An investigation of cross-national differences in positivity and job satisfaction

The present research examined the role of national differences in positivity as an explanation of cross-national variation in job satisfaction (JS) ratings. National positivity values were derived from a sample of current employees by calculating the mean residual in a regression of global JS on mean facet satisfaction ratings. As predicted, the positivity values derived in the present research showed convergent validity with other indices of nation-level positivity, and national differences in extraversion. National differences in positivity showed significant incremental associations with national differences in JS ratings after controlling for the effects of acquiescence, perceived differences in working conditions, and national development. Theoretical and practical implications of the results are discussed.

MapReduce is a distributed processing algorithm which breaks up large problem sets into small pieces, such that a large cluster of computers can work on those small pieces in an efficient, timely manner. MapReduce was created and popularized by Google, and is widely used as a means of processing large amounts of textual data for the purpose of indexing it for search later on. This paper examines the feasibility of using smart mobile devices in a MapReduce system by exploring several areas, including quantifying the contribution they make to computation throughput, end-user participation, power consumption, and security. The proposed MapReduce System over Heterogeneous Mobile Devices consists of three key components: a server component that coordinates and aggregates results, a mobile device client for iPhone, and a traditional client for reference and to obtain baseline data. A prototypical research implementation demonstrates that it is indeed feasible to leverage smart mobile devices in heterogeneous MapReduce systems, provided certain conditions are understood and accepted. MapReduce systems could see sizable gains of processing throughput by incorporating as many mobile devices as possible in such a heterogeneous environment. Considering the massive number of such devices available and in active use today, this is a reasonably attainable goal and represents an exciting area of study. This paper introduces relevant background material, discusses related work, describes the proposed system, explains obtained results, and finally, discusses topics for further research in this area.

Although some studies have been conducted in knapsack cryptosystems, it is not necessarily easy to generate keys in public-key cryptosystem. There are few open, scalability and easy to use systems. For web usage, programs written in java script have high transparency and scalability, and are very suitable for cryptosytems. This paper provides the necessary systems to generate keys, encrypt and decrypt in knapsack cryptosytem, which can be applied to most knapsack PKC by simply defining some functions including generating secret keys, translating into public keys and others. This paper also provides two examples, Merkle-Hellman and shifted odd knapsack PKC.

The emergence and wide adoption of web applications have moved the client-side component, often written in javascript, to the forefront of computing on the web. Web application developers try to move more computation to the client side to avoid unnecessary network traffic and make the applications more responsive. Therefore, javascript applications are becoming larger and more computation intensive. Trace-based just-in-time compilation have been proposed to address the performance bottleneck in these applications. In this paper, we exploit the extra processing power in multicore systems to further improve the performance of trace-based execution of javascript programs. In trace-based engines, a considerable portion of execution time is spent on running guards which are operations inserted in the native code to check if the properties assumed by the compiled code actually hold during execution. We introduce ParaGuard to off-load these guards to another thread, while speculatively executing the main trace. In a manner similar to what happens in current trace-based JITs, if a check fails, ParaGuard aborts the native trace execution and reverts back to interpreting the javascript bytecode. We also propose several optimizations including guard branch aggregation and profile-based snapshot elimination to further improve the performance of our technique. We show that ParaGuard can achieve an average of 15% performance improvement over current trace-based compilers using an extra processor on commodity multicore processors.

In this paper we propose a simple solution for the problem of providing additional functionality for web content apart from what a typical web browser provides by default. There are multiple solutions such as browser plugins which are installed separately and have their own lifecycle. Some browsers provide custom java script objects to access additional functionality by embedding precompiled javascript and native code. In this research we find out an application layer approach to add and expose additional functionality into a chromium engine based browser. The functionality is exposed as very generic extension to BOM/DOM APIs, so that the content developers do not have to deal with customized object names which vary from browser vendor to vendor. This BOM/DOM extension also helps the browser vendors in reducing dependence on out of the box plugin installations at the same time make content development easy with typical javascript or other UI libraries. As part of same research we find out typical execution time for executing various API calls, which can help architects and designers in designing such a system with optimal performance needed for their respective web applications.

Increased focus on java script performance has resulted in vast performance improvements for many benchmarks. However, for actual code used in websites, the attained improvements often lag far behind those for popular benchmarks. This paper shows that the main reason behind this shortfall is how the compiler understands types. java script has no concept of types, but the compiler assigns types to objects anyway for ease of code generation. We examine the way that the Chrome V8 compiler defines types, and identify two design decisions that are the main reasons for the lack of improvement: (1) the inherited prototype object is part of the current object's type definition, and (2) method bindings are also part of the type definition. These requirements make types very unpredictable, which hinders type specialization by the compiler. Hence, we modify V8 to remove these requirements, and use it to compile the java script code assembled by JSBench from real websites. On average, we reduce the execution time of JSBench by 36%, and the dynamic instruction count by 49%.

We investigate parallelizing flow- and context-sensitive static analysis for javascript. Previous attempts to parallelize such analyses for other languages typically start with the traditional framework of sequential dataflow analysis, and then propose methods to parallelize the existing sequential algorithms within this framework. However, we show that this approach is non-optimal and propose a new perspective on program analysis based on abstract interpretation that separates the analysis into two components: (1) an embarrassingly parallel state exploration of a state transition system;and (2) a separate component that controls the size of the state space by selectively merging states, thus injecting sequential dependencies into the system. This perspective simplifies the parallelization problem and exposes useful opportunities to exploit the natural parallelism of the analysis. We apply our insights to parallelize a javascript abstract interpreter. Because of javascript's dynamic nature and tricky semantics, static analysis of javascript is difficult to scale-one of our benchmarks with only 2.8 KLOC takes over 22 hours to analyze using the sequential javascript abstract interpreter. Thus, javascript is an excellent case study for the benefits of our approach. Our resulting parallel implementation sees significant benefits on real-world javascript programs, with speedups between 2-4x on average with a superlinear maximum of 36.9x on 12 hardware threads.

Dynamic languages such as javascript are the de-facto standard for web applications. However, generating efficient code for dynamically-typed languages is a challenge, because it requires frequent dynamic type checks. Our analysis has shown that some programs spend upwards of 20% of dynamic instructions doing type checks, and 12.9% on average. In this paper we propose Checked Load, a low-complexity architectural extension that replaces software-based, dynamic type checking. Checked Load is comprised of four new ISA instructions that provide flexible and automatic type checks for memory operations, and whose implementation requires minimal hardware changes. We also propose hardware support for dynamic type prediction to reduce the cost of failed type checks. We show how to use Checked Load in the Nitro javascript just-in-time compiler (used in the Safari 5 browser). Speedups on a typical mobile processor range up to 44.6% (with a mean of 11.2%) in popular javascript benchmarks. While we have focused our work on javascript, Checked Load is sufficiently general to support other dynamically-typed languages, such as Python or Ruby.
