Tail Call Optimization Tailored for Native Stack Utilization in javascript Runtimes

javascript has significantly evolved, broadening its capabilities. However, the uptake of tail call optimization (TCO) remains limited, largely due to concerns about debugging difficulties and the potential increase in overall complexity. This paper highlights the compelling importance of tail calls within web applications, advocating for TCO as a means to boost performance and enhance memory efficiency. We present an innovative TCO technique that leverages the native stack within javascript engines, capitalizing on the native stack's inherent benefits over heap memory. This technique is carefully crafted to comply with diverse TCO standards, prioritizing simplicity and providing debugging features. We tackle the inherent challenges of TCO and successfully deploy our method in a lightweight javascript engine. Our approach is rigorously evaluated, proving its effectiveness and practicality. Notably, our implementation facilitates considerable memory savings for web applications, comparable to the maximum Resident Set Size (RSS), and achieves an average performance improvement of approximately 19.8% for algorithms that are heavily recursive. This research not only demonstrates the versatility and efficiency of our TCO strategy but also makes a significant contribution to the wider adoption and comprehension of TCO, thereby improving javascript engines' performance and memory management efficiency.

Using javascript as a description language can increase the productivity of application programs on embedded systems. Since javascript is a dynamic language, it is important for a javascript virtual machine (VM) to efficiently identify the types of first-class values and perform type-based dispatches. For embedded systems, the type-based dispatching code is desired to be compact as well as fast. Although operators of javascript are heavily overloaded and capable of accepting a variety of datatypes as operands, all the datatypes are not always necessarily used in a specific program. If some datatypes are never used in this program, a VM for a subset of javascript with operators that support limited datatypes suffices. Such a VM is expected to be compact and efficient. In addition, internal representation of datatype of each value may affect performance of type-based dispatching. This paper presents a novel framework that can generate a VM for a subset of javascript on the basis of operand specifications and datatype specifications given by the programmer. The operand specifications describe possible operand datatypes for every instruction and the datatype specifications describe adequate internal representations of necessary datatypes for a target program. The generated VM is specialized in the sense that it has efficient and minimum type-based dispatching code for all instructions.

Making javascript Render Decisions to Optimize Security-Oriented Crawler Process

The widespread use of web applications requires important changes in cybersecurity to protect online services and data. In the process of identifying security vulnerabilities in web applications, a systematic approach is employed to detect and mitigate cybersecurity risks. This approach utilizes web crawlers to identify attack vectors. Traditional web crawling methods are resource-intensive and often need to be more efficient in handling dynamic javascript-rich content. Addressing this crucial gap, our study introduces an innovative approach to predict the necessity of javascript rendering, thereby enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of security-oriented web crawlers. This approach seeks to reduce computational requirements and quicken the security evaluation process through the use of machine learning algorithms. By utilizing a dataset containing the source code from the main pages of 17,160 websites, our experimental results demonstrate a 20% reduction in execution time compared to full javascript rendering, indicating an improvement in resource usage without any significant reduction in coverage. Our methodology significantly improves the efficiency of security-focused web crawlers and helps security scanners to detect security risks of web applications with fewer resources.

Growing a language: An empirical study on how (and why) developers use some recently-introduced and/or recently-evolving javascript features

We describe an empirical study to understand how different language features in javascript are used by developers, with the goal of using this information to assist future extensions of javascript. We inspected more than one million unique scripts (over 80 MLOC) from various sources: javascript programs in the wild collected by a spider, (supposedly) better javascript programs collected from the top 100 URLs from the Alexa list, javascript programs with new language features used in Firefox Add-ons, widely used javascript libraries, and *** applications. Our corpus is larger and more diversified than those in prior studies. We also performed two explanatory studies to understand the reasons behind some of the language feature choices. One study was conducted on 107 javascript developers;the other was conducted on 45 developers of *** applications. Our study shows that there is a widespread confusion about newly introduced javascript features, a continuing misuse of existing problematic features, and a surprising lack of adoption of object-oriented features. It also hints at why developers choose to use language features this way. This information is valuable to the language designers and the stakeholders, e.g., IDE and tool builders, all of whom are responsible for growing a language. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. On the (un-)adoption of javascript front-end frameworks

javascript is characterized by a rich ecosystem of libraries and frameworks. A key element in this ecosystem are frameworks used for implementing the front-end of web-based applications, such as Vue and React. However, despite their relevance, we have few works investigating the factors that drive the adoption-and un-adoption-of front-end-based javascript frameworks. Therefore, in this article, we first report the results of a survey with 49 developers where we asked them to describe the factors they consider when selecting a front-end framework. In the second part of the work, we focus on projects that migrate from one framework to another since javascript's ecosystem is also very dynamic. Finally, we provide a quantitative characterization of the migration effort and reveal the main barriers faced by the developers during this effort. Although not completely generalizable, our central findings are as follows: (a) popularity and learnability are the key factors that motivate the choice of front-end frameworks in javascript;(b) from the 49 surveyed developers, one out of four have plans to migrate to another framework in the future;(c) the time spent performing the migration is greater than or equal to the time spent using the old framework in all studied projects. We conclude with a list of implications for practitioners, framework developers, tool builders, and researchers.

Slimming javascript applications: An approach for removing unused functions from javascript libraries

Context A common practice in javascript development is to ship and deploy an application as a large file, called bundle, which is the result of combining the application code along with the code of all the libraries the application depends on. Despite the benefits of having a single bundle per application, this approach leads to applications being shipped with significant portions of code that are actually not used, which unnecessarily inflates the javascript bundles and could slow down website loading because of the extra unused code. Although some static analysis techniques exist for removing unused code, our investigations suggest that there is still room for improvements. Objective: The goal of this paper is to address the problem of reducing the size of bundle files in javascript applications. Method: In this context, we define the notion of Unused Foreign Function (UFF) to denote a javascript function contained in dependent libraries that is not needed at runtime. Furthermore, we propose an approach based on dynamic analysis that assists developers to identify and remove UFFs from javascript bundles. Results: We report on a case-study performed over 22 javascript applications, showing evidence that our approach can produce size reductions of 26% on average (with reductions going up to 66% in some applications). Conclusion: It is concluded that removing unused foreign functions from javascript bundles helps reduce their size, and thus, it can boost the results of existing static analysis techniques.

We describe the use of Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML)I javascript code, and Perl I/O to create and validate forms in an Internet-based graphical user interface (GUI) for the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) Ocean models and Assimilation Demonstration System (NOMADS). The resulting nowcast system can be operated from any compatible browser across the Internet, for although the GUI was prepared in a Netscape browser, it used no Netscape extensions. Reusing the Optimized Code for javascript Ahead-of-Time Compilation

As web pages and web apps increasingly include heavy javascript code, javascript performance has been a critical issue. Modern javascript engines achieve a remarkable performance by employing tiered-execution architecture based on interpreter, baseline just-in-time compiler (JITC), and optimizing JITC. Unfortunately, they suffer from a substantial compilation overhead, which can take more than 50% of the whole running time. A simple idea to reduce the compilation overhead is ahead-of-time compilation (AOTC), which reuses the code generated in the previous run. In fact, existing studies that reuse the bytecode generated by the interpreter or the machine code generated by the baseline JITC have shown tangible performance benefits [12, 31, 41]. However, there has been no study to reuse the machine code generated by the optimizing JITC, which heavily uses profile-based optimizations, thus not easily reusable. We propose a novel AOTC that can reuse the optimized machine code for high-performance javascript engines. Unlike previous AOTCs, we need to resolve a few challenging issues related to reusing profile-based optimized code and relocating dynamic addresses. Our AOTC improves the performance of a commercial javascript engine by 6.36 times (max) and 1.99 times (average) for Octane benchmarks, by reducing the compilation overhead and by running the optimized code from the first invocation of functions. It also improves the loading time of six web apps by 1.28 times, on average.

javascript is a scripting language for web pages that allows website creators to run any code they want when users visit their website. Therefore, malicious javascript is the greatest threats within the cyber world. This paper proposes a novel method of detecting the javascript malware by using a high-level fuzzy Petri net (HLFPN). Firstly, the web pages are crawled to get javascript files. Secondly, the malicious features are extracted from javascript code. Finally, an HLFPN is used to determine the malicious code. The experimental results can support the effectiveness of our approach.

Automatic fault localization for client-side javascript

javascript is a scripting language that plays a prominent role in web applications today. It is dynamic, loosely typed and asynchronous and is extensively used to interact with the Document Object Model (DOM) at runtime. All these characteristics make javascript code error-prone;unfortunately, javascript fault localization remains a tedious and mainly manual task. Despite these challenges, the problem has received very limited research attention. This paper proposes an automated technique to localize javascript faults based on dynamic analysis, tracing and backward slicing of javascript code. This technique is capable of handling features of javascript code that have traditionally been difficult to analyse, including eval, anonymous functions and minified code. The approach is implemented in an open source tool called AUTOFLOX, and evaluation results indicate that it is capable of (1) automatically localizing DOM-related javascript faults with high accuracy (over 96%) and no false-positives and (2) isolating javascript faults in production websites and actual bugs from real-world web applications.
