Platform independent dynamic java virtual machine analysis: the java Grande Forum benchmark suite

In this paper we present a platform independent analysis of the dynamic profiles of java programs when executing on the java virtual machine. The java programs selected are taken from the java Grande Forum benchmark suite and five different java-to-bytecode compilers are analysed. The results presented describe the dynamic instruction usage frequencies. as well as the sizes of the local variable, parameter and operand stacks during execution on the JVM. These results, presenting a picture of the actual (rather than presumed) behaviour of the JVM, have implications both for the coverage aspects of the java Grande benchmark suites, for the performance of the java-to-bytecode compilers and for the design of the JVM. On the design of the local variable cache in a hardware translation-based java virtual machine

Hardware bytecode translation is a technique to improve the performance of the java virtual machine (JVM), especially on the portable devices for which dynamic compilation is infeasible. However, since the translation is done on a single bytecode basis, it is likely to generate frequent memory accesses for local variables which can be a performance bottleneck. In this paper, we propose to add a small register file to the datapath of the hardware-translation based JVM and use it as a local variable cache. We evaluate the effectiveness of the local variable cache against the size of the local variable cache which determines the chip area overhead and the operating speed. We also discuss the mechanisms for the efficient parameter passing and the on-the-fly profiling. With two types of exceptions, a 16-entry local variable cache achieved hit ratios of 60 to 98 %. The first type of exceptions is represented by the FFT, which accesses more than 16 local variables. In this case, on-the-fly profiling was effective. The hit ratio of 16-entry cache for the FFT was increased from 44 to 83 %. The second type of exception is represented by the SAXON XSLT processor for which cold misses were significant. The proposed parameter passing mechanism turned 6.4 to 13.3 % of total accesses from miss to hit to the local variable cache.

J - is a set of tools designed for system developers who need to generate native code for the java virtual machine. This set of tools is composed by a disassembler, an assembler, an integrated environment and a class library that hides the binary format used by JVM to represent its classes. This package includes comprehensive documentation, which allows its use without any previous knowledge on JVM. The project is not platform specific, and it is currently running on Windows95, WindowsNT and Xwindow.

Visualization is applied in monitoring java virtual machine (JVM) running process, and provides a java programmer with intuitive observation to the data and their relations. To achieve this, we propose a JVM framework with feature of visualization, namely Venus. Our work includes two modeling tasks: the type system visual area modeling and runtime system visual area modeling. In type system visual area modeling, we model it by building the GUI component of type system, refining the load, link, preparation and initialization processes. In runtime system visual area modeling, we model it by building the GUI component of runtime system and refining the processes of three different kinds of instruction execution.

To date, systems offering multitasking for the java™ programming language either use one process or one class loader for each application. Both approaches are unsatisfactory. Using operating system processes is expensive, scales poorly and does not fully exploit the protection features inherent in a safe language. Class loaders replicate application code, obscure the type system, and non-uniformly treat 'trusted' and 'untrusted' classes, which leads to subtle, but nevertheless, potentially harmful forms of undesirable inter-application *** this paper we propose a novel, simple yet powerful solution. The new model improves on existing designs in terms of resource utilization while offering strong isolation among applications. The approach is applicable both on high-end servers and on small devices. The main idea is to maintain only one copy of every class, regardless of how many applications use it. Classes are transparently and automatically modified, so that each application has a separate copy of its static fields. Two prototypes are described and selected performance data is analyzed. Various aspects of the proposed architectural changes to the java virtual machine are discussed.

The java virtual machine (or JVM) is central to the system's aim of providing a secure program execution environment that operates identically on a wide variety of computing platforms. To be most effective in this role, the JVM needs a rigorous, complete description, to specify precisely the behavior required of implementations. In response, a number of researchers have produced formal accounts of the JVM that seek to define it in an unambiguous and comprehensible manner. Unfortunately, the size and complexity of the JVM means that many of these formal accounts must either restrict their scope substantially, or risk becoming unwieldy and intractable. This paper suggests an alternative approach to the specification of the JVM that seeks to ameliorate such problems by composing together a small set of "microinstructions" to produce the full bytecode set. These microinstructions are encapsulated as functions in the polymorphic functional programming language Haskell, using the familiar mechanisms of Hindley-Milner type inference to characterize the JVM's rather thorny verifier. In this way, its is hoped that a foundation will be laid for formal descriptions of the java virtual machine that need not trade tractability for completeness.

The Squawk virtual machine is a small java™ virtual machine (VM) written mostly in java that runs without an operating system on a wireless sensor platform. Squawk translates standard class file into an internal pre-linked, position independent format that is compact and allows for efficient execution of bytecodes that have been placed into a read-only memory. In addition, Squawk implements an application isolation mechanism whereby applications are represented as object and are therefore treated as first class objects (i.e., they can be reified). Application isolation also enables Squawk to run multiple applications at once with all immutable state being shared between the applications. Mutable state is not shared. The combination of these features reduce the memory footprint of the VM, making it ideal for deployment on small *** provides a wireless API that allows developers to write applications for wireless sensor networks (WSNs), this API is an extension of the generic connection framework (GCF). HVM_TP: A time predictable and portable java virtual machine for hard real-time embedded systems

We present HVMTP, a time predictable and portable java virtual machine (JVM) implementation with applications in resource-constrained, hard real-time embedded systems, which implements all levels of the safety critical java (SCJ) specification. Time predictability is achieved by a combination of time-predictable algorithms, exploiting the programming model of the SCJ profile and harnessing static knowledge of the hosted SCJ system. This paper presents HVMTP in terms of its design and capabilities and demonstrates how a complete timing model of the JVM represented as a network of timed automata can be obtained using the tool TETASARTS(JVM). The timing model readily integrates with the rest of the TETASARTS tool set for temporal verification of SCJ systems. We will also show how a complete timing scheme in terms of safe worst-case execution times and best-case execution times of the java bytecodes can be derived from the model. Furthermore, we take a first look at how to support the new java 8 language feature of Lambda expressions in a SCJ context - we look in particular at how the invokedynamic bytecode can be implemented in a time-predictable way and integrated in HVMTP. Cache plays an important role in multilevel storage system. It can greatly reduce the memory access latency. So the cache hit rate has a significant impact on the performance of the application. Many processors provide cache locking mechanism, which can lock the certain lines in cache. It enables an application to affect the cache replacement decisions under software control. This paper presents a novel method, which uses cache locking mechanism to reduce the run-time of java virtual machine (JVM). JVM often uses justin-time compiler (JIT) to improve the performance. JIT compiles the method that has been invoked certain times, and then JVM executes the compiled method when invoking this method the next time. This paper analyzes the calling situation of the compiled method in JVM, and then proposes a heuristic approach to lock the compiled method in cache for an appropriate period. It can reduce cache miss rate when JVM executes the compiled method. The algorithm has been implemented in HotSpot based on Loongson-3A. Also, it can be implemented in other run-time systems. Experiment results show that the cache locking heuristic algorithm averagely reduces the cache miss rate by 8.5%, and improves the performance by 4% on the benchmark SPECjvm2008.
