Modern web applications commonly include third-party scripts from external hosts. While enabling code reuse and enhancing the functionalities, the reliability of client-side javascript code can be impaired by the inclusion of other scripts. Since all scripts run in the same execution environment in the browser, executing them all together may cause unexpected effects. For example, global variables with the same name might be defined by multiple scripts, causing the actual value to be unpredictable. In this paper, we design a lightweight browser-based framework, JSISOLATE, that provides an isolated and reliable javascript execution environment. JSISOLATE injects scripts into different isolated environments based on their dependency relationship. In this way, it executes scripts with independent functionalities in different contexts, effectively preventing them from interfering with each other. We further evaluated the compatibility and performance overhead of JSISOLATE on Alexa top 1K websites, and showed that it can efficiently isolate scripts while preserving the functionalities.

To characterize the building blocks of a legacy software system (e.g., structure, dependencies), programmers usually spend a long time navigating its source code. Yet, modern integrated development environments (IDEs) do not provide appropriate means to efficiently achieve complex software comprehension tasks. To deal with this unfulfilled need, we present Hunter, a tool for the visualization of javascript applications. Hunter visualizes source code through a set of coordinated views that include a node-link diagram that depicts the dependencies among the components of a system, and a treemap that helps programmers to orientate when navigating its structure. In this paper, we report on a controlled experiment that evaluates Hunter. We asked 16 participants to solve a set of software comprehension tasks, and assessed their effectiveness in terms of (i) user performance (i.e., completion time, accuracy, and attention), and (ii) user experience (i.e., emotions, usability). We found that when using Hunter programmers required significantly less time to complete various software comprehension tasks and achieved a significantly higher accuracy. We also found that the node-link diagram panel of Hunter gets most of the attention of programmers, whereas the source code panel does so in Visual Studio Code. Moreover, programmers considered that Hunter exhibits a good user experience.

Determining server HTTP endpoints - essentially, revealing server's attack surface - is a crucial step of every black-box web security scanner. An indispensable method of doing that is inferring server endpoints from client side, discovering what HTTP requests can be sent from client to server. This is easy for requests triggered by HTML markup elements, such as links and forms, but is difficult for requests sent by javascript. Existing approaches to determining requests sent from javascript are based on a technique known as dynamic crawling automated interaction with web page elements using a headless browser. Dynamic crawling fails when the code that sends a request is impossible or very hard to trigger with interface interaction. We propose a different approach for finding HTTP requests sent by JS code, which uses static code analysis. While analyzing javascript statically is known to be hard and applying existing analyzers to real-world web pages usually does not work, we propose a new lightweight analysis algorithm that can work on pages of real websites, and can discover server endpoints that dynamic crawlers cannot. Evaluation results show that augmenting a black-box scanner with the proposed static analysis may significantly improve server-side endpoint coverage.

Object serialization is important to a variety of applications, including session migration and distributed computing. A general javascript object serializer must support function serialization as functions are first-class objects. However, javascript offers no built-in function serialization and limits custom serializers by exposing no meta operator to query a function's captured variables. Code instrumentation can expose captured variables but state-of-the-art instrumentation techniques introduce high overheads, vary in supported syntax and/or use complex (de)serialization algorithms. We introduce FlashFreeze, an instrumentation technique based on capture lists. FlashFreeze achieves a tiny run time overhead: an Octane score reduction of 3% compared to 76% for the state-of-the-art ThingsMigrate tool and 1% for the work-in-progress FSM tool. FlashFreeze supports all self-contained ECMAScript 5 programs except for specific uses of eval, with, and source code inspection. FlashFreeze's construction gives rise to simple (de)serialization algorithms.

To quickly create interactive web pages, developers heavily rely on (large) general-purpose javascript libraries. This practice bloats web pages with complex unused functions dead code which are unnecessarily downloaded and processed by the browser. The identification and the elimination of these functions is an open problem, which this paper tackles with Muzeel, a black-box approach requiring neither knowledge of the code nor execution traces. While the state-of-the-art solutions stop analyzing javascript when the page loads, the core design principle of Muzeel is to address the challenge of dynamically analyzing javascript after the page is loaded, by emulating all possible user interactions with the page, such that the used functions (executed when interactivity events fire) are accurately identified, whereas unused functions are filtered out and eliminated. We run Muzeel against 15,000 popular web pages and show that half of the 300,000 javascript files used in these pages have at least 70% of unused functions, accounting for 55% of the files' sizes. To assess the impact of dead code elimination on Mobile Web performance, we serve 200 Muzeel-ed pages to several Android phones and browsers, under variable network conditions. Our evaluation shows that Muzeel can speed up page loads by 25-30% thanks to a combination of lower CPU and bandwidth usage. Most importantly, we show that such savings are achieved while maintaining the pages' visual appearance and interactive functionality.

There is a common approach to detecting drive-by downloads using a classifier based on the static and dynamic features of malicious websites collected using a honeyclient. However, attackers detect the honeyclient and evade analysis using sophisticated javascript code. The evasive code indirectly identifies clients by abusing the differences among javascript implementations. Attackers deliver malware only to targeted clients on the basis of the evasion results while avoiding honeyclient analysis. Therefore, we are faced with a problem in that honeyclients cannot extract features from malicious websites and the subsequent classifier does not work. Nevertheless, we can observe the evasion nature, i.e., the results in accessing malicious websites by using targeted clients are different from those by using honeyclients. In this paper, we propose a method of extracting evasive code by leveraging the above differences to investigate current evasion techniques and to use them for analyzing malicious websites. Our method analyzes HTTP transactions of the same website obtained using two types of clients, a real browser as a targeted client and a browser emulator as a honeyclient. As a result of evaluating our method with 8,467 javascript samples executed in 20,272 malicious websites, we discovered unknown evasion techniques that abuse the differences among javascript implementations. These findings will contribute to improving the analysis capabilities of conventional honeyclients.

Flaky tests (tests with non-deterministic outcomes) can be problematic for testing efficiency and software reliability. Flaky tests in test suites can also significantly delay software releases. There have been several studies that attempt to quantify the impact of test flakiness in different programming languages (e.g., Java and Python) and application domains (e.g., mobile and GUI-based). In this paper, we conduct an empirical study of the state of flaky tests in javascript. We investigate two aspects of flaky tests in javascript projects: the main causes of flaky tests in these projects and common fixing strategies. By analysing 452 commits from large, top-scoring javascript projects from GitHub, we found that flakiness caused by concurrency-related issues (e.g., async wait, race conditions or deadlocks) is the most dominant reason for test flakiness. The other top causes of flaky tests are operating system-specific (e.g., features that work on specific OS or OS versions) and network stability (e.g., internet availability or bad socket management). In terms of how flaky tests are dealt with, the majority of those flaky tests (>80%) are fixed to eliminate flaky behaviour and developers sometimes skip, quarantine or remove flaky tests.

In recent years, we have seen an increased interest in studying the software supply chain of user-facing applications to uncover problematic third-party dependencies. Prior work shows that web applications often rely on outdated or vulnerable third-party code. Moreover, real-world supply chain attacks show that dependencies can also be used to deliver malicious code, e.g., for carrying cryptomining operations. Nonetheless, existing measurement studies in this domain neglect an important software engineering practice: developers often merge together third-party code into a single file called bundle, which they then deliver from their own servers, making it appear as first-party code. Bundlers like Webpack or Rollup are popular open-source projects with tens of thousand of GitHub stars, suggesting that this technology is widely-used by developers. Ignoring bundling may result in underestimating the complexity of modern software supply chains. In this work, we aim to address these methodological shortcomings of prior work. To this end, we propose a novel methodology for automatically detecting bundles, and partially reverse engineer them. Using this methodology, we conduct the first large-scale empirical study of bundled code on the web and examine its security implications. We provide evidence about the high prevalence of bundles, which are contained in 40% of all websites, and the average website includes more than one bundle. Following our methodology, we reidentify 1 051 vulnerabilities originating from 33 vulnerable npm packages, included in bundled code. Among the vulnerabilities, we find 17 critical and 59 high severity ones, which might enable malicious actors to execute attacks such as arbitrary code execution. Analyzing the low-rated libraries included in bundles, we discover 10 security holding packages, which suggest that supply-chain attacks affecting bundles are not only possible, but they are already happening.

The expansion of online services and the increasing demand for a good experience on the Web have promoted the emergence of different rendering frameworks based on javascript that assist the agile development and optimize the application's performance. This paper presents a methodology to evaluate web rendering frameworks based on virtual and incremental DOM paradigms: Angular, React, and Vue. We conducted a study case based on a generic toy application and analyzed the build size, time to interact, and the DOM manipulation time aspects. Our results show that Vue is 758% faster than React and 595% compared with Angular in manipulation time. Angular occupies 54% more bundle space than Vue and 45% than React. React shows the best time of interactive (300ms), 33% faster than Vue and 50% than Angular. The experiments can support future Web project methodology decisions.
