Remote method invocation as a first-class citizen

The classical remote method invocation (rmi) mechanism adopted by several object-based middleware is 'black-box' in nature, and the rmi functionality, i.e., the rmi interaction policy and its configuration, is hard-coded into the application. This rmi nature hinders software development and reuse, forcing the programmer to focus on communication details often marginal to the application being developed. Extending the rmi behavior with extra functionality is also a very difficult job, because added code must be scattered among the entities involved in communications. This situation could be improved by developing the system in several separate layers, confining communications and related matters to specific layers. As demonstrated by recent work on reflective middleware, reflection represents a powerful tool for realizing such a separation and therefore overcoming the problems referred to above. Such an approach improves the separation of concerns between the communication-related algorithms and the functional aspects of an application. However, communications and all related concerns are not managed as a single unit that is separate from the rest of the application, which makes their reuse, extension, and management difficult. As a consequence, communications concerns continue to be scattered across the meta-program, communication mechanisms continue to be black-box in nature, and there is only limited opportunity to adjust communication policies through configuration interfaces. In this paper we examine the issues raised above, and propose a reflective approach specially designed to open up the rmi mechanism. Our proposal consists of a new reflective model, called multi-channel reification, that reflects on and reifies communication channels, i.e., it renders communication channels first-class citizens. This model is designed both for developing new communication mechanisms and for extending the behavior of communication mechanisms provided by the underlying system

An investigation of component-based approaches for software reuse is described. In the days when computer architecture was simpler and systems were developed by procedural languages or other paradigms, it was common that the functionality available within one system was also present in another system. However, these paradigms are not appropriate for surfacing components for developing distributed applications as defined by today's business requirements, and do not facilitate software reuse. It is envisaged that software reuse can be achieved through component-based development. This article discusses the characteristics of components and provides a brief study of the component systems of COM/DCOM, CORBA and java rmi. An example is presented using java rmi and develops keyboard functionality for the Web-aware version that matches the original 'green screen' application.

Distributed evolutionary algorithm for optimization in electromagnetics

This paper presents a distributed universal evolutionary optimization environment designed for optimal design in electromagnetics. The optimizer can be tuned to act as a genetic algorithm or as an evolutionary strategy. Basic principles of optimizer design are discussed. The system is coded in java and uses a remote method invocation technique to distribute computational tasks between local and/or remote servers. T.E.A.M Workshop problem 25 was used to estimate parallel performance of the system. An example of application is the optimal location of electrodes for electroconvulsive stimulation is presented.

By, the use of the ability of dynamic reconfiguration, the flexibility, adaptability, and extensibility of distributed systems are enhanced. flow to treat interactions among components during a dynamic reconfiguration is still one of the most crucial problems in this research area. This challenge should be met by middleware design and development. However, the current standard middleware offers little support for dynamic reconfiguration of distributed systems. In this paper, we describe an extended java RAII that supports efficiently dynamic reconfiguration of distributed systems. This extended java RAII can automatically monitor and manipulate invocations between components during a dynamic reconfiguration. Moreover, the extended java RAII can automatically switch invocations from remote to local and vice versa.

Issues involved in testing large distributed applications employing distributed object technologies are discussed. A testing tool, RIOT, that addresses these issues are described. RIOT can be used for testing distributed java applications that use java rmi, Jini, or Jiro technologies. It relies on the availability of the interface descriptions of the objects and services provided in the application. This information is used to define coverage domains that are used to assess the adequacy of tests. These interface-based coverage domains are based on 1) the methods and exceptions that are defined in the interfaces, 2) mutations that can be created from the methods and parameters, and 3) method sequences that can be defined from the methods. RIOT allows injection of faults at the interfaces of objects. Testers can observe the effects of fault injection and assess the fault handling capabilities of the application. RIOT can also be used to evaluate performance of the application using profiling information. RIOT employs a hierarchical monitoring framework for collecting test execution data. The components of RIOT communicate using java rmi and rely on the use of the reflection mechanism for their functionality. RiOT's architecture is being extended with a distributed debugging and architecture visualization mechanism.

In this paper, we present a dynamic load-balancing scheme in a networked heterogeneous computing environment and apply it to a Web-based scientific visualization system, whose efficiency requires a much stronger support than what is needed for visualizations merely on a single computer. To achieve the overall system resource utilization and to determine the most cost-effective strategy for such computing applications, we adopt a distributed asynchronous pipeline approach and a dynamic load-balancing algorithm at server side to distribute tasks among the whole system. To achieve efficient pipelining, it essentially requires a network with high bandwidth and low latency, an efficient interprocess communication mechanism on the network, and proper adaptation and partitioning of the visualization computations through the pipeline. By taking each client's capability into consideration, this dynamic approach can dispatch some stages of the visualization pipeline to client for executing. Besides, we also present a mechanism for selecting a computing unit that best suits for executing a specific visualization computation in the incoming job. We have demonstrated a number of static and dynamic configurations in task allocation and functional partitioning in order to realize the target application.

Nowadays simulation modeling is applied for solving a wide range of problems. There are simulations which require significant performance and time resources. To decrease overall simulation time a model can be converted to a distributed system and executed on a computer network. The goal of this project is to create a library enabling clear and rapid development parallel discrete event models in AnyLogic. The library is aimed for professionals in computer simulation and helps to reduce code amount. The project includes a research on different synchronization algorithms. In this paper we present techniques which can be used in creating distributed models. We present comparison of a single threaded model with a distributed model implementing optimistic algorithm. The comparison shows a significant improvement in wallclock time achieved by separating the model into independent submodels with minimal communications.

Interface-based fault injection testing (IFIT) is proposed as a technique to assess the fault tolerance of distributed object systems. IFIT uses the description of an object's interface to generate application dependent faults, A set of application independent faults is also proposed, IFIT reveals inadequacies of the fault recovery mechanisms present in the application. The application of IFIT to different distributed object systems is described.

We describe a new approach and system platform for enabling multilateral security in distributed applications. The major goal is to support users configuring their end systems and to negotiate among security requirements of different users with heterogeneous roles. Typical security features such as confidentiality or integrity of transmitted data are presented to the user at different levels of abstraction based on an inheritance hierarchy, according to his background knowledge and experiences. The system platform is implemented in java, with distributed interaction based on java rmi (Remote Method Invocation). It enables flexible integration of existing security libraries and facilities. As a validation example, we present a teleshopping scenario that has been realized using the support platform.

QoS customization in distributed object systems

Applications built on networked collections of computers are increasingly using distributed object platforms such as CORBA, java Remote Method Invocation (rmi), and DCOM to standardize object interactions. With this increased use comes the increased need for enhanced quality of service (QoS) attributes related to fault tolerance, security, and timeliness. This paper describes an architecture called CQoS (configurable QoS) for implementing such enhancements in a transparent, highly customizable, and portable manner. CQoS consists of two parts: application- and platform-dependent interceptors and generic QoS components. The generic QoS components are implemented using Cactus, a system for building highly configurable protocols and services in distributed systems. The CQoS architecture and the interfaces between the different components are described, together with implementations of QoS attributes using Cactus and interceptors for CORBA and java rmi. Experimental results are given for a test application executing on a Linux cluster using Cactus/J, the java implementation of Cactus. Compared with other approaches, CQoS emphasizes portability across different distributed object platforms, while the use of Cactus allows custom combinations of fault-tolerance, security, and timeliness attributes to be realized on a per-object basis in a straightforward way.
