This paper discusses the implementation using the java programming language of the computer code WebPRAC (Parabolic Reflector Analysis Code for the Web), introduced in [1], the internet version of PRAC for DOS [2] and PRAC for Windows [3]. PRAC is an user-friendly code designed for analyzing offset parabolic reflector antennas with high precision and accuracy, and have been extensively used over the past decade in teaching (currently distributed with [4]), research and industrial development. WebPRAC is intentionally designed for the Internet, running directly from within the web browser on all usual operating systems (Windows, Linux, Macintosh, Solaris, etc...).

Less Is More: A Mixed-Methods Study on Security-Sensitive API Calls in java for Better Dependency Selection

[Background:] Security-sensitive APIs provide access to security-sensitive resources, e.g., the filesystem or network resources. Including such API calls—directly or through dependencies—increases the application’s attack surface. An example of such a phenomenon is Log4Shell, which rendered many applications vulnerable due to network-related capabilities (JNDI lookup) in log4j package. Before the Log4Shell incident, alternate logging libraries to log4j were available that do not make JNDI lookup calls. [Problem:] The impact of such an incident would be minimal if information about network-related API calls by logging libraries were available to the developers. And so the lack of visibility into the calls to these security-sensitive APIs by functionally similar open-source packages makes it difficult for developers to use them as a dependency selection criterion. [Goal:] The goal of this study is to aid developers in selecting their dependency by understanding security-sensitive APIs in their dependency through call graph analysis. [Methodology:] We conducted a mixed-methods study with 45 java packages and defined a list of 219 security-sensitive APIs. We categorized these 219 APIs into 3 themes and 15 categories. We then used call graph analysis to analyze the prevalence of these APIs in our selected package versions, with and without their dependencies. Finally, we conducted a survey with open-source developers (110 respondents) showing the comparison of functionally similar packages w.r.t. security-sensitive API calls to understand the usefulness of this API information in the dependency selection process. [Result:] The number of security-sensitive API calls of functionally similar packages can vary from 0 to 368 in one API category and 0 to 429 in total. Our survey results show that 73% developers agree that information about the number and type of security-sensitive API calls of functionally similar packages would have been useful in their dependency selection.

JOANA (java Object-sensitive Analysis) and java SDG API are analysis frameworks available for analyzing java programs for different applications. Now a days, the continuous evolution of the customer expectations and requirements has resulted in the increase of size of the software. Due to which the difficulties in maintaining software are increasing. Both Joana and java SDG API consist of a variety of analysis techniques based on dependence graph generation and computation of slices of an input program. In this paper, we make a comparative analysis study on the effectiveness and efficiency of both these above mentioned analysis frameworks in generating the corresponding intermediate dependence graph and computing slices. The analysis is based on the bytecode of the program under consideration. The experimental analysis shows that Joana can be extended for various diverse applications.

Although significant advances have been made over the past few years, constraint solving is still the main bottleneck in symbolic execution. In fact, it often dominates the cost in overall performance. Thus, it is important to reduce the overhead in calling a constraint solver by exploring domain specific insights. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to optimize constraint solving. Our approach integrates two existing strategies: assertion stack and caching. We implemented a proof-of-concept tool based on Symbolic Pathfinder, a popular symbolic execution framework for java programs. We have evaluated the tool on a set of open source software and the results showed that our approach can significantly improve the performance of constraint solving.

An LLM-based Readability Measurement for Unit Tests’ Context-aware Inputs

Automated test techniques usually generate unit tests with higher code coverage than manual tests. However, the readability of automated tests is crucial for code comprehension and maintenance. The readability of unit tests involves many aspects. In this paper, we focus on test inputs. The central limitation of existing studies on input readability is that they focus on test codes alone without taking the tested source codes into consideration, making them either ignore different source codes’ different readability requirements or require manual efforts to write readable inputs. However, we observe that the source codes specify the contexts that test inputs must satisfy. Based on such observation, we introduce the Context Consistency Criterion (a.k.a, C3), which is a readability measurement tool that leverages Large language Models to extract primitive-type (including string-type) parameters’ readability contexts from the source codes and checks whether test inputs are consistent with those contexts. We have also proposed EvoSuiteC3. It leverages C3’s extracted contexts to help EvoSuite generate readable test inputs. We have evaluated C3’s performance on 409 java classes and compared manual and automated tests’ readability under C3 measurement. The results are two-fold. First, The Precision, Recall, and F1-Score of C3’s mined readability contexts are 84.4%, 83%, and 83.7%, respectively. Second, under C3’s measurement, the string-type input readability scores of EvoSuiteC3, ChatUniTest (an LLM-based test generation tool), manual tests, and two traditional tools (EvoSuite and Randoop) are 90%, 83%, 68%, 8%, and 8%, showing the traditional tools’ inability in generating readable string-type inputs. We have conducted a survey based on the questionnaires collected from 30 programmers with varied backgrounds. The results reveal that when C3 identifies readable differences between tests, programmers tend to give similar opinions of the test’s readability of C3. © 2024, CC

Biometric authentication has become increasingly popular in security systems. Recently, the systems based on the human iris, which develops a unique pattern before birth, have produced very high rates of recognition. The iris image is first blurred using a Gaussian filter, and the edge is detected using the Canny edge detection technique. An algorithm, which uses the center of the image as a starting point, is proposed to isolate the pupillary region. The initial estimate of the location of the pupil is then refined, and the iris is located by using the integrodifferential operator. In order to detect the upper and the lower eyelids, we deploy the integrodifferential operator again; however, the path of contour integration is changed from circular to arcuate. A thresholding technique is then applied to locate the eyelashes. The annular iris region is unwrapped from a polar coordinate system to a rectangular canvas. The 2D Gabor wavelets are used to extract the discriminating features. Then, the phase information is extracted to produce an iris code of 2048 bit and a mask, which denotes the noisy regions, of the same length. The Hamming distance is applied for the matching purpose. We also design a graphical user interface (GUI) in java which allows the comparison of two images, the verification that an image is that of a specific person, and to search through the previously scanned irises for an exact match. The proposed scheme is computationally effective as well as reliable in term of recognition rate of 99.21%.

Generating a generic fluent API in java

Context: Algorithms for generating a safe fluent API have been actively studied in recent years. A safe fluent API is a fluent API that reports incorrect chaining of the API methods as a type error to the API users. Although such a safety property improves the productivity of users, the construction of a safe fluent API is excessively complicated for developers. Therefore, generation algorithms are studied to reduce the development costs of a safe fluent API. Such studies may beneft many programmers, as a fluent API is a popular design in the real world. Inquiry: The generation of a generic fluent API remains unaddressed. A generic fluent API refers to a fluent API that provides generic methods (those that contain type parameters in their defnitions). The Stream API in java is an example of a generic fluent API. Previous studies on safe fluent API generation have focused on the grammar classes that the algorithms can deal with for syntax checking. The key concept of such studies is using nested generics to represent a stack structure for the parser built on top of the type system. Within this context, the role of a type parameter has been limited to the internal representation of a stack element of that parser on the type system. Library developers cannot use type parameters to include a generic method in their API so that the semantic constraints for their API will be statically checked;for example, the type constraint on the items passed through a stream. Approach: We propose an algorithm for generating a generic fluent API. Our translation algorithm is modeled as the construction of deterministic fnite automaton (DFA) with type parameter information. Each state of the DFA holds information regarding which type parameters are already bound in that state. This information is used to identify whether a method invocation in a chain newly binds a type to a type parameter or refers to a previously bound type. Hadoop is a java-based open source programming model that becomes a pillar in recent distributed computing by providing massive storage and multiprocessing of data. Hadoop becomes a simple and easy to implement programming model through the usage of commodity hardware. Hadoop open-source became a foundation for massive parallel processing of big data which includes scientific analytics, e-commerce data and sales planning, and processing enormous volumes of sensor from various sensors. Implementing advanced control for a large-scale power plant targeting multiple objectives can be computationally intensive as well as difficult when attempted in a centralized control configuration. In order for this control to be more flexible, adaptive and robust, it needs to be coordinated in distributed environments, specifically among agents. The method presented in this paper involves using Multi-Agent System (MAS), which addresses the challenges of computing optimal multi-objective control using java Agent Development Framework (JADE), a much more communication-efficient, network-oriented environment.

Many factor that affected schedule arrangement made the problem became more complicated. Searching of timetabling solution using optimization process is a real example for a complex computation. One of the ways to solve the problem of computation complexity is changing sequential computation paradigm into parallel computing ones. This research aimed to analyze and to apply parallel processing for building a courses timetabling software for the Department of Electrical Engineering, State Islamic University of Sultan Syarif Kasim Riau. The research was begun with the description of course timetabling problem in the department. Some of solution prerequisite for hard and soft constraints has been determined. Afterward, the reconstruction of conflict course graph was done. The process was done simultaneously with the process of rooms to be assembled, graph that was formed has included its room candidate. Then, conflict course graph was colored to become non-conflict course graph. The coloring task was calculated by parallel computing using multithread classes in java programming language. The results were achieved in this research are the process of graph to be formed in an adjacency matrix, and coloring of the graph was done successfully both in sequential and multithread computations. Solving the process into two threads, the execution time become faster than sequential ones with the speed up is 3.14 times, and the efficiency of processor is 78.51%.
