer display screen. The simulator, running as a java applet, can be easily accessed from the World Wide Web and run from a variety of heterogeneous computer platforms, including PCs, Macintosh, and UNIX machines, through the use of java-enabled Web browsers. A renewal process with waiting time being the life span of a product is widely used as a statistical model in the analysis of product failures. The renewal function is often the expected number of warranty services for the product. This paper proposes approximation of partial distribution method in renewal function computations. The feasibility of the approach and the use of applets that can draw graphics and do calculations are explored. It is demonstrated in a case study that a partial gamma approximation achieves remarkable accuracy for k-out-of-n product system with exponential component life. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. e-Learning engineering courses with online experiments are attracting a great deal of attention because of the flexibility they provide in both teaching and learning. This paper has described an Internet-based teaching and experiment system for control engineering (ITESCE) that provides students with online course material, a simulator, an online control experiment using an arm robot, and the ability to store and search simulation and experimental results. To implement the functions required by the course and to facilitate connection to the Internet, the ITESCE is based on a standard browser/server architecture with three layers and employs multithreading, java applets, and java database connectivity. Background control subsystems handle the real-time control of experiments, and a network server handles communication with clients and with background control subsystems. A database stores simulation and experimental results. The course covers a variety of control methods, and students can try them out through online simulations and experiments. To enhance realism, a Web camera takes a video of an experiment and streams it to a student's PC in real time.

A visualization tool was developed through a web browser based on java applets embedded into HTML pages, in order to provide a world access to the EAST experimental data. It can display data from various trees in different servers in a single panel. With WebScope, it is easier to make a comparison between different data sources and perform a simple calculation over different data sources.

We apply the new H,G(12) and H,G(1),G(2) phase functions to a large corpus of asteroid photometric data. We make use of low-precision (generally rounded to 0.1 mag) and low-accuracy (rms magnitude uncertainties of +/- 0.2-0.3 mag) data obtained from the Minor Planet Center and modified at Lowell Observatory. We find (1) a correlation between G(1),G(2) values derived for asteroid families and albedos;(2) G(12) homogeneity in families. In addition, we make available an online java applet (titled Asteroid Phase Function Analyzer). The applet may be used to compute asteroid absolute magnitudes and slope parameters using three different phase functions: the H,G, H,G(1),G(2), and H,G(12). The tool also includes non-Gaussian error analysis using Monte Carlo methods. The applet is available at http://***/astphase/. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Finite element simulations produce information that is proportional to the size of the numerical model. For large models, the data produced is voluminous and can therefore be challenging to deal with and interpret. This paper discusses the use of virtual reality to manage this information and presents FEMvrml, an interactive virtual environment within which users can interact with and explore the simulation results. The structure and methodology behind FEMvrml and the algorithms employed are described along with application examples that show the effectiveness and capabilities of the system. There are a large number of connection types in steel structures. This is an area where students cannot get enough in the classroom. Design of each steel connection type is unique. At the same, there are similarities in designs of various connection types. These two factors plus the open-ended nature of the design can make the learning of so many different types of connections both challenging and tedious. While a number of tools are available to help teach design of connections there is no interactive online tool for teaching and learning of design of connections in steel structures. In this article a novel interactive approach and a java applet, called Connection Tutor, is presented for design of a variety of connections in steel structures. Connection Tutor is intended to be used as a user-friendly supplement in teaching design of connections in steel structures. (c) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Comput Appl Eng Educ 20: 568577, 2012

HT-7 is the first superconducting tokamak device for fusion research in *** experiments have been performed on the HT-7 tokamak since 1994 with numerous satisfactory results achieved in the fusion research field. As more and better communication is required with other fusion research laboratories, remote access to experimental data is becoming increasingly important in order to raise the degree of openness of experiments and to expand research results. The web-based remote data browsing system enables authorized users in geographically different locations to view and search for experimental data without having to install any utility software at their terminals. The three-tier software architecture and thin client technology are used to operate the system effectively. This paper describes the structure of the system and the realization of its functions, focusing on three main points: the communication between the participating tiers, the data structure of the system and the visualization of the raw data on web pages.

We have used the computer language java to develop a computer simulation program for heavy-ion elastic scattering based on the parameterized phase shift model. Using this program, we have carried out a chi(2)-fit to the observed differential cross-section data of the heavy-ion elastic scattering and performed computer simulations of the angular distribution, the deflection function, the reaction cross-section, the scattering matrix element, and the analysis results as graphical representations. The program is also applied to elastic scattering of the C-12+C-12 system at E-lab = 1016 MeV.
