Fast networks like InfiniBand are important for large-scale applications and big data analytics. Current InfiniBand hardware offers bandwidths of up to 200 Gbit/s with latencies of less than two microseconds. While it is mainly used in high performance computing, there are also some applications in the field of big data analytics. In addition, some cloud providers are offering instances equipped with InfiniBand hardware. Many big data applications and frameworks are written using the java programming language, but the java Development Kit does not provide native support for InfiniBand. To this end we propose neutrino, a network library providing comfortable and efficient access to InfiniBand hardware in java as well as epoll based multithreaded connection management. Neutrino supports InfiniBand message passing as well as remote direct memory access, is implemented using the java native interface, and can be used with any java Virtual Machine. It also provides access to native C structures via a specially developed proxy system, which in turn enables the developer to leverage the InfiniBand hardware's full functionality. Our experiments show that efficient access to InfiniBand hardware from within a java Virtual Machine is possible while fully utilizing the available bandwidth.

Y Most programming languages support foreign language interoperation that allows developers to integrate multiple modules implemented in different languages into a single multilingual program. While utilizing various features from multiple languages expands expressivity, differences in language semantics require developers to understand the semantics of multiple languages and their interoperation. Because current compilers do not support compile-time checking for interoperation, they do not help developers avoid interoperation bugs. Similarly, active research on static analysis and bug detection has been focusing on programs written in a single language. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to analyze multilingual programs statically. Unlike existing approaches that extend a static analyzer for a host language to support analysis of foreign function calls, our approach extracts semantic summaries from programs written in guest languages using a modular analysis technique, and performs a whole-program analysis with the extracted semantic summaries. To show practicality of our approach, we design and implement a static analyzer for multilingual programs, which analyzes JNI interoperation between java and C. Our empirical evaluation shows that the analyzer is scalable in that it can construct call graphs for large programs that use JNI interoperation, and useful in that it found 74 genuine interoperation bugs in real-world Android JNI applications.

From Oracle JVM to Android Runtime, most java runtime environments officially support java native interface (JNI) for interaction between java and C. Using JNI, developers can improve java program performance or reuse existing libraries implemented in C. At the same time, differences between the languages can lead to various kinds of unexpected bugs when developers do not understand the differences or comprehensive interoperation semantics completely. Furthermore, existing program analysis techniques do not cover the interoperation, which can reduce the quality of JNI programs. We propose a JNI program analysis technique that analyzes java and Ccode of JN programs using analyzers targeting each language respectively. The C analyzer generates a semantic summary for each C function callable from java and the java analyzer constructs call graphs using the semantic summaries and java code. In addition to the call graph construction, we extend the analysis technique to detect four bug types that can occur in the interoperation between the languages. We believe that our approach would be able to detect genuine bugs as well as improve the quality of JNI programs.

java's type system enforces exception-checking rules that stipulate a checked exception thrown by a method must be declared in the throws clause of the method. Software written in java often invokes native methods through the use of the java native interface (JNI). java's type system, however, cannot enforce the same exception-checking rules on java exceptions raised in native methods. This gap makes java software potentially buggy and often difficult to debug when an exception is raised in native code. In this paper, we propose a complete static-analysis framework called JET to extend exception-checking rules even on native code. The framework has a two-stage design where the first stage throws away a large portion of irrelevant code so that the second stage, a fine-grained analysis, can concentrate on a small set of code for accurate bug finding. This design achieves both high efficiency and accuracy. We have applied JET on a set of benchmark programs with a total over 227K lines of source code and identified 12 inconsistent native-method exception declarations.

Attackers use reverse engineering techniques to gain detailed understanding of executable for malicious purposes, such as re-packaging an Android app to inject malicious code or advertising components. To make reverse engineering more difficult, researchers have proposed various code obfuscation techniques to conceal purposes or logic of code segments. One interesting idea of code obfuscation is to apply code-reuse techniques (e.g., Return-Oriented Programming) to (re-) distribute essential code segments before they are reconstructed at runtime. Such techniques are well understood on x86 platform, but relatively less explored on Android. In this paper, we present an evaluation on the extent to which code-reuse-based techniques can be applied to obfuscate Android apps. Moreover, we extend code-reuse-based obfuscation to the Android platform by proposing an obfuscation mechanism for both java and native code. Results show that 835 gadgets are found in the C standard library (libc. so) which cover the entire Turing complete set. Furthermore, we implement a semi-automatic tool named AndroidCubo and show that it protects both java and native code with comparable security to those obfuscated with java reflection at a small runtime overhead.

This thesis investigates the performance differences between java code compiled by Android Runtime and C++ code compiled by Clang on Android. For testing the differences, the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) algorithm was chosen to demonstrate examples of when it is relevant to have high performance computing on a mobile device. Different aspects that could affect the execution time of a program were ex- amined. One test measured the overhead related to the java native interface (JNI). The results showed that the overhead was insignificant for FFT sizes larger than 64. Another test compared matching implementations of FFTs between java and native code. The conclusion drawn from this test was that, of the converted algorithms, Columbia Iterative FFT performed the best in both java and C++. A third test, evaluating the performance of vectorization, proved to be an efficient option for na- tive optimization. Finally, tests examining the effect of using single-point precision (float) versus double-point precision (double) data types were covered. Choosing float could improve performance by using the cache in an efficient manner.

This paper describes the java MPI bindings that have been included in the Open MPI distribution. Open MPI is one of the most popular implementations of MPI, the Message-Passing interface, which is the predominant programming paradigm for parallel applications on distributed memory computers. We have added java support to Open MPI, exposing MPI functionality to java programmers. Our approach is based on the java native interface, and has similarities with previous efforts, as well as important differences. This paper serves as a reference for the application program interface, and in addition we provide details of the internal implementation to justify some of the design decisions. We also show some results to assess the performance of the bindings. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We propose a method for statically analyzing components that can be part of Android applications and which have not been very well analyzed so far, namely native libraries. As of now, third-party native code can be seen as a black box that can be fed input parameters from the Dalvik bytecode context, and output parameters can be returned back to the bytecode context. However, the native code can still initialize and invoke Android API and internal java-based application classes and methods solely within the native context using an interface towards the Dalvik Virtual Machine. This introduces a contingency during analysis and therefore, it is crucial to understand inner-workings of the native code in order to fully understand the behavior of an application. The contribution of this paper is to bridge the gap between static analysis of Dalvik bytecode and native code by attempting to reconstruct calls to Android APIs and performing data-flow analysis inside native libraries. Our results from real-world applications show that such constructions used for invoking java code inside native code do exist to some extent and could potentially be used more widely in order to obfuscate applications.

It is very common to write device drivers and code that access low level operation system functions in C or C++. There are also many powerful C and C++ libraries available for a variety of tasks. java is a programming language that is meant to be system independent and is arguably much simpler to code than C/C++. However, java has minimal support for talking to native libraries, which results in interesting challenges when using C/C++ libraries with java code. Part of the problem is that java's standard mechanism for communicating with C libraries, java native interface, requires a significant amount of effort to do fairly simple things, such as copy structure data from C to a class in java. This is largely solved by using the java native Access Library, which provides a reasonable way of transferring data between C structures and java classes and calling C functions from java. A more serious issue is that there is no mechanism for a C/C++ library loaded by a java program to call a java function in the java program, as this is a major issue with any library that uses callback functions. A solution to this problem was found using a moderate amount of C code and multiple threads in java. The Keck Task Language API (KTL) is used as a primary means of inter-process communication at Keck and Lick Observatory. KTL is implemented in a series or C libraries and uses callback functions for asynchronous communication. It is a good demonstration of how to use a C library within a java program.
