The increasing number of cellular users and the demand for broadband mobile communications (3rd and 4th generation) raises the problem of bandwidth availability and the associated channel allocation strategies. Moreover, Quality of Service (QoS) is the challenge for such modern wireless multimedia telecommunications. This paper presents new algorithms for efficient bandwidth management of GSM cellular multimedia systems. Besides, it proposes a comprehensive simulation system for evaluating channel assignment schemes in QoS multimedia cellular systems incorporating their principles, entities and concepts involved. The proposed system is implemented in java, in order to create an educational generic simulation environment with the future capability of internetworking. The system is designed with the goal to be efficient in simulating large scale generic cellular multimedia telecommunication systems.

Konrad Zuse's Z3, built in Berlin from 1938 to 1941, was destroyed during World War II. The reconstruction project started in 1994. A functional replica was built and unveiled at a conference commemorating the 60th anniversary of the public presentation of the original machine in 2001. The reconstruction project includes several java simulations of components of the whole machine and a 3D functional simulation of the Z3 and its user console.

This paper introduces an application of electrical engineering principles and object-oriented approach in the design of a java-based circuit design and analysis system. The system is called javaCirc, which is an analog circuit simulator that analyzes the steady-state values of electrical circuits. Wire, resistors, capacitors, inductors, independent as well as dependent sources, and grounds make up basic building blocks in using javaCirc to design circuits. Nodal analysis, Ohm's law, Kirchoff's laws and Cramer's Rule underlie the design of circuit analysis features of the new system, In addition, javaCirc includes a Graphical User Interface (GUI) that allows the user to draw analog circuits on a computerized "drawing board". This GUI makes it possible to graph the steady-state solutions and witness the transient progression towards these values. The entire javaCirc system is written in java. For this paper, the circuit equivalent for the Tacoma Narrows Bridge is created and used to explore javaCirc's capabilities.

Astronomy is among the most popular courses that students select to fulfill their college science requirement at Queensborough Community College, New York City. Recent advances in photonics now enable us to observe celestial objects from extrasolar planets to ultra deep space galaxies that are 13 billion light years away. These results are regularly reported in the popular press such as the New York Times and "Sky & Telescope" magazine. We upgraded our astronomy course to keep pace with these advances in optics and photonics. The laboratory hands-on exercises include observations in our observatory using a telescope with digital camera and CCD, spectrum analysis with grating, java photonics simulation delivered over the Internet, and the use of virtual instruments in optics and photonics written with Labview. Advanced techniques such as interferometry are also included as demonstrations in the laboratory. The scientific principles were demonstrated to them to promote learning by inquiry. As a result of these teaching designs, the students gain a clearer understanding of the optics and photonics basis of the astronomical instrumentation reported in popular articles. The preliminary assessment was encouraging as measured by the number of questions received and the amount of popular press materials that the students brought to the classroom.
