The java virtual machine (JVM) postpones running class initialization methods until their classes are first referenced, such as by a new or static instruction. This process is called dynamic class initialization. Jinja is a semantic framework for java and JVM developed in the theorem prover Isabelle that includes several semantics: java-level big-step and small-step semantics, JVM-level small-step semantics, and an intermediate compilation step, J1, between these two levels. In this paper, we extend Jinja to include support for static instructions and dynamic class initialization. We also extend and re-prove related proofs, including java-level type safety, equivalence between java-level big-step and small-step semantics, and the correctness of a compilation from the java level to the JVM level through J1. This work is based on the java SE 8 specification.

Over the last years several frameworks have emerged in the field of big-data analytics. Recent frameworks expose a developer-friendly API via dynamic languages such as Python. Unfortunately, the integration of dynamic languages with the parallel and distributed runtime of such frameworks is cumbersome, as it requires the integration of two or more language virtual machines via inter-process communication, introducing communication overheads and reducing the benefits of the shared memory present in modern multicore machines. In this paper we highlight the advantages of hosting multiple language runtimes in a single shared (language) virtual machine, and the possible performance gain of such an approach in the context of the Apache Spark framework.

Dynamic software updating (DSU) is a technique that can update running software systems without stopping them. Most existing approaches require programmer participation to guarantee the correctness of dynamic updating. However, manually preparing dynamic updating is error-prone and time-consuming. Therefore, other approaches prefer to aggressively perform updating without programmer intervention, which may definitely lead to unanticipated runtime errors. To reduce human effort and enhance the reliability for dynamic updating, we leverage automatic runtime recovery (ARR) techniques to recover runtime errors caused by improper dynamic updating. This paper presents ADSU, a fully automatic DSU system using ARR. We evaluate ADSU with real updates from widely used open source software systems, i.e., Apache Tomcat, Apache FTP Server and jEdit. The preliminary results have shown that ADSU succeeds in automatically applying 11 of 16 real-world updates that existing counterparts cannot.

Modern language runtimes use just-in-time compilation to execute applications natively. Typically, multiple compiler tiers cooperate so that compilation at a later stage can leverage profiling information generated by earlier tiers. This allows for machine code that is optimized to the actual workload and hardware. In this work, we study the profiling overhead caused by code instrumentation in the HotSpot java virtual machine for 23 applications from the Renaissance suite and five additional benchmarks. Our study confirms two common assumptions. First, most applications move quickly through the profiling phase. However, we also show applications that tier up surprisingly slowly and, thus, are more affected by profiling overheads. We find that the instrumentation needed for profiling can slow application execution down by up to 35x. A key factor is the memory contention on the shared profiling data structures in multi-threaded applications. Second, most virtual call sites are monomorphic, i.e., they only have a single receiver type. This can reduce the run-time cost of otherwise expensive receiver type profiling at virtual call sites. Our analysis suggests that, for the most part, profiling overhead in language runtimes is not a cause for concern. However, we show that there are situations, e.g., in multi-threaded applications, where profiling impact can be consequential.

Designing a java processor supporting horizontal multithreading has been becoming more attractive as network computing gains importance. Different from the traditional superscalar processors that issue multiple instructions from a single instruction stream to exploit the instruction level parallelism (ILP), the horizontal multithreading java processors issue multiple instructions (bytecodes) from multiple threads in parallel to exploit not only the ILP but the thread level parallelism (TLP). Such processors have multiple dispatch slots and require the instruction fetch unit to supply instructions with much higher bandwidth than superscalar processors. Using a traditional superscalar cache architecture in a horizontal multithreading java processor results in high cache miss ratio caused by the interference among the threads. This paper investigates multibank instruction cache architecture for horizontal multithreading java processor to meet the requirements of the high instruction fetch bandwidth. In order to evaluate the cache performance as well as the horizontal multithreading java processor performance, we developed a trace driven simulator. The simulator consists of a trace generator that generates the java bytecode execution traces and an architectural simulator that reads the traces and evaluates,the performance of the instruction cache and the overall performance of the java processor. Our simulation results show that the performance improvements are obtained by the low cache miss ratio and the high instruction fetch bandwidth of the proposed cache architecture. The IPC performance is about 19 when both the number of slots and the number of banks are 8, about 5 times better than one bank cache.

Software written in the java programming language is platform independent, remotely executable and downloadable on demand In this paper, we describe a toolkit developed in java for the purpose of visualizing and analyzing biomedical images. It is comprised of a number of class libraries that enable selection, viewing, manipulation and analysis of biomedical images. java's class libraries and special features such as interfaces, multithreading etc., are extensively used in the design and implementation of the toolkit. The current version of the visualization toolkit supports viewing of JPEG and GIF images only. A medical image viewer developed using this toolkit can be used by doctors in hospitals, offices or at any other locations using a java-enabled web browser running on a variety of hardware/software platforms.

This paper gives out a novel way, TCFI4J, to enforce the control flow integrity to the java applications based on java virtual machine. TCFI4J combines the trusted computing technology and java virtual machine together. It takes full advantage of the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) and gives full consideration to the memory organization of the JVM. TCFI4J takes the integrity of part of JVM's memory image into account for the control flow integrity enforcement. The method presented in this paper can provide the user information about an application's behavior. It can significantly improve the security of a java application with a tolerable performance impact.

Object-oriented programming (OOP) is one of the most common programming paradigms used for building software systems. However, despite its industrial and academic value, OOP is criticized for its high complexity, low maintainability and lack of rigorous principles. Eolang (a.k.a. EO) was created to solve the above problems by restricting its features and suggesting a formal object calculus for this programming language. This paper seeks to analyze the Eolang language and compare it to other OOP languages in order to develop the core features of this new language.

As applications for small embedded mobile devices are getting larger and more complex, it becomes inevitable to adopt more advanced software engineering methods from the field of desktop application development. Aspect-oriented programming (AOP) is a promising approach due to its advanced modularization capabilities. However, existing AOP languages tend to add a substantial overhead in both execution time and code size which restricts their practicality for small devices with limited resources. In this paper, we present optimizations for aspect-oriented mechanisms at the level of the virtual machine. Our experiments show that these optimizations yield a considerable performance gain along with a reduction of the code size. Thus, our optimizations establish the base for using advanced aspect-oriented modularization techniques for developing java applications on small embedded devices.

Since java 8, streams ease the development of data transformations using a declarative style based on functional programming. Some recent studies aim at shedding light on how streams are used. However, they consider only small sets of applications and mainly apply static analysis techniques, leaving the large-scale analysis of dynamic metrics focusing on stream processing an open research question. In this paper, we present the first large-scale empirical study on the use of streams in java. We present a novel dynamic analysis for collecting runtime information and key metrics that enable the fine-grained characterization of sequential and parallel stream processing. We massively apply our dynamic analysis using a fully automated approach, supported by a distributed infrastructure to mine public software projects hosted on GitHub. Our findings advance the understanding of the use of streams, both confirming some of the results of previous studies at a much larger scale, as well as revealing previously unobserved findings in the use of streams.
