An experiment with WWW interactive learning in university education

The World Wide Web coupled with user friendly Web browsers now provide access to multimedia Web pages in universally accepted formats that can be accessed world wide easily via inexpensive desktop computers. Everyone appears to agree that this technology will revolutionize how students, faculty, researchers, and the public access and use information. Consequently university educators are now enjoying, for the first time in history, a new way to customize and share their unique approaches to teaching and information resources in the form of text, graphics, and sound-to students both on and off campus and, with concern for the future, across time. In this paper we discuss our exploration with the use of interactive learning on the Web in an Introduction to C Programming Course taught in the Department of Computer and Information Science at Cleveland State University, and compare results with the same course taught a previous semester using no interactive WWW learning. Quick Way to Port Existing C/C plus plus Chemoinformatics Toolkits to the Web Using Emscripten

Emscripten is a special open source compiler that compiles C and C++ code into javascript. By utilizing this compiler, some typical C/C++ chemoinformatics toolkits and libraries are quickly ported to to web. The compiled javascript files have sizes similar to native programs, and from a series of constructed benchmarks, the performance of the compiled javascript codes is also close to that of the native codes and is better than the handwritten javascript codes. Therefore, we believe that Emscripten is a feasible and practical tool for reusing existing C/C++ codes on the web, and many other chemoinformatics or molecular calculation software tools can also be easily ported by Emscripten.

*** is a javascript library that brings advanced mathematics to the web browser and server. The case study in this article demonstrates its flexibility by extending the library using custom functions to solve and optimize a rocket trajectory. Several benchmark comparisons with other javascript libraries and state-of-the-art mathematics software are presented, and the current challenges facing ***, including performance and size, are discussed.

Component Stacks for Enterprise Applications

Mobile enterprise application development is transitioning from SQL-based traditional servers toward javascript for server and client. MEAN as a component stack is replacing LAMP, with a growing number of adopters and Web applications. As the world turns faster, we'll see increasingly flexible and evolving component stacks. In this instalment of the Software Technology department, Panos Louridas gives an introduction to LAMP and MEAN and shows how to practically use MEAN. General-Purpose Computation on GPUs in the Browser Using ***

*** is a client-side general-purpose computing on graphics processing units (GPGPU) library for the browser written entirely in javascript. Unlike some of the earlier implementations of client-side GPGPU, *** does not require browser support through an explicit GPGPU API or an installation of a custom native runtime browser extension to enable such support. This allows the library to run on all modern platforms, including on mobile devices such as smartphones. It achieves this by using the already widely adopted Web Graphics Library graphics API in a manner that it is not designed for by making use of javascript-to-OpenGL Shading Language transpilation. The library abstracts away all the unnecessary implementation details of awkwardly performing GPGPU on a graphics API and, at the same time, provides an API that was designed specifically for GPGPU.

Nano-scale thermonuclear fusion in imploding vapor bubbles

Fast Physics on the Web Using C plus plus , javascript, and Emscripten

The web is now capable of running computationally intensive code at near-native speed, enabling new types of content such as physics simulations to be easily shared online. In this article, the author shows how to do just that by writing code in C++ and compiling it to the web with the open-source Emscripten tool, which generates ***, a fast subset of javascript that runs in all web browsers.

It is becoming increasingly challenging to efficiently visualize and extract useful insight from complex and big datasets. javascript stands out as a suitable programming choice that offers mature libraries, easy implementation, and extensive customization, all of which stay in the shadow of new and rapid developments in the language. To illustrate the use of javascript in a scientific context, this article elaborates on Lexicon, a collection of javascript libraries for generating interactive visualizations in bioinformatics and other custom libraries.

Comment on "The properties of free polymer surfaces and their influence on the glass transition temperature of thin polystyrene films" by J.S. Sharp, J.H. Teichroeb and J.A. Forrest

Sharp, Teichroeb and Forrest [J.S. Sharp, J.H. Teichroeb, J.A. Forrest, Eur. Phys. J. E 15, 473 (2004)] recently published a viscoelastic contact mechanics analysis of the embedment of gold nanospheres into a polystyrene (PS) surface. In the present comment, we investigate the viscoelastic response of the surface and conclude that the embedment experiments do not support the hypothesis of a liquid surface layer of sufficiently reduced "rheological temperature" to explain reports of very large reductions in the glass temperature of freely standing ultrathin polystyrene films. We also report some errors and discrepancies in the paper under comment that resulted in an inability to reproduce the reported calculations. We present our findings of error in a spirit of clarifying the problem of embedment of spheres into surfaces and in order that others can understand why they may not reproduce the results reported by Sharp, Teichroeb and Forrest. In the comment, we also examine the effects of the magnitude of the forces that result from the polymer surface-nanosphere particle interactions on the viscoelastic properties deduced from the embedment data and we provide a comparison of apparent surface or "rheological" temperature vs. experimental temperature that indicates further work needs to be performed to fully understand the surface embedment experiments. Finally, we comment that the nanosphere embedment measurements have potential as a powerful tool to determine surface viscoelastic properties.
