A web interface was developed for scientists, teachers and students to access plant, weather and soil databases used for plant growth simulation studies. The interface is coded as a java applet with a graphical user interface (GUI) whereas the databases are managed by Microsoft Access. The java applet obtains input data from the databases, and then directly runs a plant growth simulator programmed in java. With a java (JDK1.1)-embedded web browser running under Windows 95/98/NT, UNIX, or other operating system, users can link to the run-time java applet from our website. For plant growth simulation studies, users can choose a target plant species and different weather and soil conditions from menu choices built into the GUI, and then input agronomic data such as planting date, row spacing, etc. into the relevant text fields. The output is displayed in both graphical and text forms by clicking appropriately marked buttons for such state variables as phenological events, leaf area index (LAI), plant height, biomass, shoot/root ratio, photosynthesis, evapotranspiration, etc. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. An Internet web page is described for organizing and analyzing information about lepidopteran sex pheromone components. Hypertext markup language(HTML) with javaScript program code is used to draw moth pheromone analogs by combining GIF bitmap images for viewing by web browsers such as Netscape or Microsoft Internet Explorer. Straight-chain hydrocarbons of 5-22 carbons with epoxides or unsaturated positions of E or Z geometrical configuration with several alternative functional groups can be drawn by simply checking menu bars or checkboxes representing chain length, E/Z unsaturation points, epoxide position and chirality, and optional functional groups. The functional group can be an aldehyde, alcohol, or ester of formate, acetate, propionate, or butyrate. The program is capable of drawing several million structures and naming them [e.g., (E,E)-8,10-dodecadien-1-ol and abbreviated as E8E10-12:OH]. A java applet program run from the same page searches for the presently drawn structure in an internal database compiled from the Pherolist, and if the component is found, provides a textarea display of the families and species using the component. Links are automatically specified for drawn components if found in the Pherolist web site (maintained by H. Arn). Windowed links can also be made to two other javaScript programs that allow searches of a web site database with over 5900 research citations on lepidopteran semiochemicals and a calculator of vapor pressures of some moth sex pheromone analogs at a specified temperature. Various evolutionary and biosynthetic aspects are discussed in regard to the diversity of moth sex pheromone components.

We have implemented a Web-based simulation program for the contrast transfer function and envelope functions in java and javaScript. The simulation provides interactive controls of all the parameters in those functions. In addition to the predefined functions, users can easily define new functions that use any of the parameters in the preset functions. The most useful feature of this new simulation program is the convenient, universal accessibility through Web browsers on any computer platform that supports java, such as Netscape and Internet Explorer.

We describe two java applets which are useful for insightful presentation of intermediate experimental data in gene discovery projects involving large scale sequencing. One of these applets provides a physical map of a genomic region and provides easy access to the second applet, which furnishes a detailed map of sequence contigs associated with clones on the physical map. In particular, the second applet displays all the known information about each contig, including the presence of exons, database homology 'hits', repetitive elements and other features;the graphics are linked to other World Wide Web pages, providing detailed information on each feature. A new modeling tool GRcut was developed to be used for atomistic simulation of isolated nanoparticles. It generates atomic coordinates in crystalline nanoparticles with equivalent crystallographic surfaces. In addition to 32 crystallographic point groups, nine non-crystallographic point groups with five-fold symmetries are implemented for modeling icosahedral and decahedral clusters in a systematic way. Curved surfaces with spherical, ellipsoidal and cylindrical shapes in arbitrary orientation are also available. This software is useful as a pre-processing tool for molecular simulation on metallic clusters, quantum dots, or fullerenes in high symmetries. The GRcut is distributed as a java applet via the Internet to be used on web browsers.

Online Group Embedded Figures Test (OGEFT) is a new web based testing tool to administer the Group Embedded Figures Test (GEFT) over long distances. GEFT is a perceptual test originally developed to test a subject's cognitive ability to locate a simple shape embedded within a complex figure. Further research shows that GEFT can also be used as an assessment tool for other purpose such as exploring analytical ability, social behavior, and problem solving style. We use GEFT as a research tool to examine the correlation between individual's cognitive perceptual ability and learning ability. In order to administer the paper-based GEFT, all participants would have to report to a central testing site. In addition, grading and data entry by instructors and test proctors is currently done manually. To overcome these obstacles of the paper-based GEFT, Online Group Embedded Figures Test (OGEFT) is developed using web technology at Gannon University. The OGEFT extends the abilities of GEFT without losing its original purpose and allows the administration and delivery of GEFT to a widespread, graphic population.
