Modern web applications are distributed across a browser-based client and a cloud-based server. Distribution provides access to remote resources, accessed over the web and shared by clients. Much of the complexity of inspecting and evolving web applications lies in their distributed nature. Also, the majority of mature program analysis and transformation tools works only with centralized software. Inspired by business process re-engineering, in which remote operations can be insourced back in house to restructure and outsource anew, we bring an analogous approach to the re-engineering of web applications. Our target domain are full-stack javascript applications that implement both the client and server code in this language. Our approach is enabled by Client Insourcing, a novel automatic refactoring that creates a semantically equivalent centralized version of a distributed application. This centralized version is then inspected, modified, and redistributed to meet new requirements. After describing the design and implementation of Client Insourcing, we demonstrate its utility and value in addressing changes in security, reliability, and performance requirements. By reducing the complexity of the non-trivial program inspection and evolution tasks performed to meet these requirements, our approach can become a helpful aid in the re-engineering of web applications in this domain.

Based on a systematic review of empirical studies about software components selection and usability techniques applied to a functional prototype, this article maps the functional and non-functional requirements of a components sharing network that aims to accelerate javascript software development. Results point out that integrating the development environment to a component search mechanism with automated filters, ordered by quality criteria, and allow code snippets rank and improvements submission on a version control system are the path to accelerate the development and motivate IT students and professionals to participate in this network.

Recently, researches have proposed application (app) migration approaches for javascript programs to enable a non-breaking user experience across different devices. To migrate a stateful javascript app's runtime, past studies have proposed snapshot-based techniques in which the app's runtime state is profiled and serialized into a text form that can be restored back later. A common limitation of existing literature, however, is that they are based on old javascript specifications. Since major updates introduced by ECMASCript2015 (a.k.a. ES6), javascript supports various features that cannot be migrated correctly with existing methods. Some of these features are in fact heavily used in today's real-world apps and thus greatly reduces the scope of previous works. In this paper, we analyze ES6 features such as block scopes, modules, and class syntax that were previously uncovered in app migration. We present an algorithm that enables migration of apps implemented with these new features. Based on the standards adopted in modern javascript engines, our approach serializes a running program into a scope tree and reorganizes it for snapshot code generation. We implement our idea on the open source V8 engine and experiment with complex benchmark programs of modern javascript. Results show that our approach correctly migrates 5 target programs between mobile devices. Our framework could migrate the most complex app of source code size 213KB in less than 200 ms in a X86 laptop and 800 ms in an embedded ARM board.

Data persistence refers to an characteristic that data needs to outlive its creator. In recent years, NVM (Non-volatile Memory), a new type of computer memory supporting memory like byte-addressable access and disk-like persistence, became a promising technique for facilitating data persistence in memory and its management. So far NVM has been supported in many programming languages such as C, C++, and Java. Meanwhile, it has not yet been well supported in javascript, a popular scripting language for software development. This paper presents JSNVM, an extension to javascript's runtime and execution engine, to support data persistence in javascript using NVM. JSNVM consists of (1) a javascript persistent object pool that serves as a persistent heap in which persistent objects are created and managed. This pool is also enhanced for guaranteeing data safety and consistency;and (2) a set of javascript persistent APIs that provide programmers with a support in creating, managing, and accessing persistent data in an easy-to-use and safe manner. We have implemented JSNVM and evaluated it against two database-supported data persistence styles (i.e., MongoDB's object store and indexedDB's binary store) on micro-benchmarks and real-world applications. The evaluation results show that compared with MongoDB's object store, JSNVM can achieve a 1.6x speedup;when applied to access binary data, JSNVM can achieve a 24.6x speedup over indexedDB's binary store, denoting that JSNVM can enhance performance of javascript applications in practice. JSNVM is planned to be publicly available by the end of 2018.

javascript has become a popular programming language.(1) It is widely used in both client-side and server-side programming in web applications. The robustness and performance of javascript programs become vital. Unfortunately, real-world javascript programs often suffer from various issues. In this work, we present nine issue patterns derived from open-source projects and propose a general static analysis framework, JSOptimizer, to help detect such patterns of issues and optimize the code accordingly. Comparing to existing work, JSOptimizer is not only highly extensible but also performs code optimizations automatically. We applied JSOptimizer to seven real open-source javascript projects and five bugs detected by it have been confirmed by developers. Besides, we conducted a case study based on a popular project and found that addressing the issues detected by our framework can speed up the original project by over 300%. This shows the usefulness of JSOptimizer.

javascript, the most popular language on the Web, is rapidly moving to the server-side, becoming even more pervasive. Still, javascript lacks support for shared memory parallelism, making it challenging for developers to exploit multicores present in both servers and clients. In this paper we present TigerQuoll, a novel API and runtime for parallel programming in javascript. TigerQuoll features an event-based API and a parallel runtime allowing applications to exploit a mutable shared memory space. The programming model of TigerQuoll features automatic consistency and concurrency management, such that developers do not have to deal with shared-data synchronization. TigerQuoll supports an innovative transaction model that allows for eventual consistency to speed up high-contention workloads. Experiments show that TigerQuoll applications scale well, allowing one to implement common parallelism patterns in javascript.

javascript performance is paramount to a user's browsing experience. Browser vendors have gone to great lengths to improve javascript's steady-state performance. This has led to sophisticated web applications. However, as users increasingly expect instantaneous page load times, another important goal for javascript engines is to attain minimal startup times. In this paper, we reduce the startup time of javascript programs by enhancing the reuse of compilation and optimization information across different executions. Specifically, we propose a new scheme to increase the startup performance of Inline Caching (IC), a key optimization for dynamic type systems. The idea is to represent a substantial portion of the IC information in an execution in a context-independent way, and reuse it in subsequent executions. We call our enhanced IC design Reusable Inline Caching (RIC). We integrate RIC into the state-of-the-art Google V8 javascript engine and measure its impact on the initialization time of popular javascript libraries. By recycling IC information collected from a previous execution, RIC reduces the average initialization time per library by 17%.

In the last two decades that there has been an explosion in the use of web applications. Given the ever expanding number of web and mobile apps, extensive work has been done in developing and using efficient core technologies to support the performance goals of the apps. In particular, front-end developer languages such as javascript are highly popular. In this paper, we perform a detailed study of the recently introduced Python-based web development framework PyScript and evaluate the performance of PyScript in comparison with javascript using standard benchmarks. The research contributions of this work are in the benchmarking of code in three different categories (i) DOM manipulation, (ii) Operations involving the network layer, and (iii)cpu-intensive computations. The benchmarks come from one of the standards and carefully implemented to perform a comparative evaluation. Results show that native javascript code runs faster on all DOM and networking sets of benchmarks by a factor of 1.5 to 5 when compared with PyScript, with the exception of two of the networking benchmarks. It is in the computationally intensive benchmarks that javascript trumps PyScript by a factor of 25 to 35 depending the algorithm. We offer architectural insights into performance issues and conclude with directions on further research.

In modern computer systems, multicore processors are prevalent, even on mobile devices. Since javascript WebWorkers provide execution parallelism in a web browser, they can help utilize multicore CPUs more effectively. However, WebWorker limitations include a lack of access to web browser's native XML processing capabilities and related Document Object Model (DOM). We present a javascript DOM and XML processing implementation that adds missing APIs to WebWorkers. This way, it is possible to use javascript code that relies on native APIs within WebWorkers. We show and evaluate the seamless integration of an external XMPP library to enable parallel network data and user input processing in a web based real-time remote collaboration system. Evaluation shows that our XML processing solution has the same linear execution time complexity as its native API counterparts. The proposed javascript solution is a general approach to enable parallel XML data processing within web browser-based applications. By implementing standards compliant DOM interfaces, our implementation is useful for existing libraries and applications to leverage the processing power of multicore systems.

javascript (JS) is one of the most popular programming languages, and widely used for web apps, mobile apps, desktop clients, and even backend development. Due to its dynamic and flexible nature, however, JS applications often have a reputation for poor software quality. While the type-safe superset TypeScript (TS) offers features to address these prejudices, there is currently insufficient empirical evidence to broadly support the claim that TS applications exhibit better software quality than JS applications. We therefore conducted a repository mining study based on 604 GitHub projects (299 for JS, 305 for TS) with over 16M LoC. Using SonarQube and the GitHub API, we collected and analyzed four facets of software quality: a) code quality (# of code smells per LoC), b) code understandability (cognitive complexity per LoC), c) bug proneness (bug fix commit ratio), and d) bug resolution time (mean time a bug issue is open). For TS, we also collected how frequently the type-safety ignoring any type was used per project via ESLint. The analysis indicates that TS applications exhibit significantly better code quality and understandability than JS applications. Contrary to expectations, however, bug proneness and bug resolution time of our TS sample were not significantly lower than for JS: the mean bug fix commit ratio of TS projects was more than 60% larger (0.126 vs. 0.206), and TS projects needed on average more than an additional day to fix bugs (31.86 vs. 33.04 days). Furthermore, reducing the usage of the any type in TS apps appears to be beneficial: its frequency was significantly correlated with all metrics except bug proneness, even though the correlations were of small strengths (Spearman's rho between 0.17 and 0.26). Our results indicate that the perceived positive influence of Type-Script for avoiding bugs in comparison to javascript may be more complicated than assumed.
