Emerging cloud computing arouses need for large-scale data processing which in turn promises vigorous developments on big data platforms running on java virtual machine (JVM), such as Hadoop, Spark and Flink. Storing a large amount of data in memory allows those platforms to benefit from satisfying performance and powerful memory management and garbage collection service in java. Non-volatile memory (NVM) provides nonvolatility, byte-addressable and fast access speed characteristics and thus becomes a superior alternative for volatile memory utilizing in future cloud system and java world. This paper presents a recoverable garbage collector named DwarfGC to manage java objects in NVM so as to ensure crash consistency and durability. DwarfGC persists heaprelated metadata into NVM at the beginning of GC and relies on it for recovery. The metadata is stored in a spaceefficient fashion but incurring little time overhead.

Aspect-oriented programming (AOP) has been successfully applied to application code thanks to techniques such as java bytecode instrumentation. Unfortunately, with existing AOP frameworks for java such as AspectJ, aspects cannot be woven into the standard java class library. This restriction is particularly unfortunate for aspects that would benefit from comprehensive aspect weaving with complete method coverage, such as profiling or debugging aspects. In this article we present MAJOR, a new tool for comprehensive aspect weaving, which ensures that aspects are woven into all classes loaded in a java virtual machine, including those in the standard java class library. MAJOR includes the pluggable module CARAJillo, which supports efficient access to a complete and customizable calling context representation. We validate our approach with three case studies. Firstly, we weave existing profiling aspects with MAJOR which otherwise would generate incomplete profiles. Secondly, we introduce an aspect for memory leak detection that also benefits from comprehensive weaving. Thirdly, we present an aspect subsuming the functionality of ReCrash, an existing tool based on low-level bytecode instrumentation techniques that generates unit tests to reproduce program failures. Our aspect-based tools are concisely implemented in a few lines of code, and leverage MAJOR and CARAJillo for comprehensive aspect weaving and for efficient access to calling context information. JVM testing is one of the most widely-used methodologies for guaranteeing the quality of JVMs. Among various JVM testing techniques, synthesis-based JVM testing, which constructs a test program by synthesizing various code snippets (also called program ingredients), has been demonstrated state-of-the-art. The existing synthesis-based JVM testing work puts more efforts in ensuring the validity of synthesized test programs, but ignores the influence of huge ingredient space, which largely limits the ingredient exploration efficiency as well as JVM testing performance. In this work, we propose Vectorized JVM Testing (called VECT) to further promote the performance of synthesis-based JVM testing. Its key insight is to reduce the huge ingredient space by clustering semantically similar ingredients via vectorizing ingredients using state-of-the-art code representation. To make VECT complete and more effective, based on vectorized ingredients, VECT further designs a feedback-driven ingredient selection strategy and an enhanced test oracle. We conducted an extensive study to evaluate VECT on three popular JVMs (i.e., HotSpot, OpenJ9, and Bisheng JDK) involving five OpenJDK versions. The results demonstrate VECT detects 115.03%similar to 776.92% more unique inconsistencies than the state-of-the-art JVM testing technique during the same testing time. In particular, VECT detects 26 previously unknown bugs for them, 15 of which have already been confirmed/fixed by developers.

Energy consumption is one of the most important issues in resource-constrained embedded systems. Many such systems run java-based applications due to java's architecture-independent format (bytecode). Standard techniques for executing bytecode programs, e. g. interpretation or just-in-time compilation, have performance or memory issues that make them unsuitable for resource-constrained embedded systems. A superoperator-extended, lightweight java virtual machine (JVM) can be used in resource-constrained embedded systems to improve performance and reduce memory consumption. This paper shows that such a JVM also significantly reduces energy consumption. This is due primarily to a considerable reduction in the number of memory accesses and thus in energy consumption in the instruction and data TLBs and caches and, in most cases, in DRAM energy consumption. Since the fraction of processor energy dissipated in these units is approximately 60%, the energy savings achieved are significant. The paper evaluates the number of load, store, and computational instructions eliminated by the use of proposed superoperators as compared to a simple interpreter on a set of embedded benchmarks. Using cache and DRAM per access energy we estimate the total processor/DRAM energy saved by using our JVM. Our results show that with 32KB caches the reduction in energy consumption ranges from 40% to 60% of the overall processor, plus DRAM energy. Even higher savings may be achieved with smaller caches and increased access to DRAM as DRAM access energy is fairly high.

Service Oriented Architecture becomes the mainstream of grid research today. On-demand service, which can provides better flexibility for grid users, is purposed in this paper. According to the research on different implementation policies, on-demand service architectures for virtual machine based on-demand service and service specification reference based on-demand service is proposed. Furthermore, it is designed and implemented based on java virtual machine and Groovy script language. Performance testing to the implementation shows that on-demand service can provide better flexibility for grid by low cost, and can speedup mass data processing services usually.

Developing tools for profiling, debugging, testing, and reverse engineering is error-prone, time-consuming, and therefore costly when using low-level techniques, such as bytecode instrumentation. As a solution to these problems, we promote tool development in java using high-level aspect-oriented programming (AOP). We demonstrate that the use of aspects yields compact tools that are easy to develop and extend. As enabling technology, we rely on HotWave, a new tool for dynamic and comprehensive aspect weaving. HotWave reconciles compatibility with existing virtual machine and AOP technologies. It provides support for runtime adaptation of aspects and reweaving of previously loaded code, as well as the ability to weave aspects into all methods executing in a java virtual machine, including methods in the standard java class library. HotWave also features a new mechanism for efficiently passing data between advices that are woven into the same method. We demonstrate the benefits of HotWave's distinguishing features with two case studies in the area of profiling.

Dependence analysis is a fundamental technique for program understanding and is widely used in software testing and debugging. However, there are a limited number of analysis tools available despite a wide range of research work in this field. In this paper, we present javaPDG(1), a static analyzer for java bytecode, which is capable of producing various graphical representations such as the system dependence graph, procedure dependence graph, control flow graph and call graph. As a program-dependence-graph based analyzer, javaPDG performs both intra- and inter-procedural dependence analysis, and enables researchers to apply a wide range of program analysis techniques that rely on dependence analysis. javaPDG provides a graphical viewer to browse and analyze the various graphs and a convenient JSON based serialization format.

While dynamic code evolution in object-oriented systems is an important feature supported by dynamic languages, there is currently only limited support for dynamic code evolution in high-performance, state-of-the-art runtime systems for statically typed languages, such as the java virtual machine. In this tool demonstration, we present the Dynamic Code Evolution VM, which is based on a recent version of Oracle's state-of-the-art java HotSpot (TM) VM and allows unlimited changes to loaded classes at runtime. Based on the Dynamic Code Evolution VM, we developed an enhanced version of the Mantisse GUI builder (which is part of the NetBeans IDE) that allows adding GUI components without restarting the application under development. Furthermore, we redesigned the dynamic AOP framework HotWave to take advantage of the enhanced dynamic code evolution capabilities. The new version, HotWave2, now supports most AspectJ constructs, including around() advice and static cross-cutting. We will demonstrate both the enhanced Mantisse GUI builder as well as HotWave2, weaving several aspects for dynamic analysis in sizable applications at runtime.

Through the design and implementation of a JVM that supports Pluggable Verification Modules (PVMs), the idea of an extensible protection mechanism is entertained. Link-time bytecode verification becomes a pluggable service that can be readily replaced, reconfigured and augmented. Application-specific verification services can be safely introduced into the dynamic linking process of the JVM. This feature is enabled by the adoption of a previously proposed modular verification architecture, Proof Linking [23, 24], which decouples bytecode verification from the dynamic linking process, rendering the verifier a replaceable module. The PVM mechanism has been implemented in an open source JVM, the Aegis VM [21]. To evaluate the software engineering and security engineering benefits of this extensible protection mechanism, an augmented type system JAC (java Access Control) [37] has been successfully implemented as a PVM.

SPEQvm2008 is a new benchmark program suite for measuring client-side java runtime environment. It replaces JVM98, which has been used for the same purpose for more than ten years. It consists of 38 benchmark programs grouped into eleven categories and has wide variety of workloads from computation-intensive kernels to XML file processors. In this paper, we present the results of running SPECjvm2008 on three machines that have CPUs with the same microarchitecture and different cache sizes and clock speeds. The result of measurements include instruction and data cache reference and miss rates, and the effect of the multi-threading. We relate these workload parameters to the SPECjvm2008 performance metrics. Roughly speaking, an L2 cache of IMB sufficiently lows the cache miss rates of SPECjvm2008 and compared to the single-core, 1.5 to 2 times speed-ups are achieved by dual-core executions.
