All over the world, analog TV systems are being replaced by digital schemes, which, besides having better image and sound quality, can provide user interaction via an interactivity middleware. NuGinga is a web driven solution of the Ginga-NCL standard adopted in Brazil and other countries in South America, delivered on some digital TV capable devices from Latin America since the beginning of 2018. This paper intends to give an overall architecture description of NuGinga solution, a brief resume of some other solutions, and why developers have chosen such approach.

javascript programs vary widely in functionality, complexity, and use, and analyses of these programs must accommodate such variations. Type-based analyses are typically the simplest such analyses, but due to the language's subtle idioms and many application-specific needs-such as ensuring general-purpose type correctness, security properties, or proper library usage-we have found that a single type system does not suffice for all purposes. However, these varied uses still share many reusable common elements. In this paper we present TeJaS, a framework for building type systems for javascript. TeJaS has been engineered modularly to encourage experimentation. Its initial type environment is reified, to admit easy modeling of the various execution contexts of javascript programs, and its type language and typing rules are extensible, to enable variations of the type system to be constructed easily. The paper presents the base TeJaS type system, which performs traditional type-checking for javascript. Because javascript demands complex types, we explain several design decisions to improve user ergonomics. We then describe TeJaS's modular structure, and illustrate it by reconstructing the essence of a very different type system for javascript. Systems built from TeJaS have been applied to several real-world, third-party javascript programs.

The javascript language is used to enhance the client-side display of web pages. javascript code is downloaded into browsers and executed on-the-fly by an embedded interpreter. Browsers provide sand-boxing mechanisms to prevent javascript code from compromising the security of the client's environment, but, unfortunately, a number of attacks exist that can be used to steal users' credentials (e.g., crosssite scripting attacks) and lure users into providing sensitive information to unauthorized parties (e.g., phishing attacks). We propose an approach to solve this problem that is based on monitoring javascript code execution and comparing the execution to high-level policies, to detect malicious code behavior. To achieve this goal it is necessary to provide a mechanism to audit the execution of javascript code. This is a difficult task, because of the close integration of javascript with complex browser applications, such as Mozilla. This paper presents the first existing implementation of an auditing system for javascript interpreters and discusses the pitfalls and lessons learned in developing the auditing mechanism.

To solve javascript's callback hell problem, several language mechanisms like Promise and async/await have already been introduced to javascript. Using async/await, which is the most promising one, callback hell code can be rewritten to another simple and shallow nested code with (almost) the same behavior. Unfortunately, however, it is still difficult to precisely understand the execution order of the rewritten async/await code, because the semantics of async/await is difficult. This paper first clarifies that this problem is caused by the difficulty of the async/await semantics. Then, we propose and implement a novel async/await visualizer called AwaitViz, to support for programmers to understand the execution order of async/await. Our contribution is twofold. First, we show the feasibility of implementing the visualizer AwaitViz based on source-code instrumentation, which provides precise information on the javascript's asynchronous behavior. Second, we show the difficulties and limitations of implementing AwaitViz.

The increasing complexity of javascript (JS) in modern mobile web pages has become a performance bottleneck for low-end mobile phone users, especially in developing regions. In this paper we propose SlimWeb, a novel approach that automatically derives lightweight versions of mobile web pages on-the-fly by eliminating non-essential javascript that does not impact the core page content and interactive functionality. SlimWeb consists of a javascript classification service powered by a supervised Machine Learning (ML) model that provides insights into each javascript element embedded in a web page. SlimWeb aims to improve the web browsing experience by predicting the class of each element, such that essential elements are preserved and non-essential elements are blocked by the browsers using the service. We motivate SlimWeb's core design via a preference survey where 306 users overwhelmingly preferred having faster page load times over fetching various categories of non-essential javascript. We evaluate SlimWeb across 500 popular web pages in a developing region on real cellular networks, along with a user experience study with 20 real-world users and a usage willingness survey of 588 users. Evaluation results show that SlimWeb achieves 50% reduction in page load time compared to the original pages, and more than 30% reduction compared to competing solutions, while achieving high similarity scores to the original pages measured via a qualitative evaluation study with 62 users. SlimWeb improves the overall user experience metric (defined by Google Lighthouse combining first contentful paint, time to interactive, speed index) by more than 60% compared to the original pages, while maintaining 90-100% of the visual and functional components of most pages.

Over the past few years, there is a significant shift from web to mobile devices. In addition, the success of HTML5 has negatively impacted the usage and support for Adobe Flash. This has resulted in unmaintained Flash assets and code bases. In this paper, we discuss the feasibility of a semi-automated technique to transform Flash based animations to HTML5 and javascript against re-writing the same animations from scratch. Writing animations from scratch in javascript is a time taking effort due to adherence to aesthetic details of the animation, domain knowledge and enumeration of all states. Our approach addresses these challenges by providing techniques to transform the Small Web Format (SWF) files to javascript. We validate our approach by conducting an experimental study to measure the efforts for a set of animations with respect to transformation from scratch, and transformation using our proposed approach. The results showed that our approach has the potential to significantly bridge the process of Flash to HTML5 migration.

Modern web browsers are required to execute many complex, compute-intensive applications, mostly written in javascript. With widespread adoption of heterogeneous processors, recent javascript-based data-parallel programming models, such as River Trail and WebCL, support multiple types of processing elements including CPUs and GPUs. However, significant performance gains are still left on the table since the program kernel runs on only one compute device, typically selected at kernel invocation. This paper proposes a new framework for efficient work sharing between CPU and GPU for data-parallel javascript workloads. The work sharing scheduler partitions the input data into smaller chunks and dynamically dispatches them to both CPU and GPU for concurrent execution. For four data-parallel programs, our framework improves performance by up to 65% with a geometric mean speedup of 33% over GPU-only execution.

Industry widely uses unstructured merge tools that rely on textual analysis to detect and resolve conflicts between code contributions. Semistructured merge tools go further by partially exploring the syntactic structure of code artifacts, and, as a consequence, obtaining significant merge accuracy gains for Java-like languages. To understand whether semistructured merge and the observed gains generalize to other kinds of languages, we implement two semistructured merge tools for javascript, and compare them to an unstructured tool. We find that current semistructured merge algorithms and frameworks are not directly applicable for scripting languages like javascript. By adapting the algorithms, and studying 10,345 merge scenarios from 50 javascript projects on GitHub, we find evidence that our javascript tools report fewer spurious conflicts than unstructured merge, without compromising the correctness of the merging process. The gains, however, are much smaller than the ones observed for Java-like languages, suggesting that semistructured merge advantages might be limited for languages that allow both commutative and non-commutative declarations at the same syntactic level.

Online code clones occur due to reusing code snippets in software repositories from online resources such as GitHub and Stack Overflow. Previous works have shown that snippets from Stack Overflow are reused in other open-source projects and vice versa. Analysis of online code reusing patterns could identify outdated code, understand developers' practices, and help to design new code search engines. This study analyzed javascript online code clones between Stack Overflow and GitHub repositories. We first developed a javascript code corpus to search online clones. The clone search results reported 12,579 online clones between 276,547 non-trivial syntactically validated Stack Overflow snippets and 292 GitHub repositories. We manually classified the top 10% (1257) pairs of clones in seven online clone patterns. We observed that around 70% of javascript snippets in Stack Overflow posts are copied from GitHub repositories or from other external sources. Moreover, only 30.59% of javascript Snippets in Stack Overflow accepted answers could be considered as reusable snippets.

From its modest beginnings as a tool to validate forms, javascript is now an industrial-strength language used to power online applications such as spreadsheets, IDEs, image editors and even 3D games. Since all modern web browsers support javascript, it provides a medium that is both easy to distribute for developers and easy to access for users. This paper provides empirical data to answer the question: Is javascript fast enough for numerical computations? By measuring and comparing the runtime performance of benchmarks representative of a wide variety of scientific applications, we show that sequential javascript is within a factor of 2 of native code. Parallel code usingWebCL shows speed improvements of up to 2.28 over javascript for the majority of the benchmarks.
