A type system for the java bytecode language and verifier

The java virtual machine executes bytecode programs that may have been sent from other, possibly untrusted, locations on the network. Since the transmitted code may be written by a malicious party or corrupted during network transmission, the java virtual machine contains a bytecode verifier to check the code for type errors before it is run. As illustrated by reported attacks on java run-time systems, the verifier is essential for system security. However, no formal specification of the bytecode verifier exists in the java virtual machine Specification published by Sun. In this paper, we develop such a specification in the form of a type system for a subset of the bytecode language. The subset includes classes, interfaces, constructors, methods, exceptions, and bytecode subroutines. We also present a type checking algorithm and prototype bytecode verifier implementation, and we conclude by discussing other applications of this work. For example, we show how to extend our formal system to check other program properties, such as the correct use of object locks.

Scala and Lift - Functional Recipes for the Web

Today, there's significant interest in functional languages and frameworks that fit the Web better than imperative languages. We explore Scala, an OO-functional language on the java virtual machine, and Lift, a framework implemented on Scala's functional features. The Scala language offers functional programming features and asynchronous message-passing concurrency alongside a statically typed model. Lift exploits this model to offer secure, higher-level abstractions to Web developers.

Remote Method Delegation: a Platform for Grid Computing

While many cluster and grid computing frameworks are available, the task of building secure distributed systems or implementing distributed algorithms continue to be a challenging task due to the inherent distributed nature of such systems with multiple failure modes and security issues. In this paper, we present the design and development of remote method delegation (RMD), which is a secure lightweight grid computing platform with load balancing and code migration. RMD is focused on improving the usability issues that plague related industry solutions. The platform is implemented on the JVM (java virtual machine) and supports the java and Kotlin programming languages, however, the platform should theoretically work with other JVM languages. RMD was designed to simplify the implementation of distributed algorithms by providing a Kotlin DSL (domain specific language) that allows the programmer to define jobs within dedicated code blocks. Users from around the world can donate their own computing resources by hosting their own job server. RMD is secured by placing all untrusted code within a sandbox environment that prevents potentially malicious actions from taking place. To demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed model, a proof of concept implementation has been constructed with real examples demonstrating the usefulness of the proposed solution.

A quantitative study for java microprocessor architectural requirements. Part I: Instruction set design

java was designed for network programming. This imposes certain requirements on its virtual machine instruction set architecture and on designs that support java. The purpose of this study is to carry out a behavioral analysis of the different aspects of java instruction set architecture. This will help in establishing the hardware requirements for executing java bytecodes. First, the bytecode interpreter was instrumented to include performance counters and statistics collectors. Then performance metrics were collected through benchmarking. Analyzing these data helps to identify performance-critical aspects that are candidates for hardware support, while less critical aspects can be left for software implementations. In this first part of our two-part paper, we study access patterns for data types, addressing modes, and instruction encoding. Recommendations for architectural requirements for java processors will be made throughout this study. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A practical method for specification and analysis of exception handling -: A java/JVM case study

In this paper, we provide a rigorous framework for language and platform independent design and analysis of exception handling mechanisms in modern programming languages and their implementations. To illustrate the practicality of the method we develop it for the exception handling mechanism of java and show that its implementation on the java virtual machine (JVM) is correct. For this purpose we define precise abstract models for exception handling in java and in the JVM and define a compilation scheme of java to JVM code which allows us to prove that, in corresponding runs, java and the JVM throw the same exceptions and with equivalent effect. Thus, the compilation scheme can, with reasonable confidence, be used as a standard reference for java exception handling compilation.

On the utilization of java technology in embedded systems

java technology has seen an impressive growth in popularity since its introduction in 1995. Although it has foremost proved its usefulness in the Internet domain, powerful market actors are currently moving java into the embedded systems domain. In this article we identify major design issues in embedded systems, and analyze the suitability of java technology in such systems. We find that java technology can contribute to the embedded system design process on a system level by facilitating higher run-time reliability and the technology can simplify maintenance of the product throughout its life cycle. In addition, programmer efficiency and productivity may be improved, especially for web based applications and distributed embedded systems.

Bytecode instrumentation is a widely used technique to implement aspect weaving and dynamic analyses in virtual machines such as the java virtual machine. Aspect weavers and other instrumentations are usually developed independently and combining them often requires significant engineering effort, if at all possible. In this article, we present polymorphic bytecode instrumentation(PBI), a simple but effective technique that allows dynamic dispatch amongst several, possibly independent instrumentations. PBI enables complete bytecode coverage, that is, any method with a bytecode representation can be instrumented. We illustrate further benefits of PBI with three case studies. First, we describe how PBI can be used to implement a comprehensive profiler of inter-procedural and intra-procedural control flow. Second, we provide an implementation of execution levels for AspectJ, which avoids infinite regression and unwanted interference between aspects. Third, we present a framework for adaptive dynamic analysis, where the analysis to be performed can be changed at runtime by the user. We assess the overhead introduced by PBI and provide thorough performance evaluations of PBI in all three case studies. We show that pure java profilers like JP2 can, thanks to PBI, produce accurate execution profiles by covering all code, including the core java libraries. We then demonstrate that PBI-based execution levels are much faster than control flow pointcuts to avoid interference between aspects and that their efficient integration in a practical aspect language is possible. Finally, we report that PBI enables adaptive dynamic analysis tools that are more reactive to user inputs than existing tools that rely on dynamic aspect-oriented programming with runtime weaving. These experiments position PBI as a widely applicable and practical approach for combining bytecode instrumentations. Copyright (c) 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Design, implementation, and evaluation of a compilation server

Modern JVM implementations interleave execution with compilation of '' hot '' methods to achieve reasonable performance. Since compilation overhead impacts the execution time of the application and induces run-time pauses, we explore offloading compilation onto a compilation server. In this article, we present the design, implementation, and evaluation of a compilation server that compiles and optimizes java bytecodes on behalf of its clients. We show that the compilation server provides the following-benefits for our benchmark programs: (i) lower execution time by reducing the compilation overhead and by enabling more aggressive optimizations;(ii) lower memory allocation by eliminating allocations due to optimizing compilation and the footprint of the optimizing compiler;(iii) lower execution time of the application due to sharing of profile information across different runs of the same application and runs of different applications. We implemented the compilation server in Jikes RVM, and our results indicate that it can reduce running time by an average of 20.5%, interruptions due to compilation by an average of 81.0%, and dynamic memory allocation by 8.6% for our benchmark programs. Simulation results indicate that our current implementation of the compilation server can handle more than 50 concurrent clients while still allowing them to outperform the best performing adaptive configuration.

java-based component framework for dynamic reconfiguration

Updating software via the Internet is becoming a necessary feature of contemporary software. However, most software updating processes need to restart the programs or systems after the new software modules are installed. Dynamic reconfiguration is a technique that can deploy new software modules without restarting. This is usually achieved by modifying programming language syntax, language runtime systems or the code that is compiled. In the paper, a java-based component framework is proposed to support dynamic reconfiguration, which does not need to modify the java language, the java virtual machine or the java bytceode. The component framework has two implementations. The first one is based on the java language itself;it is slower but can be used on almost every java virtual machine. The second one is based on both the java code and native programming interfaces provided by the java virtual machine;it is much more efficient but is platform-dependent. The component framework is able to replace a single component as well as multiple components. In addition, several kinds of component change are permitted, including data members and component interfaces. To demonstrate the use of the component framework, a dynamically reconfigurable TCP is implemented.
