Population Recruitment Strategies in the Age of Bots: Insights from the What Is on Your Plate Study

Background To evaluate state-wide nutrition policies, valid tools are required to gather sufficient sample sizes. Remote data collection, including web-based dietary assessments, offers convenience for participants and researchers and enables faster and more diverse recruitment. However, it presents challenges, including risk of bots compromising data integrity. objectives This study describes the technical survey design of an ongoing longitudinal study, which is evaluating a state-wide Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) incentive program, discusses strategies to prevent and identify bots, duplicates, fraudulent entries, and implausible data, and provides recommendations to improve future public health nutrition research. Methods From May to September 2023, SNAP participants from Rhode Island and Connecticut were recruited to complete an online food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and a demographic survey. Given the large sample and online format, our interdisciplinary team designed the technical backend to optimize participants’ convenience while ensuring data quality through an automated system that assessed FFQ responses. To prevent bots and duplicates, we created duplicate application programming interfaces (API), randomly called participants, and evaluated Completely Automated Public Turing Test to Tell Computers and Humans Apart (reCAPTCHA), geotags, and Internet Protocol (IP) addresses. Results Using a combination of text blasts and in-person recruitment, we enrolled 1367 participants, with text blasts proving the most effective strategy (∼60% of participants). Midway through recruitment, we identified 544 potential bots that completed the screener, with duplicate IP addresses and geotags from outside the recruitment area serving as strong indicators of bot activity. The paper describes the implementation of an efficient user interface for applied software in distributed computing systems. As part of this work, a software platform has been developed for the formation of problem-oriented interfaces for application software packages and components of distributed computing systems. The main purpose of the system is to simplify the input of technical settings, launch specific jobs if required and monitor all intermediate processes. Thus, it provides an intuitive user interface for working directly with an application system, and does not require knowledge of low-level operations. Using web services and modern information technology, the developed platform makes it possible to create a set of simple and convenient interfaces for researchers who use high-performance computer systems in their work. As an example, we describe the adaptation of the FHI98md code for a Grid system.

Harmonization of academic records between institutions will ease information sharing among institutions and reduce forgery of certifications and other academic qualifications. A solutions was proposed which collect relevant certificate information from Nigerian Universities' databases via web service and make it publically available across all platforms via web service as a means for verifying certificate authenticity. One of the limitations of the proposed system is the limitation imposed on the data that can be retrieved from institutions by the defines JSON template, more relevant data might be neglected, also it was assumed that all universities use relational database, with the current trend it is possible in the nearest future a good number of institutions might move to NoSQL platform. In this study we proposed an enhancement of the initially proposed system to accommodate diversity of data and databases provided by institutions by using NoSQL platform and allowing institutions modify the template for the web service they will share their data, this improves the parsing time as data will not need to be structured as relational database. Hence an enhancement of the Nigerian Universities' Certificate Verification was proposed.

Nowadays, smart farming involves the integration of advanced technologies that incorporate low-cost robots to meet the required knowledge and maintain the health of plants in farming. Technologies like precision agriculture are also used to optimize resources based on the field condition. Internet of Green Things is also one of the technologies to integrate and share the information between people and healthy farm things. Internet of Green Things gives the information like soil moisture, temperature, humidity, and nutrient level by means of respective sensors. Monitoring and information gathering in green houses with the help of robots is a tedious and expensive process. In this connection, information is shared among low-cost robots encouraging data availability of the current state of a plant with other robots. This will emphasize the monitoring of green houses in a well-organized way. In this article, a Flask-based framework through Raspberry Pi is proposed for interoperability among the low-cost ESP8266 robots. Data gathering is performed by smart robots that are accessible through Message Queuing Telemetry Transport subscribes by means of Representational State Transfer Application Programming Interface. A cloud-like database server is provided to stock up the data. The integration of robotics with Internet of Green Things gains more advantage in gathering about spatial information data that are connected with the irrigation. Visualization techniques and perspectives based on Internet of Green Things for precision agriculture in the field of farming are highlighted.

Symptom optimization through sensing local field potentials: Balancing beta and gamma in Parkinson's disease

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an important clinical therapeutic tool to control motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease (PD) for many patients whose symptoms are not well controlled by medication alone (Malek, 2019 [1]). DBS therapy involves the delivery of an electrical current through an electrode that is surgically placed in the brain, traditionally in the subthalamic nucleus (STN) or globus pallidus internus (GPi). Recent technology has allowed these devices to not only deliver an electrical current, but also measure local field potentials (LFPs). LFPs are electrical potentials, produced by the activation of neurons, that act as markers for the frequency and severity of specific motor symptoms in PD (Neumann et al., 2017 [2], Swann et al., 2016 [3]). These markers can give insight into the efficacy of a given treatment regiment, by providing data to use as clinical benchmarks for the treatment team. The utility of LFPs in the treatment of PD is illustrated in this case series of three patients with complex motor fluctuations such as dyskinesias, Levodopa wearing-off and muscle rigidity. Here we demonstrate how we used LFP sensing through Timeline, Streaming and Event Capture to gain insight to the patients’ symptoms and offer data driven therapy optimization. The first case is a 72-year-old y/o female patient with PD, who presented with severe dyskinesias and motor fluctuations. By monitoring real-time LFPs, the treatment team was able to identify significant dyskinesias and optimize medication and stimulation frequency, which led to more personalized and efficacious treatment. The second case is a 66 y/o male patient with PD, hoping to achieve more on time without troublesome dyskinesias. Using chronic LFP data the treatment team was able to adjust therapy amplitude and pulse width to better manage the patient’s symptoms. objectives:The aim of this study was to investigate and develop a data storage and exchange format for the process of automatic systematic reviews(ASR)of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM).Methods:A lightweight and commonly used data format,namely,javascript object notation(JSON),was introduced in this *** designed a fully described data structure to collect TCM clinical trial information based on the JSON ***:A smart and powerful data format,JSON-ASR,was ***-ASR uses a plain-text data format in the form of key/value pairs and consists of six sections and more than 80 preset ***-ASR adopts extensible structured arrays to support the situations of multi-groups and ***:JSON-ASR has the characteristics of light weight,flexibility,and good scalability,which is suitable for the complex data of clinical evidence.
