WebSiteGen: Web-based database application generator

We can easily access a remote database as well as a local database with HTML forms. Although implementing a database application with HTML forms is much simpler than implementing it with a proprietary graphical user-interface system, HTML forms and CGI programs still must be coded. We implemented a software tool that automatically generates the SQL statements that create a database for an application, the forms that are used as a user interface, and the java servlets that retrieve the data requested through the forms. The database tables to be created and the forms to be generated are determined by the class diagram for the application. Our software tool, which we call WebSiteGen, thus simplifies the implementation of a Web-based database application.

The development of an interactive online asynchronous environment for advanced antenna modeling is presented. Electromagnetic (EM) codes are coupled with the World Wide Web (WWW), and the Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) is used for the creation of a flexible visual pre- and post-processor. The adoption of object-oriented methodologies, in conjunction with the employment of platform independent standards, contributes to the flexibility of the developed application. It is generic enough so that various numerical codes for antenna modeling can be easily integrated under a common multi-disciplinary environment. A case study regarding the modeling of conformal microstrip arrays is presented.

XML is an extremely versatile data format used to represent many different kinds of data. It is playing an increasingly important role in the exchange of a wide variety of data on the Web. In order to implement information searching, XQuery even can be server-side scripts for dynamic web application. This paper proposes an approach based on XQuery for implementing web searching. It describes how to create XQuery application and perform web queries. XQuery scripts can be compiled into executable java servlets that can access web requests and query XML, afterwards generate XHTML pages to respond users. By means of an actual example of an on-line library, it describes and analyses the process that includes building application environment, implementing searching and session tracking. As a result, XQuery can efficiently implement searching scripting on the web application.

We present a system for multispectral image acquisition which is accessible via an Internet connection. The system includes an electronically tunable spectral filter and a, monochrome digital camera, both controlled from a PC-type computer acting as a Web server. In contrast to the three fixed color channels of an ordinary WebCam, our system provides a virtually unlimited number of spectral channels. To allow for interactive use of this multispectral image acquisition system through the network, we developed a set of java servlets which provide access to the system through HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) requests. Since only the standard Common Gateway Interface (CGI) mechanisms for client-server communication are used, the system is accessible from any Web browser.

Given the interest and need for Web processing and programming of distributed systems, researchers are exploring methods and techniques for facilitating programming of such systems. In this paper we explore the performance characteristics of XML processing using SAX for scripting languages PERL and PHP as compared to C (CGI) and java (servlets). We use SAX to process XML files via a Web based interface in each of the four environments.

The objective of this research is to develop a web-based approach to remote machine condition monitoring and control enabled by java technologies and based on publish-subscribe design pattern. On top of a Wise-ShopFloor framework (Web-based integrated sensor-driven (e-ShopFloor) under bar, this system can serve real-time data from bottom up and can function as a constituent component of e-manufacturing, particularly for web-based collaborative manufacturing. It is designed to use the popular client-server architecture, VCM (view-control-model) design pattern, and publish-subscribe design pattern for secure device control and efficient machine condition monitoring. This paper presents the basis of the developed technology for building a web-based monitoring and control system that can be easily integrated to the e-manufacturing paradigm. A case study of a tripod parallel kinematic machine is carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness and validate our approach to web-based real-time machine condition monitoring and remote control for collaborative manufacturing.

Web applications have become a critical component of the global information infrastructure. In government organizations, proprietary software is currently being replaced by open-source. This thesis explores using open-source and java technologies to implement Web applications. A prototype of the framework was implemented for a military information site. Implementation was straightforward and performance of the prototype was excellent, demonstrating advantages in terms of reliability, portability, maintainability, and economy.

Not only does a military academy have all the information overload of a normal university but it also has the extra burden of the military environment. Without a reliable information system, administrative and educational functions cannot be performed. This thesis deals with the problem of administrative overload in managing student, faculty, regiment personnel and course data in a military academy. It proposes an Educational Administrative Management System (EAMS), a Web-based data manage- ment system, as a solution. With this goal in mind, existing client-server architectures, server side application development tools and database technologies are explored, and the best configuration of these tools is selected. Some of them are recommended. As a result of the study, java servlets and java Server Pages are found as the optimal server-side programming tool for the application. A working prototype of the system is provided based on Oracle 8i DBMS, Apache Tomcat Web server, java servlets and java Server Pages. Suggestions are provided for coping with change management issues during the implementation of the system.

This project aims at designing and developing a new approach towards Interactive Distance Learning to provide distance education in both asynchronous and synchronous modes. Various tools are embedded to meet the needs of both instructors and students. In asynchronous mode the interactive tools like Online Message Boards, Online Quizzes, Online exams, Online Course Registration, Online Grades Tool, Assignments, and Course-notes provide education effectively even when the instructors and the students do not participate at the same time. In synchronous mode interactive tools like Online Discussion Groups, Online Students Feedback tool and Microsoft NetMeeting provide education effectively when both the students and the instructors participate simultaneously. It also consists of effective tools which enable both the administrators as well as the instructors to update the respective databases making the tool more effective. This approach provides immediacy of interaction between the instructors and the students such as immediate feedback from the students to the instructor and immediate attention of the instructor to the students. It promotes active learning and student intellectual involvement, students also learn Internet skills that improve employment options after graduation. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
