Fork/join applications are divide-and-conquer algorithms recursively forking tasks that are executed in parallel, waiting for them to complete, and then typically joining their results. An efficient fork/join application maximizes parallelism while minimizing overheads, and maximizes locality while minimizing contention. However, there is no unique optimal implementation that best resolves such tradeoffs and failing in balancing them may lead to fork/join applications suffering from several issues (e.g., suboptimal forking, load imbalance, excessive synchronization), possibly compromising the benefits of task-parallel execution. Moreover, there is a lack of profilers enabling performance analysis of a fork/join application. As a result, developers are often required to implement their own tools to analyze fork/join applications, which could be time-consuming, error-prone, and is often beyond the expertise of the developer. In this paper, we present FJProf, a novel profiler which accurately collects runtime metrics to allow characterizing several performance attributes specific to a fork/join application running on a single java virtual machine (JVM) in a shared-memory multicore. FJProf reports information and graphics to developers that help them understand the details of any fork/join processing exposed by a parallel application running on the JVM. We show how FJProf supports performance analysis by characterizing a fork/join application from the Renaissance benchmark suite.

To achieve better performance, computer designers employ advanced techniques that shrink feature sizes, lower supply voltage, increase clock rates and memory capacity, and meanwhile modern computers become increasingly vulnerable to soft errors caused by energetic particles, such as alpha particles and neutron strikes. Therefore, fault tolerance evolves into one of the most significant design objectives, especially for embedded systems working under extreme environments, such as space project. Techniques both in hardware and software are presented. Most of these techniques, however, either require extra resources (e.g. redundant component) or cause great performance degradation. In this paper, we propose a novel fault tolerant technique for java virtual machine (JVM) called the warm-JVM rejuvenation, which can proactively correct soft errors. This approach periodically performs JVM rejuvenation during the execution of java applications. The experiments show that our approach can improve the JVM reliability and maintain performance and response time.

In spite of the popularly of java, its slow performance and unpredictable execution characteristics are still some of the most challenging issues faced by designers for real-time applications. In the past, numerous architectural enhancements have been investigated to enhance performance and increase predictability. In this paper, dedicated hardware based enhancements that can complement existing design solutions are presented. To achieve high-performance while maintaining simplicity of design, a nested state controller is used for modelling java instructions. This approach enables ahead of synthesis resource sharing and simplified reuse of functional elements. A hardware based automatic memory management sub-system is also presented that provides virtual pointer based memory access for memory allocations. Along with fixed cycle allocation and fast automatic resizing of memory, the memory controller provides predictable management functions. The paper describes a simple system targeted to the Virtex II Pro FPGA.

We address the problem of tuning the performance of the java virtual machine (JVM) with run-time flags (parameters). We use the HotSpot JVM in our study. As the HotSpot JVM comes with over 600 flags to choose from, selecting a subset manually to maximize performance is infeasible. In prior work, the potential performance improvement is limited by the fact that only a subset of the tunable flags are tuned. We adopt a different approach and present the HotSpot Auto-tuner which considers the entire JVM and the effect of all the flags. To the best of our knowledge, ours is the first auto-tuner for optimizing the performance of the JVM as a whole. We organize the JVM flags into a tree structure by building a flag-hierarchy, which helps us to resolve dependencies on aspects of the JVM such as garbage collector algorithms and JIT compilation, and helps to reduce the configuration search-space. Experiments with the SPECjvm2008 and DaCapo benchmarks show that we could optimize the HotSpot JVM with significant speedup;16 SPECjvm2008 startup programs were improved by an average of 19% with three of them improved dramatically by 63%, 51% and 32% within a maximum tuning time of 200 minutes for each. Based on a minimum tuning time of 200 minutes, average performance improvement for 13 DaCapo benchmark programs is 26% with 42% being the maximum improvement.

virtual threads are a new feature of the java virtual machine (JVM) complementing the regular java threads (called platform threads). virtual threads promise a significant throughput improvement in workloads that make intensive use of blocking operations, but incur performance overheads in CPU-bound workloads, due to the cost of creating and maintaining the data structures associated with them. Hence, the optimal choice between platform and virtual threads depends on application behavior (which can change significantly during the execution) and on the system running the application. This work-in-progress paper proposes a new framework to automatically and adaptively select the type of threads created by an application, switching between platform and virtual threads as the application's behavior changes over time. The framework monitors several metrics of the running application. Based on these metrics, users can specify criteria for deciding when virtual threads should be preferred over platform threads and vice versa. We present a use case on the Eclipse Jetty web server. Our preliminary evaluation shows that the framework selects the thread type yielding the highest throughput depending on the application behavior, without introducing performance drawbacks.

We present HVMTP, a time predictable and portable java virtual machine (JVM) implementation with applications in resource-constrained, hard real-time embedded systems, which implements all levels of the safety critical java (SCJ) specification. Time predictability is achieved by a combination of time-predictable algorithms, exploiting the programming model of the SCJ profile and harnessing static knowledge of the hosted SCJ system. This paper presents HVMTP in terms of its design and capabilities and demonstrates how a complete timing model of the JVM represented as a network of timed automata can be obtained using the tool TETASARTS(JVM). The timing model readily integrates with the rest of the TETASARTS tool set for temporal verification of SCJ systems. We will also show how a complete timing scheme in terms of safe worst-case execution times and best-case execution times of the java bytecodes can be derived from the model. Furthermore, we take a first look at how to support the new java 8 language feature of Lambda expressions in a SCJ context - we look in particular at how the invokedynamic bytecode can be implemented in a time-predictable way and integrated in HVMTP. Current computer systems separate main memory from storage. Programming languages typically reflect this distinction using different representations for data in memory (e. g. data structures, objects) and storage (e. g. files, databases). Moving data back and forth between these different layers and representations compromise both programming and execution efficiency. Recent non- volatile memory technologies, such as Phase-Change Memory, Resistive RAM, and Magnetoresistive RAM make it possible to collapse main memory and storage into a single layer of persistent memory, opening the way for simpler and more efficient programming abstractions for handling persistence. This Ph. D. thesis introduces a design for the runtime environment for languages with automatic memory management, based on an original combination of orthogonal persistence, persistent memory programming, persistence by reachability, and lock-based failure-atomic transactions. Such design can significantly increase programming and execution efficiency, as in-memory data structures are transparently persistent, without the need for programmatic persistence handling, and removing the need for crossing semantic boundaries. In order to validate and demonstrate the proposed concepts, this work also presents JaphaVM, the first java virtual machine specifically designed for persistent memory. In experimental results using benchmarks and real-world applications, JaphaVM in most cases executed the same operations between one and two orders of magnitude faster than database- and file-based implementations, while requiring significantly less lines of code.

Hardware bytecode translation is a technique to improve the performance of the java virtual machine (JVM), especially on the portable devices for which dynamic compilation is infeasible. However, since the translation is done on a single bytecode basis, it is likely to generate frequent memory accesses for local variables which can be a performance bottleneck. In this paper, we propose to add a small register file to the datapath of the hardware-translation based JVM and use it as a local variable cache. We evaluate the effectiveness of the local variable cache against the size of the local variable cache which determines the chip area overhead and the operating speed. We also discuss the mechanisms for the efficient parameter passing and the on-the-fly profiling. With two types of exceptions, a 16-entry local variable cache achieved hit ratios of 60 to 98 %. The first type of exceptions is represented by the FFT, which accesses more than 16 local variables. In this case, on-the-fly profiling was effective. The hit ratio of 16-entry cache for the FFT was increased from 44 to 83 %. The second type of exception is represented by the SAXON XSLT processor for which cold misses were significant. The proposed parameter passing mechanism turned 6.4 to 13.3 % of total accesses from miss to hit to the local variable cache.

Nowadays, many programming language implementations and programming frameworks target the java virtual machine (JVM). Examples include the java and Scala compilers, Oracle's Truffle framework and the interpreters built on top of it for a variety of dynamic programming languages, as well as big-data frameworks such as Apache Spark, Apache Flink, and Apache Storm. Unfortunately, the JVM provides only limited support for runtime monitoring. The JVM Tool Interface (JVMTI) offers only a very low-level programming model, often introduces high overhead, and does not guarantee proper isolation of the monitoring logic from the observed program. Aspect-Oriented Programming (AOP), in particular AspectJ, is often used to implement runtime monitoring tools. While offering a convenient programming model, the use of such technologies acerbates performance-and isolation-related problems. In this paper, we advocate the use of our dynamic program analysis framework DiSL for runtime monitoring on the JVM. DiSL reconciles an AOP-based programming model, full coverage of all executed bytecodes, optimizations of the monitoring logic, and support for isolation of the monitoring logic. Moreover, DiSL also offers an API to deploy, adapt, and remove monitoring logic at runtime, and it provides seamless support for monitoring also applications running on Android devices.

Since 70's, and despite its operational complexity, Mandatory Access Control (MAC) has demonstrated its reliability to enforce integrity and confidentiality. Surprisingly, the java technology, despite its popularity, has not yet adopted this protection principle. Current security features within the JVM (JAAS and bytecode verifier) can be bypassed, as demonstrated by summer 2012 attacks. Thus, a MAC model for java and a cross platform reference monitor are required for the java virtual machine. Security Enhanced java (SEjava) enables to control dynamically the information flows between all the java objects requiring neither bytecode nor source code instrumentations. The main idea is to consider java types as security contexts, and method calls / field accesses as permissions. SEjava allows fine-grain MAC rules between the java objects. Thus, SEjava controls all the information flows within the JVM. Our implementation is faster than concurrent approaches while allowing both finer and more advanced controls. A use case shows the efficiency to protect against Common Vulnerability and Exposures in an efficient manner.
