In runtime system visual area modeling, we model it by building the GUI component of runtime system and refining the processes of three different kinds of instruction execution.

We present a combinatorial interaction testing approach to perform validation testing of a fundamental component for the security of java Cards: the byte code verifier. Combinatorial testing of all states of the java Card virtual machine has been adopted as the coverage criteria. We developed a formal model of the java Card byte code syntax to enable the combinatorial enumeration of well-formed states, and a formal model of the byte code semantic rules to be able to distinguish between well-typed and ill-typed ones, and to derive actual test programs from them. A complete framework has been implemented, enabling fully automated application and evaluation of the conformance tests to any verifier implementation.

This paper gives out a novel way, TCFI4J, to enforce the control flow integrity to the java applications based on java virtual machine. TCFI4J combines the trusted computing technology and java virtual machine together. It takes full advantage of the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) and gives full consideration to the memory organization of the JVM. TCFI4J takes the integrity of part of JVM's memory image into account for the control flow integrity enforcement. The method presented in this paper can provide the user information about an application's behavior. It can significantly improve the security of a java application with a tolerable performance impact.

The combination of low-level network data acquisition and higher-level frameworks results in more powerful and efficient network analysis and surveillance systems and opens up new possibilities for leveraging low-level network traffic data. There is, however, a gap between low-level network traffic data acquisition techniques and higher-level frameworks. This gap complicates the integration of low-level tools into higher-level frameworks. In this paper, we exemplarily research the feasibility of bridging this gap. As example, we use the integration of low-level packet capturing with java-based higher-level implementations. To assess the practicability, we created a prototype implementation and performed extensive performance measurements. The results show that our java-based prototype is capable of capturing and processing network traffic in near real-time at Gigabit Ethernet speed on consumerclass commodity hardware.

A 64-bit RISC processor is designed for large applications that need large memory address. Due to the restriction of the instruction fixed length, loading a 64-bit address needs a number of instructions, leading to a penalty both of memory performance and memory consumption. This paper describes an address computation method based on hardware and software co-design. In our extended MIPS processor which supports register + register addressing, we achieve an approximate effect of memory access as their 32-bit counterparts;we propose a software load-address method, which simplifies the calculation of 64-bit address. We implement our methods in the 64-bit OpenJDK 6 on MIPS, and give both performance and consumption comparisons for SPECjvm2008 and Dacapo. The experimental results show that the performance of SPECjvm2008 is improved by 5.1%, the performance of Dacapo is improved by 7.3% and near to 24% for some benchmarks. The size of method generated by JVM compiler is reduced by an average of 13%.

Efficient Hosted Interpreters on the JVM

Many guest languages are implemented using the java virtual machine (JVM) as a host environment. There are two major implementation choices: custom compilers and so-called hosted interpreters. Custom compilers are complex to build but offer good performance. Hosted interpreters are comparatively simpler to implement but until now have suffered from poor performance. We studied the performance of hosted interpreters and identified common bottlenecks preventing their efficient execution. First, similar to interpreters written in C/C++, instruction dispatch is expensive on the JVM. Second, java's semantics require expensive runtime exception checks that negatively affect array performance essential to interpreters. We present two optimizations targeting these bottlenecks and show that the performance of optimized interpreters increases dramatically: we report speedups by a factor of up to 2.45 over the Jython interpreter, 3.57 over the Rhino interpreter, and 2.52 over the JRuby interpreter, respectively. The resulting performance is comparable with that of custom compilers. Our optimizations are enabled by a few simple annotations that require only modest implementation effort;in return, performance increases substantially.

JGroovy: An alternative approach to implement extensible java compiler

The main reason for the invention of computer programming languages is for these languages to express a command-to-control machine behavior. Some of these programming languages have specific advantages that are used in specific environments such as structured query language (SQL), hypertext markup language (HTML), and spreadsheet. The common definitions of these languages are domain-specific languages (DSLs). Although DSLs are the best way to deal with specific systems, it is hard to use with other environments or platforms. Groovy is a dynamic programming language that runs on the java virtual machine. Groovy has some features that allow programmers to manage DSLs within its unique style. Groovy has some disadvantages because it does not support all java features and syntax while also producing unnecessary byte code during compilation. This paper proposes an extended-architecture technique to implement a computer programming language and compiler through extending java with Groovy language. The extensible language is called JGroovy'. And JGroovy is supported both by java and Groovy language. We implement the compiler for JGroovy and call it the JGroovy compiler' (JGC). By its extended architecture, JGC is more compatible for java source code than javac can claim to be. And it also produces a better and more compact byte code than the Groovy compiler, with an approximate improvement of 8-12%. (c) 2013 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan. Parametric polymorphism enables code reuse and type safety. Underneath the uniform interface exposed to programmers, however, its low level implementation has to cope with inherently non-uniform data: value types of different sizes and semantics (bytes, integers, floating point numbers) and reference types (pointers to heap objects). On the java virtual machine, parametric polymorphism is currently translated to bytecode using two competing approaches: homogeneous and heterogeneous. Homogeneous translation requires boxing, and thus introduces indirect access delays. Heterogeneous translation duplicates and adapts code for each value type individually, producing more bytecode. Therefore bytecode speed and size are at odds with each other. This paper proposes a novel translation that significantly reduces the bytecode size without affecting the execution speed. The key insight is that larger value types (such as integers) can hold smaller ones (such as bytes) thus reducing the duplication necessary in heterogeneous translations. In our implementation, on the Scala compiler, we encode all primitive value types in long integers. The resulting bytecode approaches the performance of monomorphic code, matches the performance of the heterogeneous translation and obtains speedups of up to 22x over the homogeneous translation, all with modest increases in size.

Dependence analysis is a fundamental technique for program understanding and is widely used in software testing and debugging. However, there are a limited number of analysis tools available despite a wide range of research work in this field. In this paper, we present javaPDG(1), a static analyzer for java bytecode, which is capable of producing various graphical representations such as the system dependence graph, procedure dependence graph, control flow graph and call graph. As a program-dependence-graph based analyzer, javaPDG performs both intra- and inter-procedural dependence analysis, and enables researchers to apply a wide range of program analysis techniques that rely on dependence analysis. javaPDG provides a graphical viewer to browse and analyze the various graphs and a convenient JSON based serialization format.
