Along with the developing of information technology, java platform a plays more and more important role in building enterprise information system. Especially after the cloud computing emerged, java applications are used as kinds of services to provide the users some function. Users use these services remotely, and the applications should give the users some trust evidence. Controlflow integrity endows the software the ability to show the applications' behaviors conform to the users' expectations. But the java virtual machine's memory organization is different from physical machine and hinders the application of CFI. This paper gives out the a novel way to enforce the control flow integrity to the java applications based on the memory organization of the java virtual machine. The method presented in this paper can provide the user information about an application's behavior, and significantly improve the security of a java application.

visualization is applied in monitoring java virtual machine (JVM) running process, and provides a java programmer with intuitive observation to the data and their relations. To achieve this, we propose a JVM framework with feature of visualization, namely Venus. Our work includes two modeling tasks: the type system visual area modeling and runtime system visual area modeling. In type system visual area modeling, we model it by building the GUI component of type system, refining the load, link, preparation and initialization processes. In runtime system visual area modeling, we model it by building the GUI component of runtime system and refining the processes of three different kinds of instruction execution.

Embedded systems provide limited storage capacity. This limitation conflicts with the demands of modern virtual machine platforms, which require large amounts of library code to be present on each client device. These conflicting requirements are often resolved by providing specialized embedded versions of the standard libraries, but even these stripped down libraries consume significant resources. We present a solution for "always connected" mobile devices based on a zero footprint client paradigm. In our approach, all code resides on a remote server. Only those parts of applications and libraries that are likely to be needed are transferred to the mobile client device. Since it is difficult to predict statically which library parts will be needed at run time, we combine static analysis, opportunistic off-target linking and lazy code loading to transfer code with a high likelihood of execution ahead of time while the other code, such as exception code, remains on the server and is transferred only on demand. This allows us to perform not only dead code elimination, but also aggressive elimination of unused code. The granularity of our approach is flexible from class files all the way down to individual basic blocks. Our method achieves total code size reductions of up to 95%. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. We address the problem of tuning the performance of the java virtual machine (JVM) with run-time flags (parameters). We use the HotSpot JVM in our study. As the HotSpot JVM comes with over 600 flags to choose from, selecting a subset manually to maximize performance is infeasible. In prior work, the potential performance improvement is limited by the fact that only a subset of the tunable flags are tuned. We adopt a different approach and present the HotSpot Auto-tuner which considers the entire JVM and the effect of all the flags. To the best of our knowledge, ours is the first auto-tuner for optimizing the performance of the JVM as a whole. We organize the JVM flags into a tree structure by building a flag-hierarchy, which helps us to resolve dependencies on aspects of the JVM such as garbage collector algorithms and JIT compilation, and helps to reduce the configuration search-space. Experiments with the SPECjvm2008 and DaCapo benchmarks show that we could optimize the HotSpot JVM with significant speedup;16 SPECjvm2008 startup programs were improved by an average of 19% with three of them improved dramatically by 63%, 51% and 32% within a maximum tuning time of 200 minutes for each. Based on a minimum tuning time of 200 minutes, average performance improvement for 13 DaCapo benchmark programs is 26% with 42% being the maximum improvement.

Developing parallel applications that exploit the hardware resources remains challenging. We tackle this issue for fork/join applications running on a single java virtual machine (JVM) in a shared-memory multicore. An optimal fork/join application should maximize parallelism while minimizing overheads, and maximize locality while minimizing contention. Unfortunately, achieving these goals is challenging due to the complexity of tuning fork/join applications. As a result, fork/join applications often suffer from several performance issues such as excessive object creation and reclaiming, suboptimal forking, load imbalance, and inappropriate synchronization. In contrast to the extensive manual experimentation commonly required to properly tune fork/join applications, we devise a coaching tool able to automatically point developers to specific parts of such applications where performance problems originate and suggest concrete code modifications to fix them. Given the increasing popularity of fork/join parallelism on the JVM, many applications can benefit from our approach, including applications using standard java APIs such as Streams and CompletableFuture.

Contemporary concurrent server applications, commonly built of smaller and independent services, are using concurrent threads to serve many incoming requests and often have to perform under excessive load. Those applications are relatively easy to develop in general-purpose, imperative programming languages such as java, and have great tooling support. However, such applications are not easily scalable, mostly due to relying on oversized OS kernel threads, which can be created only in a limited number on finite hardware resources. Furthermore, heavyweight OS threads are implemented so robustly and generically to support various usage scenarios, and are, therefore, wasteful in resources and often inefficient in addressing specific application demands. Those challenges in software development resulted in various asynchronous programming techniques. This paper presents an exploration of a novel structured concurrency model in the java virtual machine (JVM), introduced within OpenJDK's Project Loom. It is focused on the exploitation of fibers, new lightweight implementation of virtual threads within the JVM depending on delimited continuations. Furthermore, on several applications' benchmark cases, we analyzed performance with traditional threads and new fibers in different configurations. Finally, we discussed the current challenges of implementing fibers as a feasible approach for the more efficient future of java.

Dual-execution/checkpointing based transient error tolerance techniques have been widely used in the high-end mission critical systems. These techniques, however, are not very attractive for cost-sensitive embedded systems because they require extra resources (e.g., large memory, special hardware, etc), and thus increase overall cost of the system. In this paper, we propose a transient error tolerant java virtual machine (JVM) implementation for embedded systems. Our JVM uses dual-execution and checkpointing to detect and recover from transient errors. However, our technique does not require any special hardware support (except for the memory page protection mechanism, which is commonly available in modern embedded processors), and the memory space overhead it incurs is not excessive. Therefore, it is suitable for memory-constrained embedded systems. We implemented our approach and performed experiments with seven embedded java applications.

This paper proposed a systematic approach to optimize J2ME KVM running directly on NAND flash memories (XIP). ne refined KVM generated cache misses 96% less than the original version did. The approach appended a post processor to the compiler. The post processor relocates and rewrites basic blocks within the VM interpreter using a unique mathematical model. This approach analyzed not only static control flow graph but also the pattern of bytecode instruction streams, since we found the input sequence drives the program flow of the VM interpreter. The proposed mathematical model is used to express the execution flows of java instructions of real applications. Furthermore, we concluded the mathematical model is a kind of graph partition problem, and this finding helped the relocation process to move program blocks to proper NAND flash pages. The refinement approach dramatically improved the locality of the virtual machine thus reduced cache miss rates. Our technique can help J2ME-enabled devices to run faster and extend longer battery life. The approach also brings potential for designers to integrate the XIP function into System-on-Chip thanks to lower demand for cache memory.

How well the web applications handle the workload is a key factor in determining the performance of the web service. Due to its support for multithreading at language level, java is becoming a popular language for web application. The performance of java application is greatly dependent on java virtual machine (JVM). Performance of multithreaded java application can be enhanced by fully utilizing the computing resources of dual-core processor. This paper targets in optimizing the JVM to take advantage on dual-core processor. With the optimization, the web service is expected to have a marked performance gain.

While network traffic acquisition and processing is typically done with languages like C that allow low-level hardware access and optimizations, languages like java and their ecosystems aim at easing complex tasks. With a combination of both, strengths can be combined such that more powerful and versatile network traffic processing systems can be engineered. However, while approaches using languages like C are evolved and optimized, network traffic acquisition and processing with the java virtual machine (JVM) is not equivalently optimized and benefits from employing JVM-based languages are not fully exploited yet. We present methods for increasing the network traffic processing performance with the JVM and examples for leveraging dynamic capabilities via a domain specific language and self-adaptivity. We measured improvements by factors of up to 5.9 compared to the old approach and capture rates up to 4.46 million packets per second and could show that the prototype is capable to self-adapt based on performance constraints.
