The purpose of this research is to search for the best (highest performing) risk profile of agents who successively choose among risky prospects. An agent's risk profile is his attitude to perceived risk, which can vary from risk preferring to risk neutral (an expected-value decision maker) to risk averse. We use the Genetic Algorithm to search in the complex stochastic space of repeated lotteries. We find that agents with a CARA utility function learn to possess risk-neutral risk profiles. Since CARA utility functions are wealth-independent, this is not surprising. When agents have wealth-dependent, CRRA utility functions, however, they also learn to possess risk profiles that are about risk neutral (from slightly risk-averse to even slightly risk-preferring), which is surprising.

Traditional java Enterprise Edition(EE)-based application servers are powerful, but complex solutions requiring a comparably high administration effort and a steep learning curve to be used efficiently. However, e.g. for java-based web development education a more easy-to-use platform is desired. In addition, to design a future PaaS cloud environment for education a lightweight, highly scalable and ressource-efficient platform is required. Therefore, in this paper a solution for building an easy-to-use, lightweight application server environment for hosting PHP or java EE-based web applications is proposed, which is based on open source software (OSS) components. Evaluation results for the proposed solution with respect to its practical use in a classroom setting as well as its performance and scalability are presented. These results indicate that the approach is promising regarding its ease-of-use by students and even outperformes an established java EE application server with respect to response time.

The presented OptInv software system provides support for inventory and sales optimization. Generally, small and medium enterprises cannot afford expensive Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, with effective supply management modules. Supplies are often managed based only on former experience. Inconvenient situations can occur when an order cannot be accomplished because the needed product is missing, or when the money invested in some products becomes a waste. Using the right methods and tools, these problems can be eliminated. The aim of the OptInv project is to provide a Software as a Service (SaaS) solution for this kind of problems. OptInv imports data from accounting software systems and provides statistics about products, providers and sales. Products can be categorized, the value of the stock can be estimated, the consumption can be predicted and in this way the inventory can be optimized.

By analyzing historical information from Source Code Management systems, previous research has observed that certain methods tend to change together consistently. Co-change has been identified as a good predictor of the entities that are likely to be affected by a change, which ones might be missing modifications, and which ones might change in the future. However, existing co-change analysis provides no insight on why methods consistently co-change. Being able to identify the rationale that explains co-changes could allow to document and enforce design knowledge. This paper proposes an automatic approach to derive the reason behind a co-change. We define the reason of a (set) of co-changes as a set of properties common to the elements that co-change. We consider two kinds of properties: structural properties which indicate explicit dependencies, and semantic properties which reveal implicit dependencies. Then we attempt to identify the reasons behind single commits, as well as the reasons behind co-changes that repeatedly affect the same set of methods. These sets of methods are identified by clustering methods that tend to be modified in the same commit-transactions. We perform our analysis over the history of two open-source systems, analyzing nearly 19.000 methods and over 3700 commits. We show that it is possible to automatically extract explanations for co-changes, that the quality of such explanations improves when structural and semantic properties are taken into account, and when the methods analyzed co-change recurrently.

This paper reports initial research results related to the use of locality-sensitive hashing (LSH) for string-based matching of big ontologies. Two ways of transforming the matching problem into a LSH problem are proposed and experimental results are reported. The performed experiments show that using LSH for ontology matching could lead to a very fast matching process. The quality of the alignment achieved in these experiments is comparable to state-of-the-art matchers, but much faster. Further research is needed to find out whether the use of different metrics or specific hardware would improve the results.

A number of studies have evaluated the impact of modularizing the exception handling concern using aspectoriented programming (AOP). Even though some of these studies have claimed that reuse through AOP is possible and advantageous in some cases, they have not focused specifically on reuse, often using the overall number of lines of code as a proxy for it. This has produced often contradictory results that are difficult to understand and extrapolate. In this paper we describe a study whose goal is to answer the question in the title of the paper. We have extracted exception handlers from 10 distinct applications to AspectJ aspects and, whenever possible, reused the handlers that were duplicated throughout each application. We have also collected a number of metrics from these systems and analyzed whether there is a relationship between the exception handling strategies that an application employs and the extent to which handlers implementing them are reusable. We discuss some scenarios and complicating factors related to reuse and present solutions that we have found to circumvent these complications. We also analyze limitations of current AspectJ constructs.

The ever increasing complexity of scientific applications has led to utilization of new HPC paradigms such as Graphical Processing Units (GPUs). However, modifying existing applications to enable them to be executed on GPU can be challenging. Furthermore, the considerable speedup achieved by execution of linear algebra operations on GPUs has added a huge heterogeneity to HPC clusters. In this work, we enabled NPAIRS, a neuro-imaging application, to be executed on GPU with slight modifications to its original code. This important feature of our implementation enables current users of NPAIRS, i.e. non-expert bio-medical scientists, to get benefit from GPU without having to apply fundamental changes to their existing application. As the second part of our research, we investigated the efficiency of several scheduling algorithms for a heterogeneous cluster that contains GPU nodes. Experimental results show that we achieved 7x speedup for NPAIRS. Moreover, although scheduling does not play an important role when there is no GPU node in the cluster, it can highly improve the makespan for a CPU-GPU cluster. We compared our scheduling results with Torque and MCT, two of the most commonly used schedulers in current HPC platforms. Our results show that the Sufferage scheduling can improve the makespan of Torque and MCT by 47% and 4% respectively.

This tool demonstration paper presents CERTICSys as a software platform to fully support process assessment using CERTICS Methodology. CERTICS is a methodology for assessment and certification of software resulting from technological development and innovation carried out in Brazil. A CERTICS assessment examines the process performed to develop and commercialize the software. CERTICS Process Assessment Method follows ISO/IEC 15504 Standard. It is composed of six phases: Exploration, Agreement, Preparation, Visit, Validation and Conclusion. CERTICSys is a web based software platform that supports all six phases. CERTICSys uses a Service-oriented Architecture (SOA) with a Business Process Management Suite (BPMS) that implements the assessment method. java and javaScritp are used in the client-side. This set of technologies and software tools are fully implemented in a cloud infrastructure.

Static analysis tools such as bug pattern tools are useful to detect bugs early in software development. However, existing tools sometimes yield so many warnings that developers tend to ignore such warnings. To deal with this problem, we propose a gamified tool for motivating developers to remove such warnings. Our tool employs the gamification technique that calculates points by counting removed warnings with respect to each developer and each team. The points give developers feedback and urge them to compete with each other. We confirmed that developers removed about 150% warnings with our tool in comparison with the case where they did not use our tool through an experiment.

java-enabled smart cards are used in different fields of application, such as access control, electronic banking, and passports. On these cards, a standardized virtual machine runs, which protects the security-critical code and data using a sandbox model. Unfortunately, this sandbox can be circumvented by fault attacks, which corrupt the data on which the virtual machine operates. The fault emulation environment of this work enables the user to configure faults at definable java applet code locations. The user specifies which java code she wants to attack but does not need to provide any information on where these data are placed in the memory and when the memory is accessed. To enable this approach, our environment monitors the virtual machine during the applet execution to receive the information which java code is currently executed and which security-critical memory regions are in use. Then, the faults are injected using a bus saboteur at the correct clock cycle and memory location. This generic high-level approach provides the environment user an abstraction of the internal states of the virtual machine and the emulated hardware. Therefore, our environment enables the recreation of currently known attacks and allows us to study the effects of fault attacks on the virtual-machine behavior. The concept was successfully evaluated by a java wallet case study. This case study shows a speedup of 6,600 compared to a simulation.
