Software Defined Networking (SDN) is seen as one way to solve some problems of the Internet including security, managing complexity, multi-casting, load balancing, and energy efficiency. SDN is an architectural paradigm that separates the control plane of a networking device (e.g., a switch / router) from its data plane, making it feasible to control, monitor, and manage a network from a centralized node (the SDN controller). However, today there exists many SDN controllers including POX, FloodLight, and OpenDaylight. The question is, which of the controllers is to be selected and used? To find out the answer to this question, a decision making template is proposed in this paper to help researchers choose the SDN controller that best fits their needs. The method works as follows;first, several existing open-source controllers are analyzed to collect their properties. For selecting the suitable controller based on the derived requirements (for example, a "java" interface must be provided by the controller), a matching mechanism is used to compare the properties of the controllers with the requirements. Additionally, for selecting the best controller based on optional requirements (for example, GUI will be extremely preferred over the age of the controller), a Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) method named Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) has been adapted by a monotonic interpolation / extrapolation mechanism which maps the values of the properties to a value in a pre-defined scale. By using the adapted AHP, the topmost five controllers have been compared and "Ryu" is selected to be the best controller based on our requirements.

One of the basic requirements when managing moving objects in data stream management systems (DSMS) is visualization of continuous queries results on the map. In most cases, the result of a continuous query is data stream whose elements contains information about locations of moving objects so that we are talking about visualization of streaming trajectories. Such visualization involves redrawing the location of moving objects for each new arriving element of data stream that represents the result of a continuous query. In this paper we present an application that allows you to pose continuous queries and visualize their results in OCEANUS DSMS prototype for managing spatio-temporal data streams. The application is based on the java programming language, swingx-ws library for interacting with web services and OpenStreetMap web service that provides free maps of the world. The application allows users familiar with CSQL to pose queries directly using this query language, while beginners can pose a query through creating the conditions by selecting one or more operations from a set of basic operations on moving objects. In addition to presenting current positions of each moving object which satisfies the condition of continuous query it is also enabled to view the entire trajectory of a moving object.

In this paper, we present the design of a novel multicore simulator called ParTejas. It is a fast shared memory based parallel simulator written in java. Unlike recently released parallel simulators that mainly rely on sampling, high level models, and highly relaxed synchronization, we primarily rely on novel concurrent data structures. In specific, we use a lock free parallel slot scheduler for synchronizing the accesses of multiple threads at a shared resource, and we use flexible barriers known as phasers to relax synchronization within bounds. We leverage additional language specific features of java, and demonstrate a mean speedup of 11. 8X (simulation speed of 4-8 MIPS) with 64 threads for a suite of Splash2 and Parsec benchmarks.

Android provides native development kit through JNI for developing high-performance applications (or simply apps). Although recent years have witnessed a considerable increase in the number of apps employing native libraries, only a few systems can examine them. However, none of them scrutinizes the interactions through JNI in them. In this paper, we conduct a systematic study on tracking information flows through JNI in apps. More precisely, we first perform a large-scale examination on apps using JNI and report interesting observations. Then, we identify scenarios where information flows uncaught by existing systems can result in information leakage. Based on these insights, we propose and implement NDroid, an efficient dynamic taint analysis system for checking information flows through JNI. The evaluation through real apps shows NDroid can effectively identify information leaks through JNI with low performance overheads.

java provides a synchronized construct for multi-core programming with many workloads. However, naive use of the synchronized construct causes performance scalability problems due to lock contention. One of the sources of lock contentions is a synchronized collection class. There are known concurrency code patterns to alleviate lock contentions such as a Concurrent Collection (CC), Read-Write Lock (RWL), and Double-Checked Locking (DCL). To date, there is no algorithm to transform a program using DCL. This paper describes steps on how to rewrite synchronized blocks using DCL.

Lecture capture is a term referring both to learning materials based on recordings of live lectures as well as software and hardware support systems enabling lecture recording and reproduction. As lecture captures are today becoming more and more valued learning materials, there is a strong need for quality yet simple to use lecture capture systems supporting their creation. In this paper we describe a software solution for rich lecture capture recording and reproduction. LeCTo, an application developed to maximize lecture capture learning potentials and simplify lecture capturing process is presented through its functionality as well as problems and solutions encountered during its implementation.

Virtual teams of programmers are a popular form of collaboration both in Open Source, and commercial software projects. In OSS (Open Source Software) projects, programmers make their own decision which project to join, and, therefore, the process of task allocation among the project members is emergent. In this paper, we attempt to simulate such a process based on available data from GitHub. The simulation is used to test a hypothesis regarding the efficiency of emergent task allocation. In general, we find performance of coordinated methods to be better than emergent algorithms, which leads us to conclusion that controlling team membership through invitations and work assignment is a promising direction.

Modern software uses frameworks through their Application programming Interfaces (APIs). Framework APIs may change while frameworks evolve. Client programs have to upgrade to new releases of frameworks if security vulnerabilities are discovered in the used releases. Patching security vulnerabilities can be delayed by non-security-related API changes when the frameworks used by client programs are not up to date. Keeping frameworks updated can reduce the reaction time to patch security leaks. Client program upgrades are not cost-free, developers need to understand the API usages in client programs and API changes between framework releases before conduct upgrading tasks. In this paper, we propose a tool ACUA to generate reports containing detailed API change and usage information by analyzing the binary code of both frameworks and clients programs written in java. Developers can use the API change and usage reports generated by ACUA to estimate the work load and decide when to starting upgrading client programs based on the estimation.

Clone detection has been an active area for decades and many tools have been proposed. Existing researches show that in traditional software clones achieve to 13%-20%, and the clone rate in Web Application area may be higher. In this paper, we propose an improved method for code clone detection. Our approach is based on the randomized kd-trees with dimensionality reduction to cluster the characteristic vectors. We have implemented our algorithm and tested it on large software projects written in java and PHP including JDK and 7 Web applications. Our experimental results show that our tool is efficiency both in speed and accuracy. In addition, we conducted empirical studies on Web applications and find that the cloned rates achieve to 5-82% in PHP Web Applications.
