SPECjvm2008 is a new benchmark program suite for measuring client-side java runtime environments. It replaces JVM98, which has been used for the same purpose for more than ten years. It consists of 38 benchmark programs grouped into eleven categories and has wide variety of workloads from computation-intensive kernels to XML file processors. In this paper, we will compare two proprietary java virtual machines (JVMs), HotSpot of Sun Microsystems and JRockit of Oracle, using SPECjvm2008 on three platforms that have CPUs with the same microarchitecture but different clock speed and cache hierarchies. The wide variations of the SPECjvm2008 benchmark categories, together with the differences in hardware configurations of the platforms, reveal the strong and weak points of each JVM implementation. In the composite SPECjvm2008 performance metrics, JRockit performs 19 to 27% better than HotSpot. This is the results of JRockit's outperforming HotSpot in nine out of eleven categories. However, JRockit is quite weak in JVM initialization as it is revealed from the executions of startup. helloworld;the relative performance of JRockit can be as low as 19% of HotSpot. Another remarkable result is, JRockit runs scimark. monte_carlo much faster (up to 285% of HotSpot) which affects the performance metrics of three categories. The relatively higher performances of JRockit on non-startup benchmarks likely to be the differences in number of x86 instructions executed in JVMs, with exceptions in compiler.* benchmarks. In startup.* benchmarks, the performance differences should also be due to the numbers of x86 instructions executed, but their effects widely vary from benchmark to benchmark.

As applications for small embedded mobile devices are getting larger and more complex, it becomes inevitable to adopt more advanced software engineering methods from the field of desktop application development. Aspect-oriented programming (AOP) is a promising approach due to its advanced modularization capabilities. However, existing AOP languages tend to add a substantial overhead in both execution time and code size which restricts their practicality for small devices with limited resources. In this paper, we present optimizations for aspect-oriented mechanisms at the level of the virtual machine. Our experiments show that these optimizations yield a considerable performance gain along with a reduction of the code size. Thus, our optimizations establish the base for using advanced aspect-oriented modularization techniques for developing java applications on small embedded devices.

A large array of privacy sensitive applications like banking servers, medical records processors, and legal software are java applications. Preserving user privacy is a necessary feature in such applications. For example, in a medical records system, only the authorized doctors and medical staff should be allowed access to patient information. Decentralized Information Flow Control (DIFC) [10] provides an effective means for preserving user privacy. In a traditional setup where the java virtual machine (JVM) runs on top of an Operating System (OS), sensitive information flows both through the JVM and the OS, and effective enforcement of information flow policies requires tracking data across both these entities [12]. Implementing information flow control in such systems requires modification, and subsequent auditing, of both the JVM and OS source code.

Dynamic aspect-oriented programming (AOP) enables runtime adaptation of aspects, which is important for building sophisticated, aspect-based software engineering tools, such as adaptive profilers or debuggers that dynamically modify instrumentation code in response to user interactions. Today, many AOP frameworks for java, notably AspectJ, focus on aspect weaving at compile-time or at load-time, and offer only limited support for aspect adaptation and reweaving at runtime. In this paper, we introduce HotWave, an AOP framework based on AspectJ for standard java virtual machines (JVMs). HotWave supports dynamic (re) weaving of previously loaded classes, and it ensures that all classes loaded in a JVM can be (re) woven, including the classes of the standard java class library. HotWave features a novel mechanism for inter-advice communication, enabling efficient data passing between advices that are woven into the same method. We explain HotWave's programming model and discuss our implementation techniques. As case study, we present an adaptive, aspect-based profiler that leverages HotWave's distinguishing features.

Developing tools for profiling, debugging, testing, and reverse engineering is error-prone, time-consuming, and therefore costly when using low-level techniques, such as bytecode instrumentation. As a solution to these problems, we promote tool development in java using high-level aspect-oriented programming (AOP). We demonstrate that the use of aspects yields compact tools that are easy to develop and extend. As enabling technology, we rely on HotWave, a new tool for dynamic and comprehensive aspect weaving. HotWave reconciles compatibility with existing virtual machine and AOP technologies. It provides support for runtime adaptation of aspects and reweaving of previously loaded code, as well as the ability to weave aspects into all methods executing in a java virtual machine, including methods in the standard java class library. HotWave also features a new mechanism for efficiently passing data between advices that are woven into the same method. We demonstrate the benefits of HotWave's distinguishing features with two case studies in the area of profiling.

While managed languages such as C# and java have become quite popular in enterprise computing, they are still considered unsuitable for hard real-time systems. In particular, the presence of garbage collection has been a sore point for their acceptance for low-level system programming tasks. Real-time extensions to these languages have the dubious distinction of, at the same time, eschewing the benefits of high-level programming and failing to offer competitive performance. The goal of our research is to explore the limitations of high-level managed languages for real-time systems programming. To this end we target a real-world embedded platform, the LEON3 architecture running the RTEMS real-time operating system, and demonstrate the feasibility of writing garbage collected code in critical parts of embedded systems. We show that java with a concurrent, real-time garbage collector, can have throughput close to that of C programs and comes within 10% in the worst observed case on realistic benchmark. We provide a detailed breakdown of the costs of java features and their execution times and compare to real-time and throughput-optimized commercial java virtual machines.

The paper reveals several inconsistencies of java virtual machine with safe point Garbage Collection, which may incur performance penalties. Two ways of solving these shortcomings are discussed and the most preferable is chosen for implementation. Optimized prototype of Connected Device Configuration virtual machine was benchmarked by the set of java Hartstone experiments, which results confirm advantages of chosen solution. Proposed optimization is highly applicable, transparent and simple to understand.

virtual machines have been increasingly used in embedded and mobile devices. Limited processing power and energy resources become a major challenge for modern virtual machines. The traditional virtual machines running on server computers also face the similar requirement to reduce energy dissipation. To address these challenges, a number of research works have been done in the area of energy-oriented dynamic optimization in java virtual machines (JVM). Some of them focus on virtual machine directed hardware optimizations, while others exploit pure software approaches on virtual machine or compiler to reduce energy consumption. Additionally, client/server framework among multiple processors is also used to offload power-consuming tasks from low-power devices. This paper surveys the current progress of energy-oriented dynamic optimizations in JVMs.

Application-specific hardware accelerators can significantly improve a system's performance. In a java-based system, we then have to consider a hybrid architecture that consists of a java virtual machine running on a general-purpose processor connected to the hardware accelerator. In such a hybrid architecture, data communication between the accelerator and the general-purpose processor can incur a significant cost, which may even annihilate the original performance improvement of adding the accelerator. A careful layout of the data in the memory structure is therefore of major importance to maintain the acceleration performance benefits. This article addresses the reduction of the communication cost in a distributed shared memory consisting of the main memory of the processor and the accelerator's local memory, which are unified in the java heap. Since memory access times are highly nonuniform, a suitable allocation of objects in either main memory or the accelerator's local memory can significantly reduce the communication cost. We propose several techniques for finding the optimal location for each java object's data, either statically through profiling or dynamically at runtime. We show how we can reduce communication cost by up to 86% for the SPECjvm and DaCapo benchmarks. We also show that the best strategy is application dependent and also depends on the relative cost of remote versus local accesses. For a relative cost higher than 10, a self-learning dynamic approach often results in the best performance.

java is dominating in object-oriented computing. However, java relies on java virtual machine to process java bytecodes, such that it imposes large overhead on the embedded system. In addition, as security is always a major concern in most of the networked computer systems, embedded systems should provide security features to defend against attacks. Many viruses use the security loopholes to trigger attack, such as buffer overflow attack. This paper proposes an object-oriented processor with Just-In-Time compilation support to execute java program effectively and to protect the system. The system realizes the inherent security features of java in the core architecture to enhance the overall system security.
