We propose a low complexity analog joint source channel coding Multiple Description (MD) scheme for transmitting the symbols of a Gaussian source across a pair of independent AWGN channels. The outputs of these channels have each a separated receiver, whereas a third receiver has both outputs available. At the transmitter side, a pair of bandwidth-reduction analog mappings are used for joint source-channel coding. The presented scheme has the inherent advantage over digital MD schemes based on separation, that coding and decoding can be performed by using a single-letter (or symbol), a strategy that is very suitable for applications where latency originated by the digital compression and the error correcting coding can not be tolerated. Our scheme achieves a performance that is competitive as compared to the optimal region while having a very low complexity and delay.

Deep Learning-Based Semantic Communication System for Wireless Image Transmission

As semantic communication can efficiently extract semantic information and significantly reduce the amount of data transmission, an increasing number of studies are exploring deep learning-based semantic communication methods. This paper proposes a convolutional neural network (ConvNet)-based semantic communication system for wireless image transmission called ConvSC, which utilizes deep learning techniques for semantic information extraction and reconstruction. To address the adaptation of semantic communication systems to different channel states, a semantic adaptive module is proposed, which adjusts the weights of different parts of the semantic information based on channel state information. The model was evaluated under additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel, Rayleigh fading channel, and underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) channel. Simulation results demonstrate that, compared to the baseline model, our proposed ConvSC achieves superior performance across multiple metrics in various channel environments. © 2012 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose a novel semantic-aided image communication framework for supporting the compatibility with practical separation-based coding architectures. Particularly, the deep learning (DL)-based joint source-channel coding (JSCC) is integrated into the classical separate source-channel coding (SSCC) to transmit the images via the combination of semantic stream and image stream from DL networks and SSCC respectively, which we name as parallel-stream transmission. The positive coding gain stems from the sophisticated design of the JSCC encoder, which leverages the residual information neglected by the SSCC to enhance the learnable image features. Furthermore, a conditional rate adaptation mechanism is introduced to adjust the transmission rate of semantic stream according to residual, rendering the framework more flexible and efficient to bandwidth allocation. We also design a dynamic stream aggregation strategy at the receiver, which provides the composite framework with more robustness to signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) fluctuations in wireless systems compared to a single conventional codec. Finally, the proposed framework is verified to surpass the performance of both traditional and DL-based competitors in a large range of scenarios and meanwhile, maintains lightweight in terms of the transmission and computational complexity of semantic stream, which exhibits the potential to be applied in real systems. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Hybrid Digital-Analog coding with Bandwidth Compression for Gaussian source-channel Pairs

Three hybrid digital-analog (HDA) systems, denoted by HDA-I, HDA* and HDA-II, for the coding of a memoryless discrete-time Gaussian source over a discrete-time additive memoryless Gaussian channel under bandwidth compression are studied. The systems employ simple linear coding in their analog component and superimpose their analog and digital signals before channel transmission. Information-theoretic upper bounds on the asymptotically optimal mean squared error distortion of the systems are obtained under both matched and mismatched channel conditions. Allocation schemes for distributing the channel input power between the analog and the digital signals are also examined. It is shown that systems HDA* and HDA-II can asymptotically achieve the optimal Shannon-limit performance under matched channel conditions. Low-complexity and low-delay versions of systems HDA-I and HDA-II are next designed and implemented without the use of error correcting codes. The parameters of these HDA systems, which employ vector quantization in conjunction with binary phase-shift keying modulation in their digital part, are optimized via an iterative algorithm similar to the design algorithm for channel-optimized vector quantizers. Both systems have low complexity and low delay, and guarantee graceful performance improvements for high CSNRs. For memoryless Gaussian sources the designed HDA-II system is shown to be superior to the HIDA-I designed system. When applied to a Gauss-Markov source under Karhunen-Loeve processing, the HDA-I system is shown to provide considerably better performance.

Finite-State source-channel coding for Individual source Sequences With source Side Information at the Decoder

We study the following semi-deterministic setting of the joint source-channel coding problem: a deterministic source sequence (a.k.a. individual sequence) is transmitted via a memoryless channel, using delay-limited encoder and decoder, which are both implementable by periodically-varying finite-state machines, and the decoder is granted with access to side information, which is a noisy version of the source sequence. We first derive a lower bound on the achievable expected distortion in terms of the empirical statistics of the source sequence, the number of states of the encoder, the number of states of the decoder, their period, and the overall delay. The bound is shown to be asymptotically achievable by universal block codes in the limit of long blocks. We also derive a lower bound to the best achievable excess-distortion probability and discuss situations where it is achievable. Here, of course, source coding and channel coding cannot be completely separated without loss of optimality. Finally, we outline a few extensions of the model considered, such as: (i) incorporating a common reconstruction constraint, (ii) availability of side information at both ends, and (iii) extension to the Shannon channel with causal state information at the encoder. This work both extends and improves on earlier work of the same flavor (Ziv 1980, Merhav 2014), which focused only on the expected distortion, without side information at either end, and without the above mentioned additional ingredients.

Semantic coding for Text Transmission: An Iterative Design

We consider the wireless text transmission using joint source-channel coding (JSCC). Classical source coding only considers the syntactic information based on probabilistic models, ignoring the meaning of source messages. Neural network based joint source and channel coders handle the source semantic information more efficiently. However, existing semantic transmission using end-to-end neural networks do not generalize well under varying channel conditions. To tackle this, we propose a semi-neural framework with an iterative architecture, named iterative semantic JSCC (IS-JSCC). Specifically, at each iteration, the remaining semantics is extracted from the intermediate decoded text and is then used as a priori information for the channel decoder in the next iteration. Instead of reconstructing text explicitly, we synthesize the semantics of candidate words in the embedding space, weighted by their posterior probability. This soft semantic synthesis alleviates the error propagation and reduces the complexity of iterative decoding as well. Results show that compared to full-neural designs, the proposed framework can improve the quality of text reconstruction by joint iterative decoding and exhibit better robustness over wireless channels.

There have been increasing concerns about the security issues of wireless transmission of multimedia in recent years. Wireless networks, by their natures, are more vulnerable to external intrusions than wired ones. Therefore, many applications demand authenticating the integrity of multimedia content delivered wirelessly. In this work, we propose a framework for jointly authenticating and coding multimedia to be transmitted over heterogeneous wireless networks. We firstly provide a novel graph-based authentication scheme which can not only construct the authentication graph flexibly but also trade-off well among some practical requirements such as overhead, robustness and delay. And then, a rate-distortion optimized joint source-channel coding (JSCC) approach for error-resilient scalable encoded video is presented, in which the video is encoded into multiple independent streams and each stream is assigned forward error correction (FEC) codes to avoid error propagation. Furthermore, we consider integrating authentication with the specific JSCC scheme to achieve a satisfactory authentication results and end-to-end reconstruction quality by optimally applying the appropriate authentication and coding rate. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed authentication-coding scheme for multimedia over wireless networks.

On the distortion SNR exponent of hybrid digital-analog space-time coding

We consider the transmission of a real independent and identically distributed(i.i.d.) "analog" source over a quasi-static M-input N-output multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) block-fading channel. The relevant performance criterion is end-to-end average quadratic distortion D versus channel signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), for given spectral efficiency eta, defined as the ratio of the source bandwidth over the channel bandwidth. In the limit of high SNR, we define the distortion SNR exponent a*(eta) as the largest a such that D = snr(-alpha), over all possible source-channel coding schemes of spectral efficiency eta. We find a simple upper bound on a*(eta), an achievable lower bound a(sep) (eta) achievable by separated (tandem) source-channel coding, and a tighter lower bound a(hybrid)(eta)achievablebynew hybrid digital analog space-time coding schemes. As a corollary, we have that a* (eta) is completely determined for the scalar case M = N = 1 and for the "bandwidth compression" case eta >= 2 min {M, N}. Explicit and simple construction of hybrid space-time codes achieving a(hybrid)(eta) are also given.

joint source coding and packet classification for real-time video transmission over differentiated services networks

Differentiated Services (DiffServ) is one of the leading architectures for providing quality of service in the Internet. We propose a scheme for real-time video transmission over a DiffServ network that jointly considers video source coding, packet classification, and error concealment within a framework of cost-distortion optimization. The selections of encoding parameters and packet classification are both used to manage end-to-end delay variations and packet losses within the network. We present two dual formulations of the proposed scheme: the minimum distortion problem, in which the objective is to minimize the end-to-end distortion subject to cost and delay constraints, and the minimum cost problem, which minimizes the total cost subject to end-to-end distortion and delay constraints. A solution to these problems using Lagrangian relaxation and dynamic programming is given. Simulation results demonstrate the advantage of jointly adapting the source coding and packet classification in DiffServ networks.

A sequence-based approximate MMSE decoder for source coding over noisy channels using discrete hidden Markov models

In previous work on source coding over noisy channels it was recognized that when the source has memory, there is typically "residual redundancy" between the discrete symbols produced by the encoder, which can be capitalized upon by the decoder to improve the overall quantizer performance. Sayood and Borkenhagen and Phamdo and Farvardin proposed "detectors" at the decoder which optimize suitable criteria in order to estimate the sequence of transmitted symbols. Phamdo and Farvardin also proposed an instantaneous approximate minimum mean-squared error (IAMMSE) decoder. These methods provide a performance advantage over conventional systems, but the maximum a posteriori (MAP) structure is suboptimal, while the IAMMSE decoder makes limited use of the redundancy. Alternatively, combining aspects of both approaches, we propose a sequence-based approximate MMSE (SAMMSE) decoder. For a Markovian sequence of encoder-produced symbols and a discrete memoryless channel, we approximate the expected distortion at the decoder under the constraint of fixed decoder complexity. For this simplified cost, the optimal decoder computes expected values based on a discrete hidden Markov model, using the well-known forward/backward (F/B) algorithm. Performance gains for this scheme are demonstrated over previous techniques in quantizing Gauss-Markov sources over a range of noisy channel conditions. Moreover, a constrained delay version is also suggested.
